He looked at her, perking a brow, and a smile tugged at his lips again once the surprise of having something confessed to him went away. "It's just fried fish and fries," he responded with a smirk. He was sure she's had fried fish and fried potatoes before. "Where is it that you're from?"It was a sudden question. One that he wouldn't have felt comfortable asking before, but now he was. He'd spent more time with her and they were more than just acquaintances. It was normal for a friend to ask something like that, right? Friends enjoyed getting to know all the little things about their friends, didn't they? Basil hated the fact that he was always second guessing himself every time he did something but he never was sure of anything anymore when it came to his actions and other people. He'd been so distanced from others that he didn't know what was normal and what wasn't. Perhaps it was okay that he was taking baby steps? Eventually, after doing things a certain way, he hoped that he would get used to doing things and would stop walking on eggshells. He portrayed a person who was confident, but he wasn't one.

Hadley made a noise before rolling her eyes and laughing. "I know what it is, I've just never had it. I've even smelled it before but my stupid step brother wouldn't give me any!" The memory made her frown, it had smelled amazing but he gobbled it up before she could snatch some.
She took a moment to contemplate his question. It was always hard to tell if people meant where she was born, where she was raised, or what her culture was. "Well, I'm from here. I was born on Nova. I moved to the states though when I was like, hm, early teens?" After starting to munch on another cookie, she covered her mouth with her hand and continued to speak.
"If you mean ,like, culture-wise my mom is from the Caribbean and my step-dad is some white dude from Canada." She giggled at her own inside joke, she always referred to him that way as a kid. Although her step-dad and mother weren't married anymore and she only found out he wasn't her biological dad when she had first moved back to the states with him, she still called him her step-dad. He also was the father to her baby half siblings so there was that.

Oops. He made himself feel a little silly to assume she'd never heard of what fish and chips were. But the way she said it, she'd seemed like it sounded like a weird idea. Basil let out a soft chuckle to muffle his embarrassment. "So that's where you're from... I never would have guessed you to be from the Carribean; that's very interesting to hear. I didn't know you had a brother, either. What's he like?" Basil asked as he started to make a pot of tea. There was a little time before dinner could be started, so why not a little bit of tea to go along with those cookies Hadley was eating and spend some time getting to know each other better? This whole conversation thing was actually pretty fun to him or perhaps he was being biased because he enjoyed the conversational partner?

"Yup, I actually go to my mom's home town a lot. And I always make sure to go to the Trinidad and Tobago festivals." She nodded fondly at the memories, and made a note to book a flight for the next one.
Her step brother was actually a douche, but she could deal with him. "Well I have a step brother and two little siblings, a brother and a sister." Her two little siblings lived with her dad and rarely visited Nova. Arguments over them between her mother and step dad were always fun. Her family was a complicated mess so she tried to state it as straight forward as possible.
"Um, he's ok. A bit older than me and as arrogant as they come." Even her harmless words couldn't hide the resentment she had towards him. "My little baby bro and sis are angels though, heaven sent I tell you!" If they ever visited she would have to make them bother Basil, just send them into the library to wreck havoc. What a lovely role model she was.
"How about yourself, point of origin, siblings, parentals?" She was curious where he actually came from and what his back story was all about. "I mean, obviously you have an accent and yada yada." Hadley had noticed it quite some time ago even if it wasn't always on her mind.

"I'm from Brighton, England."Basil reached up into the cabinets and pulled out a medium-sized tin can, the outside of it decorated in an old-fashioned floral print. He opened it up and sniffed what was inside, making sure it was still fresh. When he was sure, he closed the lid and set it aside, turning around to face away from the counter and look at Hadley who sat across the room. "Your family sounds very nice... I don't--I mean, I do. I have family, but I might as well not. I don't talk to them. I have a brother, a mum, and a dad. I haven't seen any of them in a long while. My brother is a lazy bum who sits around all the time, grows pot, and smokes it all day long. He's always high and it gets on my nerves. My mum and dad don't care about what he does, so they just pretend it doesn't happen." Basil shrugged and when the kettle started to whistle, he turned the heat down, dropping the tea leaf basket into the boiling water to let it steep. "Your family sounds very lively and that's really nice. I'd keep in touch with mine, but I don't really see the need. They don't keep in touch with me, so why should I put forth the effort?" Basil asked, though the question was rhetorical.

