Ornella's bakery was like her pet. She kept a little piece of cloth tucked in her apron pocket to rub at the counters or the cappuccino machine when she felt it needed a spot more of shine. She carefully pruned the the flowers planted in the window ledges outside. She poured over the math of running a small business, from insurance to wages to inventory every Monday and Thursday. She designed gorgeous cakes and pastries for their special catering services, leading the staff she'd scrambled to put together. Most importantly, Ornella wanted to adopt her employees as her apprentices whether they be kitchen assistants or cashiers. Though her team was small, she wanted it to be well-rounded and intelligent.
Which was why she was hosting this little staff meeting. It was eight o'clock, sharp, two hours before closing on a Tuesday night. Business only trickled in. Ornella would take care of the register if any new costumers entered, but for now, the place was quiet and needed minimal attendance.
Setting down a tray of mint tea and a special batch of strawberry tarts and meadow cream, she began to pass out the delights and then pour out the tea for her people. While she did this, she spoke:
"I would like to make these meetings a regular thing, dears. They make a good opportunity for you all to tell me about the shop, what you notice sells and doesn't sell, what people love the taste of, and what people become bored with. But I also want to make this a chance for you to get something out of the time you spend here working for me - If you want to learn about making sweets, or the business. I know I hired you all rather quickly, and I never got to ask you in the beginning of it all, but why did you choose to work for a pastry shop?"
