| It isn't in the job description to hand deliver packages to people, but David doesn't mind going the extra mile. After all, he doesn't know how well people handle packages.
Do they handle the ones labeled fragile with care? Do they just toss around the ones without a label? Are they bias towards people they don't like and purposely drop boxes to damage what's inside? Do they try to read letters that belong to others? All questions David asks himself when he's on the job.
Today is a special day though. Today is the day he's going to make one of his regulars - one Miss. Isobel Hurst - smile, and he's going to succeed in it.
With her box of whatever she orders tucked under his arm very carefully, he pushes the up button on the elevator. He's got a disposable camera tucked into his back pocket and a small smile printed across his face per usual.
The elevator dings and the doors open, he gets in and greets the people exiting with a smile. They don't reply and he pushes the button to go to Isobel's floor.
The elevator goes all the way up to Isobel's floor without a hitch. It comes to a stop on her floor, dings and the doors open. He greets the person entering with a smile, and they give him a slightly awkward smile.
David thinks that's better than being ignored.
He makes his way down the hall and stops at Isobel's door. He makes sure the box is safely tucked under his arm before knocking on the door three times.
"Package for Miss. Isobel Hurst." He says.

Isobel is organized and methodical in everything she does. But she isn't a neat freak. When she opens her apartment door, the insides aren't perfectly neat. She is a busy woman – a few art supplies scattered about, a jacket hanging over the back of the couch – nothing notably revolting or messy. Just not the perfectly arranged décor that most people seem to be expecting. When she opens the door, she already knows who it is. The only mailman who would bother to deliver her packages himself – most would leave it for pick up, and that she doesn't mind. It's not so much the delivery she minds as the person doing it. She considers just pretending she isn't home – but she's been waiting for this package for weeks now, a pricey set of brushes. She sighs, makes her way to the door, in shorts and a t-shirt splattered with paint. The door swings open, and she holds out a hand for her package wordlessly, meeting his eyes pointedly. She's not normally one to be rude, but it isn't as if it would deter him if she was. It isn't as if they play the same dull game every time. CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GANGNAM STYLE

| When the door opens, David flashes her the most charming smile he can pull off.
He can tell that she just wants her package without any hassle today, but he doesn't play that way! His little adventure all the way up here wouldn't be worth it if he walked away now.
"I'm sorry Miss. Hurst, but regarding this package I believe you have a payment that needs to be made before I can hand it over." He says, with a smile. "I believe you owe one of your smiles to me."
David pulls the disposable camera out of his back pocket and holds the viewfinder up to eye and positioning a finger on the button. He shifts the arm the package is tucked under slightly but not enough to do any damage.
"So I," He starts. "I'll be needing that smile now."

She doesn’t return the bright smile, as per usual. Isobel's gaze goes straight to the package, as per usual. The man has introduced himself as David, a name she's committed to memory for some reason. David pulls a disposable camera from his pocket and asks for a smile, staring through the viewfinder with the same beaming grin of a parent at a child's birthday party. Isobel feels like a child. A brow quirked as if to ask if he's really serious about this, she crosses her arms and stares at him; silent and with the same deadpan expression as before, though there is a bit of a frown creeping into it, if anything. They stand, suspended in silence a moment. Isobel sighs. "Can I just have my package?" She isn't going to smile. He can't wait here forever. | "Sorry to disappoint Miss. Hurst, but today you're my last delivery today," He says from behind his camera. "Plus, I told my fiancée I'd be coming home late, so I don't have anything else to do today."
He knows that''s not what she wanted to hear, but he's come prepared for the worst case scenario, well, second worst case scenario. He's not so dedicated that he'd sit outside her house until tomorrow if she closes the door on him and gives up the package.
"So, if you want this package, you better put up a smile soon." He says.
His smile flickers from an innocent smile to a mischievous smirk for a second before flickering back. He's rather excited to see her smile. She's a pretty girl - nothing compared to his fiancee though! - but pretty girls who smile are twenty times prettier.

The closest she can get to looking directly at David is glaring at him through the viewfinder, looking incredulous and with lips still in a straight, hard line. She can't believe he's gone so out of his way for this, even if he's the most cheerful and dedicated mailman Isobel has ever seen. What is he even going to do with a picture of her smiling? It's a thought that she doesn't even dwell on, because she has no intention of letting him have one. "How late, exactly, do you plan to stay?" She's been waiting on this package for weeks. It's nothing she urgently needs, just something that she would like to have him hand over without all this fuss. How long will she have to stare him down before he does just that? | "How late, exactly, do you plan to stay?"
David shrugs, "I don't exactly have a specific time to leave, but I do have a goal to achieve before I leave."
David knows Isobel just wants him to leave so she can get her package, but he's very determined to get her to smile. He's willing to sit in the hall and wait until tomorrow afternoon when his next shift at the post office starts.
He doubts she'll last that long, she'll give in eventually.
"And I'm sure you've got a general idea of what my goal is." He says.

