Since Angel had been released from the hospital, he hadn’t ventured out of the penthouse at all. The blonde merely hid away inside. He didn’t act like himself. Nevada tried to coerce him to come out with him so look around the various boutiques Angel loved shopping at. He just wouldn’t leave the house. Nevada had tried everything he could to cheer up the blonde. Nothing worked. He refused to let Nevada see the impish smile he loved so much on Angel’s perfect lips. The man was at a loss of what to do for his beloved. Then an idea struck him while he was watching TV in down in the family room. If Nevada couldn’t cheer Angel up, surely a pet would. He rushed out of the house shortly after, returning promptly with a small carrier and various bags and boxes. “Angel,” Nevada called out as soon as he had managed to get everything inside. He was panting and a sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead. “Please come downstairs.”ANGEL ALESSI

He had dreams of glass shards, of spiderweb cracks and of the tendons and muscles that glistened beneath his skin. Angel couldn't call them nightmares anymore, because waking up wasn't any sort of relief.
The doctors said he was lucky. His broken bones healed, his cuts and bruises. There were other scars too. But he didn't feel lucky when he thought of the scar that traced a jagged diagonal across his face in pink glistening scar tissue. It made him sick to think about and hysterical to look at.
Vapid, superficial damage had been done, but that was all Angel had ever been - vain and beautiful. Now he was worthless, he was expecting even Nevada's interest to wane as even his own had. He stayed in the bedroom, in the dark, and he didn't care about dressing up or brushing his hair or eating his food. Nevada assured him it wasn't that bad, that he was still beautiful. But it couldn't be covered, Angel couldn't and wouldn't be seen like this. He refused to leave the penthouse, and he lay listening to Nevada moving around the penthouse, cooking, cleaning, reading. He heard him leave and he heard him come back. Usually Nevada came up to check on him, and Angel sat up groggily when he heard his name from downstairs. He took his time, sliding out of bed, his steps still careful and slow, his hand on the railing as he paused halfway down the staircase. He stared down at Nevada, curiosity mild at best.

One blemish on Angel’s perfect face had made him isolate himself from everyone, even Nevada. How many times had Nevada proved that he loved the blonde? He wanted him to be happy. Even if he wore scar for the rest of his life, Nevada didn’t care. He loved Angel not just for his beauty. Love wasn’t so shallow and petty. He wished Angel understood that. But most of all, Nevada just wanted to see Angel smile again. He hated to see the blonde in such a broken state of mind. The tiny creature he had brought home with its twitching nose had to be the cure. “I brought something home for you. Please come down and see it.” He indicated the small carrier at his feet. “I am certain you will love it.”ANGEL ALESSI

Angel frowned. Nevada couldn't leave him alone. He supposed it was comforting to know he still cared for now, but most days it was annoying. Uncharacteristically, Nevada kept suggesting Angel go out, go shopping, go clubbing, go anywhere.
He wanted to say he didn't want it, whatever it was. All he wanted was his face back to normal, his life back to normal. Pursing his lips, Angel stared at his hand on the railing. The promise ring was replaced with a big glittering diamond of an engagement ring.
With only a sigh in response, he padded down the rest of the steps and stood in front of Nevada. "What is it?" He looked down at the carrier, not caring enough to make a guess.

A glint of light winked off the surface of the large diamond perched on the blonde’s finger. Nevada’s eyes were drawn to it and he found comfort in seeing on Angel’s finger. Unfortunately, he seemed less than thrilled to wear the large ring. He had thought his fiancée would be happy to receive such an expensive ring. Yet, nothing seemed to lighten his mood. Was his current attempt another wasted effort? Nevada shook off the thought. He wouldn’t worry about it. Kneeling down, he opened up the carrier as Angel’s voice piped up in question. He gentle grabbed the young rabbit from within and took it out for him to see. “It is for you.” Carefully, he held the small creature up for Angel to take in. ANGEL ALESSI

He combed through his hair with his fingers, pushing it away from his face and working out a knot while he watched Nevada. He blinked, surprised that Nevada had gotten him a pet when he didn't seem to think that Angel could take care of himself.
Stepping closer, he reached out with a bit of hesitance. The rabbit was staring up at him with big bright eyes and twitching whiskers, but he didn't mind it. He couldn't stand the feel of anybody looking at him anymore, even Nevada for all his insistence he was still beautiful. But it was just a rabbit, it wouldn't care. It was tiny and it was precious, and Angel was very hesitant as he took it from Nevada and clutched it to his chest. Its claws were sharp little pinpricks against his hands, and its ears were soft as velvet. A small smile had crept up onto Angel's face.