Hadley realized that even if he was a "close friend" she knew jack shit about him. It didn't bother her as much as it put things in perspective. "A stoner of a brother eh? Reminds me of high school." She could relate, at least from what Basil had mentioned, to his brother.
"Lively is an understatement man, I mean step-dad... well ex step-dad usually indicates some family drama." It was weird being straight up about her family, usually she just said 'my dad and mom', no mention of ex relations or the screwed up bloodline. "Baby momma drama to be honest." She put a hand over her mouth as she mumbled it with a sigh.
Basil had a point, why put himself through all that trouble when his parents didn't seem to care. "What about your brother though? And I mean, do you at least see them once in a while?"

Basil let out a laugh as he poured tea into two tea cups, placing those tea cups on a little tray along with a sugar dish, a dish of cream, a few lemon slices, and two spoons. Gingery, he placed the tray down onto the coffee table and took a seat beside Hadley, picking up one of the tea cups and fixing it just he way he liked it. He offered the other cup to her, sure that Hadley must have been getting thirsty from all the cookies. "No, I don't ever talk to him, or them, of lately. And you know," Basil answered, setting his spoon aside once he was finished with it, taking a sip from his perfectly prepared cup of tea. "I'm alright with that. I've been getting along fine without them. I honesty don't see the need to bother them with my business, nor have them in mine."That coldness Basil was used to showing really came out when he talked about his family. Not because he felt the need to shield himself from Hadley, but he felt a sort-of resentment towards them. "However, it must be nice, having some family that you don't resent or hate. You seem to really be attached to your younger siblings, the way you spoke about them. 'Heaven sent' you said?" Basil continued on with a smile.

She took the cup and stared into it. Hadley rarely drank tea, she was a black coffee gal through and through. She figured her distaste for all the cream and sugar in coffee would apply to tea, and she was right. "This is really good oh my god." She'd have to try making some at home later.
"Well, you know your family best. If you don't want them in your life, you're all grown, it makes sense." It was a bit sad though, disconnection from your family could be hard. She wondered if anything had happen to make them grow apart or if it had always been like that. Asking about it seemed rude though so she happily answered his question.
"Oh yeah! They are the best little kids ever. I love them so much! Haven't seen them in a while though. I think they are visiting soon?" Hadley wasn't quite sure but she hoped they would.
Her eyes looked down at her cup for a second and that was when she registered that he had taken a seat beside her. Sitting in a car next to him was different but actually sitting on his couch with him, in his house, she didn't know how to feel. "U-uh." Great, now her voice was getting stuck in her throat. It wasn't like chugging a cup of burning hot tea would help either. "So how do you... make fish and chips anyways?"

He noticed her sudden awkwardness, but wasn't sure how to act on it, so he answered her questions instead, hoping that would've been good enough. The only problem was that her awkwardness was beginning to spread to him, too. "We, uh, I fry it--I mean...I bake the fries, really. They taste better that way, but I fry up the fish, batter it up and fry it in my frying pan. I don't have a deep fryer," Basil responded, talking with one hand and holds his tea cup with the other. It was strange, trying to talk about dinner with her. Again, it was that thing he wasn't used to: social interaction. He was actually trying to get along with someone, to get to know them better. Basil was honestly surprised at himself. He never would have thought that he would be brave enough to do that type of thing again. It was a little pathetic to think that, now that he did think about it, but it was true. Perhaps he really was a loser just trying to break out of that horrible shell.

If an awkward silence ensued, she would have a problem. Those were the bane of her existence and she'd be damned if she'd let it happen. "That sounds... good. Man anything home cooked sounds good." She let out a stilted chuckle. "I feel ashamed, you probably make you're own meals more than I do."
The tea she had been sipping on was gone now, and she gritted her teeth trying to think of what to say. She almost let a 'sorry' slip out, but she cut herself off and shook her head as if to say nevermind. This was pitiful, Hadley couldn't even keep herself calm around him or around anyone she wanted to actually get to know.
"I... I haven't really hung out with someone like this in uh... in a while." She couldn't stop herself from saying what was on her mind. It was nagging at her brain and maybe an excuse would make things better? She could only hope because at the moment her words didn't soothe herself at all.

