'CAUSE IT'S GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE WE'RE TURNING ON THE LIGHTS DOWN THE HALLS OF TIME FLIP ON THE SWITCH ILLUMINATE THE FUTURE STANDING STILL WAS PERHAPS THE HARDEST TASK FOR JULIUS TO ACCOMPLISH when he had no role to fulfill and was left with the simple order to wait. Easy enough was it to convince himself of becoming a stoic character who adhered to nothing but procedures and rules, and easy enough would it be to force his physique to remain on a seat—but he, at heart, was neither a stickler for proper finesse nor a stationary fellow, and if he didn't have to play pretend, he didn't.
Five seconds after the door clicked shut behind him, remnants of words telling him to wait faintly lingering his mind, Julius had already began fidgeting, tossing his ankle across the other, honey-hued irises thrusting around the office that belonged to his future partner—a person, a woman, he had yet to meet since his stay in Nova Athenis. Spare major accomplishments and what he had been told, the blonde didn't know what she looked like, but whether she had warts grown on the tip of her nose or only four toes and three missing fingers, what he did care about were the feats he had heard the other officers crone about; her undercover work that blew a human trafficking scandal, her involvement in the take-down of a drug lord were a few to name. "You're in good hands," they'd say.
Ten seconds passed, and Jules stood, breaking free from the order to sit and wait as he trekked around the orderly confines, taking a gander at possible personal objects—picture frames, snow globes, anything—that would have indicated the personality of his assigned superior. Surveying the desk centered in the room, he plucked a pen from its container, twirling it between his fingers while he lifted his gaze to a shelf, scanning through titles of books. Upon closer inspection did he acknowledge the furniture had collected a bit of dust, and as he was about to pull a novel from its brethren of text and documents, the click and twist of the doorknob signaled him to stop snooping.
Immediately, the bespectacled youth turned, eyes meeting the dark orbs of an unfamiliar woman. This must have been his partner, he thought. "You must be Jones? Desideria Jones? Did I get that right?" was what he said after a second, grin stretched upon his lips, "Nice to meet'cha! I'm Julius Spencer, but I'd prefer it if you call me Jules instead! I'm not one for formalities, so would it be fine to call you by a nickname? Do you have one—a nickname, I mean?" Without waiting for her to speak, and without skipping a beat, he continued, "If you haven't already guessed yet, you're looking at the face of your new partner! Fresh out of the academy! Aren't you lucky, heh!"
He moved toward her desk, briefly breaking eye contact to return the pen he acquired to its rightful place, "So, do you need me to bring you up to speed with what's been going around the station? Seems like you've taken a pretty lengthy holiday. I was getting pretty lonely, y' know, thought my future partner didn't want me." Plopping his rear onto the chair he abandoned earlier, he playfully added, "I reckon you haven't brought any souvenirs?"

She so wasn't ready to be back at work. A rather large cup of tea in hand, the woman walked down the rows of desks in the department, nodding her head towards the detectives that acknowledged her being there. As one of the leading undercover police officers, she was sorely missed. She paused by one desk, speaking quietly to the man behind it before her eyes raised to another voice, the chief coming towards her. "Your new partner's waiting in your office. Don't keep him waiting too long" He commented, patting her on the back. Desideria blinked slowly, watching as he walked away, before glancing towards her office door. The detective she was speaking to patted her hand, before angling his head towards the door. With a slow breath, the black-haired woman pushed away from the desk, walking over to the door and pushing it open. As soon as she walked in, she blinked. He looked like just a kid, with the same kind of enthusiasm, already asking her questions. Dex waited till he had finished talked, moving towards her desk and setting her bag down in the hair, hand still securely around her tea travel mug. She glanced out the window behind her desk, then turned around to face the new face. The glasses seemed to be overly big for his face, but they didn't bother him, it seemed like. Dex put her mug down on the table, then crossed her arms. He was a talker, it would seem. She thought he was done speaking when she moved to open her own mouth, then paused again as he spoke once more. So this was Julius Spencer? Strange, on the papers she had read before, his surname had been Stode. Perhaps an alias he used? If they were going to be partners, she would have to figure that out. "Yes, I would be Desideria. But only my partners called me that. Everyone else calls me Dex." The raven-haired woman managed to get in, after she was sure he was done speaking. Her eyes moved around the office once more, trying to figure out how they would fit another desk in. Her and her former partner used to share a desk, but she really didn't want to do that with someone she just barely met. The difference between her former partner was that she had known him her whole life. This kid, fresh out of the academy, was someone very different. She rolled her shoulders back slightly as she finally sat down in her chair, crossing her knee over the other as she looked him up and down. Well, he would work for their next case. "I've stayed pretty up to date. I may have been on holiday, but I like keeping in touch with the office as well" Dex commented, pulling a couple files off her desk and opening them up. She immediately snapped the first one closed, shaking her head a bit as she was once again faced with the death of her best friend. Shaking her head, the black-haired woman turned her eyes back onto Julius. "What made you want to work in this area of the department, Jules?"tag: @jules ▪ ooc: let's do this ayu |D |