Nevada wasn’t fond of the concept of pets. They were messy, shedding hair everywhere and destroying furniture. Not to mention that they often defecated in the house before they were fully housetrained, even then some animals still did. Pets were just too unpredictable and chaotic for his liking. But Nevada had lived with Angel long enough to know that owning a pet couldn’t be any different. The expression that crossed Angel’s face at the sight of the rabbit was also a plus. He had never seen such a look on the blonde’s face. He took it in quietly while Angel took the animal in his arms. No regret for his impulsive decision surfaced. Buying the rabbit had been the right thing to do—he hoped. “Do you like it?” Nevada asked. ANGEL ALESSI

Angel had never thought Nevada would get a pet. He had never had one before, when he'd been completely by himself, though he supposed that he had always been something of a pet. The thought made his stomach do a sickening somersault at the thought of being put down like a dog when Nevada was bored of him.
He stroked along the rabbit's back to put himself at least. He looked up at Nevada. "It's cute."

Nevada came closer, hesitantly scratching between the rabbits ears. It was cute. He had thought so when he saw it in the pet shop and hoped Angel would think so as well. Relief washed over him when Angel confirmed his hopes. His eyes wondered back up to Angel’s face then back to the creature in his arms. “Would you like to give it a name?”He was enthralled by this new side of Angel. The gentle way he held the small rodent was different than what Nevada was used to. He was always so careless and rough. Not once had Nevada seen Angel being tender in any way, shape, or form. But now he was seeing it. ANGEL ALESSI

Nevada came closer and Angel almost wanted to step back. He could feel Nevada watching him and it made him want to scream and cry because he knew what he was seeing. He tensed, avoiding meeting Nevada's eyes while he watched the rabbit in his arms.
He had always wanted a pet, though he'd never had the time or money (or patience) for one before. He chewed the inside of his cheek. "Is it a boy or girl?" he lifted it under its armpits to check - it squirmed in his hold.

He moved in to close the distance between him and Angel. Yet, from the panic flashing in Angel’s eyes, it seemed an invisible barrier rose up to bar his path. Nevada stepped back to allow the space to form between them again. Deep inside, however, he longed to hold the blonde in his arms and hiss him tenderly. He didn’t care that Angel’s perfect visage was marred by a jagged pink scar. Looks had nothing to do with his love of the blonde. It was different for Angel. His looks were all he used to have before Nevada. On some level, they had brought them together. “I am unsure. I did not think to ask the clerk about it.” He didn’t want the touch the small creature after he picked it out. All that mattered was that Angel liked it. After that, Nevada didn’t care. “I bought a book on rabbits if that if helpful in determining its gender.”ANGEL ALESSI

He looked the rabbit over, though he couldn't see much of anything when it kicked and struggled. With a shrug, he crouched down to set the rabbit down. "Doesn't matter, I guess." Angel said, watching as it made a few tentative hops and sniffed at the ground.
Angel didn't look up at Nevada. His fiancé. They were going to get married, but since the accident a coldness had settled into Angel, and it wedged them apart. Angel had drawn back into himself, in a defeated sort of way.
"Thanks." he mumbled.
Shuffling a few crouched steps over, he ran a hand along the arch of the rabbit's back.

Indifference radiated from the blonde, who crouched down to pet the small rabbit. The glimpse he saw when Angel first took the creature in his arms had all but vanished. Nevada’s heart faltered. “The gender is important for determining the name.” Didn’t Angel feel the same? The thank you was hallow and didn’t help Nevada feel any better. “Angel. I want to see you smile.” He said suddenly without thinking it through “It pains me to see you so disheartened. Your happiness is all I care about because you are my beloved. I love you with all my heart. Please smile.”ANGEL ALESSI

Angel had never thought gender mattered much at all. Least of all for a rabbit. It must be nice, to not care about anything but hopping around and eating carrots. He used to not care about anything too.
There was a slight shift in Nevada's tone when he next spoke, and Angel froze, staring down at the ground. He felt a lump rising in his throat, nausea churning in his gut, when Nevada said those things. He felt angry because they weren't true. They couldn't be true. Nobody would love him as he was now. It was just pity.
"What do I have to smile about?" He said bitterly, finally raising his head. He didn't quite meet Nevada's eyes, finding a spot near his head, in the distance to stare at while he blinked back his tears.

Angel’s words stabbed at him like knives. What did he have to smile about? The answer should have been as obvious as the giant diamond on his finger. Nevada had shown just how deep his feelings for Angel were. He stood by him despite the scar marring his face. “Our future together.” Nevada said after a few minutes of tense silence. “I gave you that ring as a promise that I will remain by your side and love you until death do we part. Is that not enough?” The rabbit was meant as another symbol of his devotion. He had gone and bought a pet though he had no liking for them. Nevada would do anything for Angel, no matter what.