Hearing those last few words come out of her mouth were a bit of a surprise. The others, not so much. His eyes widened a little bit from the surprise of them, but furrowed his brows all the same. "That's really shocking, coming from you. I mean, you're so loud and outgoing--Er, what I mean is... You're very noticeable. You stand out in a crowd. You're so quick to voice your opinion on things that it shocks me to hear that you don't really talk much with others.
"It's not much of a surprise on my end, though. I haven't talked with someone like this in a really long time, either. I tend to push them away with how cold I can be. Nobody wants to talk with a person who's going to snark at them, right?" Basil finally asked with a snicker. "Would you like more tea?"His own cup was almost empty and he decided since he was about to fill his own, he would be a good host and fill Hadley's as well. Sometimes he knew that he was doing it, other times he didn't, but he would quickly find out when the person would scoff at him and chew him out on "being a know-it-all" or "acting like he doesn't care". It was sad because, some of the time he did care, but he didn't know how to show it properly. The other times they were probably right in their assumptions that he couldn't care less. When he filled his tea cup, he sat the kettle back down and fixed his tea how he liked it once more, but he didn't take a sip afterwards. Instead, he gripped the cup tightly, looking down into the caramel-colored liquid. "Are you... having fun?"

His opinion of her was correct, in some ways. When alone she felt the need to put herself on the spot, almost forcing herself into the center of attention out of nervousness. "I guess... I just felt the need to yell at you when I met you. I'm not always like that." She smiled slyly before going on to reprimand him.
"Hey! Youre snark isnt that bad! Very endearing." At least to her it was, snarky banter was always fun right? "Nah, I'm good thanks."
Hadley fondled the empty tea cup in her hands, staring down into it before setting it down on the table in front of her. His question caught her off guard, forcing her to look up at him staring into his cup like she had just been doing. "Fun?" The way he asked it was like a kid who was throwing their first birthday party and not many people showed up.
"Of course I'm having fun! I haven't felt this comfortable," well, as comfortable as she could get around him. "in a while!"
"Its really nice to be able to have someone to talk to and not hate my guts." Too many times had she thought she had a friend and they ended up getting fed up with her real fast.

He looked up from his tea cup and the worried expression on his face became more apparent when his gaze met hers, though he started to look a lot more at ease with her response. Basil smiled, his whole face seeming to light up with everything that she said. She liked his snark, the way he spoke, she was enjoying herself and not only those things, but she was comfortable around him. That alone made him all the happier. "I'm really glad, then. I was worried that you wouldn't... and that would've been absolutely terrible... Not to mention humiliating..."he replied, rubbing his thumb over the heated porcelain. "I don't think I could ever hate your guts."Wait... Did that just come out of his mouth? Did he just say that out loud? His face lit up red like Christmas and he looked away from Hadley, looking anywhere but at her. He didn't mean to say that out loud. Especially right at her face! Well, he figured it wasn't that big of a deal, but he knew what he meant by it and that was enough to make him self-conscious. What if she knew what he meant by it? What if she felt uncomfortable by it? He wouldn't dare want to make her feel that way, or pressured into anything-- Aw hell, it was just a mention of not hating her. It wasn't like he was asking her to stay the night-- His face reddened even more, if possible, and he was really starting to feel all sorts of uncomfortable just at his own inner voice. He wished it would shut up!

It was way too easy to hate her, at least thats what she thought. It was nice of him to say that however, and it brought a smile to her face. "Lets hope so, I mean-" He suddenly turned red and she had to stop and think.
Holy shit did I do something? She checked her person for anything out of the ordinary then looked around and found nothing. Hadley wanted to ignore it but the atmosphere made her cheeks heat up too. "W-what?" He was acting so strange she couldn't help but wonder if she did something.
"Basil, are you ok?" She let out a stilted laugh, not wanting to ridicule him but feeling too awkward not to at least smile.

Oh god, oh god. She--she was blushing, too. Had she realized what he meant? Did she know what he was thinking? Did she somehow have mind-reading skills? He hoped to god that she didn't because wow... that would be embarrassing. "N-no, no! You didn't do anything! I-I jut... It.. it's nothing, nothing at all," Basil hurriedly responded and sat his cup down on the tea tray. With that done, he quickly took a moment to look at the time and he took a deep breath, noting it. "Are... I mean... You're still staying for dinner, right? I mean... Do you still want to stay for dinner? Are you hungry?"He was asking so many questions and rambling and, god dammit, now she was smiling. That smile made him smile, but his own was sheepish and a little crooked from awkwardness rather than suave and alluring. With slightly shaky hands, he reached for his teacup again and attempted to take a sip, trying to calm his nerves. He hoped that it would, even a little, because boy... was he ever on edge. He'd understand if she didn't want to stay for dinner anymore and god only knows she'll most likely say no even if Basil did manage to ask her to stay the night. Though, to be honest...he really, really wanted to ask her.
