There is nothing like a salon to peel open the lips of a reserved fellow. The light, feminine chatter, the cool acetone baths, and the faintly sweet aroma of hairspray make Isaac feel clean and in order. He is in a fine mood when he sits his tuffet down on the stool, prim in his pinstripe suit. He seems like a father with six daughters, so at ease he is with the nail file and clear polish, only he hasn't even a sister. He places his fingers in front of the girl he usually asks for. She's been doing his nails ever since he came to Nova Athenis.
Isaac's fingernails have not a spec of dirt under them, but their edges are ragged and showed signs of biting. Polish certainly helped curbed the damage. He sighed when she began.
"I landed the promotion," his lips curled up as he exhaled. Then he leaned in and whispered, "Junior partner."

Not many men come into the salon, but Camille thinks that they should. There's nothing emasculating about taking care of yourself, and nice hands are always noticed, especially for men who work with their hands. And she's sure that Isaac does, shuffling papers or motioning dramatically in the court room - she likes to think of him as the good guy, putting away criminals and protecting the innocent.
Camille nods as he speaks, glances up from her filing occasionally. "Oh! Congratulations!" She exclaims at the good news. "What does that mean, then?"

Mr. Kirsch is an honest man, but only in the sense that he would never commit perjury. When it comes to leading others to believe he is a glamorous lawyer, pointing at the criminals, at the crying widows, and finally, at the evidence that all stacks up - he will right along his way and let that be so. On the contrary, Mr. Kirsch's affairs are mundane, repetitive, and tedious. At their most interesting, his cases are petty squabbles ad midst the corporate giants.
"Well, my office is by the window now. Its not a corner office," he said with a hint of tension, "but the window spans the entire wall and you know? It feels good to know that I'm appreciated enough for it."
Camille had an elegant quality to her work. She looked like she knew what she was doing, and she probably did, with her filing and her nail snipping. It was why Mr. Kirsch always asked for her. "I appreciate you, too, Camille," he said, matter-of-factly. If she were a secretary, he would insist on hiring her.

To Camille law seems a very difficult and abstract thing, and Mr. Kirsch must be a genius to navigate the big law books and the corrupt opponents. But she doesn't understand any of it, so she never asks. Rankings and partnerships she doesn't understand, but promotions and big windows she does understand.
"Of course, it must be a lovely view!" She sighs dreamily. "Reminding you of all the people you're helping." Camille adds as she returns to filing. Most people think of lawyers as corrupt, but Camille likes to think of everybody as a good guy.
Camille beams. "Thank you, Mr. Kirsch. I appreciate your business." He always asks for her, after all, and they chat and laugh and that makes them friends.

Law is a mess of late nights, caffeine, highlighter pens, and photocopy machines. The details are incredible dull. But the view is very nice, and so, it is something Isaac proudly shares.
"Of course you do," Isaac says with a puff in his chest. He knows he is an incredible man to do business with, sharp, keen, and astute. "And how is business for you these days? You do an incredible day to day job, nothing like the spas in Iceland - they are a whole other level - but you get yourself by well, I hope?"

Mr. Kirsch is a very confident man, but Camille thinks he's one of those people who should be. Well, she thinks everyone should glow with pride because everyone has to have done something wonderful and deserving before.
But Mr. Kirsch is a hero.
"Oh, yes," She tells him, pausing to blow a bit of dust from filing from his hands. "Business is great, so many lovely ladies - and handsome men - always coming in." She loves her job.
For a second, she stops filing. "I think it would be wonderful to have a spa of my own one day." Camille admits, in the airy tone of one caught in a daydream. She doesn't know anything about business and she doesn't care about profits; but how wonderful would it be, how many people's days could she brighten up?
But of course, she's working now, and it's just a silly dream she's always had. Camille flashes him a sheepish smile and returns to shaping and buffing his nails into a perfect state.