'CAUSE IT'S GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE WE'RE TURNING ON THE LIGHTS DOWN THE HALLS OF TIME FLIP ON THE SWITCH ILLUMINATE THE FUTURE NOBODY HAD TO SAY ANYTHING FOR JULIUS TO UNDERSTAND HE INCIDENTALLY STEPPED INTO a role that had once belonged to another, nobody had to tell him his future colleague recently lost a close ally because he understood what the heavy silence meant when he had first been introduced as the new partner; he was a replacement, in other words, and from observing the multiple pairs of eyes that stared back at him, he knew people were already comparing him to a ghost.
But no matter the unsaid thoughts relayed to the blonde, no matter the pressure that came down on him to fulfill a hole a deceased person left, the only opinion who mattered was the woman before him. Would she be able to set her loss aside and focus on the present? Would she be able to see him as not a mere replacement, but a comrade? Julius studied her while her eyes, in turn, inspected him, and continued to do so even after she suspended her visual study to retrieve a number of documents, "They weren't kidding when they said I had my work cut out for me, huh! You really are on top of things—which is a shame! Reading up on all the cases that have happened during your absence have gone to waste! Poof, just like that! And here I was, hoping to impress you as your new protégé." Eyes narrowed slightly, mentally noting the peculiar reaction Desideria had upon opening a folder. Evidently, the holidays away hadn't been enough to mend her trauma.
Tearing his caramel capsules from the experienced officer, the twenty-two year old lightly pushed his glasses against the bridge of his nose and drew his focus onto his attire, plucking lint off of his shirt while he answered her question, "Simple reason: we don't have to wear uniforms as much," and then he shook his head, apparently kidding, "Nah, but really, you can take an easy shot at why if you've read my file," hinted the youth, turning his eyes to the elder with a sheepish grin; two years in a theater arts school must have been a clue.
"A-ny-way," he clapped his hands, "I've been told we were supposed to get comfortable with each other? I bet you've read about me, 'cause I've definitely read stuff about you, but there's only so much plain ol' text can do! Even if I've got a squeaky clean reputation, I'd be right to say you're still meh about me, yeah?" Scooting forward on his seat, the curve upon his lips widened, "What I'm saying, if you catch my drift, is that we should go out! Right now! That way, we can learn about each other in our natural human-y habitat! How do you like the sound of that? Far as I know, we've got time to kill."
"I'll earn my right to be called your partner," he added, but really, for the sake of an effective partnership, Julius only wanted to know if she was willing to put as much effort into the relationship as he was more than ready to give.

It wasn't that she was comparing this new partner to her old partner, no not at all. Really, she was sizing him up. Dex had never had another partner. She'd always been with her childhood friend. At the moment, even the thought of his name caused her pain, which she hated most of all. She was suppose to be the strong front of the department. Sure, she hadn't been with them long, three years at most, but that didn't meant she hadn't made a big impression on everyone. And most everyone had known her partner as well. Needless to say, those she had grown close to over the years were a bit protective of her, and the fresh meat was unsettling them. A sigh escaped Dex as she listened to him once more. Of course she had stayed up to date. This hadn't been a holiday she'd taken willingly. The department had told her she needed to take the time off. "You'll still need to impress me" She commented, reaching for a her cup and taking a sip. She grimaced slightly at the bitter taste before putting it down once more. Her legs were crossed over each other as continued to observe him. He seemed younger than what his file said. The glasses didn't help at all in thinking he really was fresh out of the academy. A slow breath slipped from between her lips as she tossed the file back on her desk. His explanation of why he chose to be in this particular department made the woman raise her eyebrow slightly. Sometimes, she wished her brother had that type of motivation to do something. But that was another problem for another day. True, she had read his file. The name that he had trained with seemed oddly familiar, but she had shaken it off. When you were in the business, most names sounded familiar. And what exactly had he read on her? All her files were classified, and it wasn't until a week or so ago that she had even heard of the name Julius Spencer. And then the suggestion came up, and it made Desideria uncertain. They were going to be exposed, huh? She wasn't really sure how she felt about that, but she supposed she would have to learn to trust him sometime. "Might as well see what's different on the island. How Long have you been here, Julius? Or are you native to Nova?" Desideria questioned as she stood up and grabbed her jacket, making her way around the desk and towards the door. She opened it, waiting for her new partner. tag: @jules ▪ ooc: let's do this ayu |D |