Why does he want, so desperately, to see her smile? It isn't as if she never ever smiles - she does, but Isobel supposes she's just never had any reason to smile in front of the mailman. She's cordial, she takes her package and signs and says thank you, but getting her mail isn't anything worthy of a smile. Isobel isn't one to be spiteful or petulent, but she feels ridiculous, standing in her apartment doorway with a hand on her hip, glaring at the mailman. [attr="class","tagging"]@isobel "Are you allowed to withhold my package for this?"An awkward smile crosses David's face. "No, this is completely illegal and I could lose my job for it, but hey, yolo, right?"Teenagers and their slang, David figures it's okay to use that acronym in this situation. He's not cliff-diving or anything, but he could possibly lose his job over this. If Isobel decides to report him, but uh, he hopes that she doesn't do that. "But uh, you're not going to report me for this are you?" He says, his smile falter a little bit. David lowers disposable camera from eye-level so he can silently plead Isobel not to report him over the top of it. He doesn't need this job or anything, but he'd prefer not to lose it. It's a pretty cool job after all. Delivering mail and shit, you meet some crazy people when you stop and smell the cardboard boxes everything is packed into. Well not really, smelling cardboard gets you labeled a cardboardophile and laughed at, but it's the thought that counts? "Yolo." She repeats, flatly, the word out of place on her lips, rolling from her tongue in something just short of disgust. It's confirmed, David is one of the most juvenile people she'd ever come across. Isobel sighs. "Of course not." She says. "There is nothing to report you for if you give me my package." There's a bit of challenge in her eyes, glancing to the box he's holding the back up at him. CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GANGNAM STYLE @nan03

"yolo, you only live once right?" he says, it almost sounds like a quesiton. "i hear teens on the street saying it all the time, it's a trend or something right?"
let's be real, david isn't too old, but he doesn't really keep up with every trending word on twitter. yolo wasn't even in his vocabulary until a few weeks ago, and he's been using it ever since. most of his co-workers have gotten used to it, but a few of them just groan and punch him - playfully - in the shoulder whenever he says it.
david senses the challenge in isobel's eyes, and challenges her himself. "it's so much more effort to call my work and report me, it takes like five muscles to smile, c'mon," he urges. "it'll take like five seconds for you to smile, i'll take a picture of it, and then you can have your package and i'll be done. easy isn't it?"
david is mentally sweating.

"I know what yolo means." She assured him. She wouldn't be caught dead ever using the word, but she heard it plenty enough to know the meaning. David seemed to forget she was, in fact, a college student.
She raised an arm to press her fingers to her temple in disbelief. She was standing in the doorway of her apartment, a mailman was ransoming her package for a smile, and using words that people (people in general, Isobel thought, but certainly people his age) certainly shouldn't have been using.
"And what are you going to do with a picture of me smiling?" Nothing good.

"I just assumed since it seems like you don't get out a lot that you didn't know," David says honestly. "Sorry for assuming that."
A sheepish grin spreads on his face.
He's telling the truth. Maybe it's the fact that David has never seen Isobel on the streets at random times, or maybe it's just the feeling he gets from her. He's not sure what made him assume that, but he did it so now it's done.
"It's going in my photo album," He says with a big, child-like grin. "I keep a photo album of all my happy customers, well, package receivers, I guess."
"If you don't want to be in there though, that's fine. I'll just take the picture, and never develop it then.".

Maybe she should have been offended, when David said she didn't seem like she got out much. It was true, more or less, and even when she did get out she kept to herself.
But she's in college, of course she spends time around people her age, of course she picks up on things.
He's smiling and she's not sure if he'd joking about the photo album, though she wouldn't be surprised if he very well did have such a thing. He really loves his job, and Isobel supposes she can't fault him for that.
She can fault him for this whole, smiling for her package thing. She sighs. "Look, let's not waste any more time, let me sign for my package."

David shrugs with a smile. He puts the disposable camera he's holding into one of his pockets. He takes the little machine, which is on top of Isobel's package, and holds it out to her.
"You're still not getting your package until you smile though." He says while holding it out to her.
He's a little fearful because she could smile as she's signing for the package and he could miss it, but at least he's got the memory of her smiling. It'd also technically count since he said smile and nothing about having to photograph that smile.
