He didn’t mind silence – it was smoother than any conversation, that seemed to sputter and die out quickly whenever Minzhe was involved. There was a stain on the wall across from him, and his eyes traced the shape. It was curving, it was crooked, it was irregular.
He turned to his sister, watching the dish precariously sitting on her knee, her hands – her slender and pale, stained fingers working a box from her pocket. He took it in the palm of a hand, pulling the top off in a slow, careful motion and glancing from the carved jade to Fangyin with a blank expression. Then a hint of a smile.
"There is no luck." He murmured, tracing a finger along the velvet lining before he lifted the necklace, watching the pendant spinning slowly in the air. "But it's beautiful." He added earnestly. Minzhe didn't believe in superstition or fortune – he believed in probability – but this was a gift from his sister and he was truly pleased.

Her gaze followed the necklace, as she wrapped an arm around his. The plate on her leg was threatening to fall, and it would've, if she hadn't had caught it just inches from the ground with her free hand. Placing it on the table now, she ignored it and smiled for favour of her brother's attention, instead.
"Isn't it? I love the colour of jade..." Her voice quivered, as her body seemed to try and be as physically close to him as possible, head not quite reaching the curve of his neck. "So hauntingly beautiful... Good jade, especially."
She looked up at him again, this time a little numbly.
"I... r-really missed you... brother..." Words suddenly chocked out and spluttered like a dying engine. An influx of emotion came rarely, and her whole body seemed to shake because of it. Yin tried to close her eyes to will the tears to stop, but it didn't work.

Minzhe watched the pendant a moment, glinting even in the cheap overhead lighting of the apartment, before he set it in his palm. His arm was still and limp as Fangyin's wound around it, nodding along as she praised the jade. The patterns in the stone were natural and wild, but it was smooth and symmetrical in shape, perfectly so.
At her next words, there was a quiver in her voice and her frame, and Minzhe tore his eyes away to survey Fangyin. She was pressing against him tight, as if she could absorb him into herself, get her fill for all the time they'd missed. His spindly fingers curled around the jade stone, his palm turned over and his hand hovering uncertainly a moment before he let it drop to his lap.
"I'm sorry." He murmured, hands free to wrap around her shoulders, holding them firmly to stop her shaking.

His apology somehow triggered something deep inside of her, like a switch she forgotten she even had in possession.
She wailed then, like a five year old, suddenly forgetting the consequences of such behaviour. So many things happened in the wake of his departure, and Fangyin was too emotional to tell it all in one evening. Somewhere along the line events became stories, stories, fables. Yet each one could still cut, still draw blood.
"I must be a bother right! I shouldn't have come, I shouldn't be here, I shouldn't come, I'm such a bother!" She wailed again, wanting to say everything but only ugly streams of tears flooded down her face. "B-But there's... nothing to go back to now. Everything's gone!" Her hand grabbed a fistful of Minzhe's clothing.

She cried then. Cried like Minzhe hadn't seen her cry in a long time - not even when she lost her eye. She cried like a baby being brought into the world, and Minzhe sat in petrified silence like somebody not sure what to do with it. She was his sister, he cared for her, deeply. But that didn't change the fact that Minzhe knew nothing about feelings and comfort.
He could only take her in her arms and hope his presence soothed her in the way it seemed to. He buried his nose in her hair. "No. I was worried for you." He said. "We're together now, I'll look after you. Stay here and everything will be fine." His one bedroom apartment wasn't luxurious or spacey, but neither of them had ever cared much for the material. Minzhe didn't care for much beyond his own and the wellbeing of his sister.

Her body trembled.
"I had dreams," She said helplessly, chocked out through sobs and a rich, vivid sense of despair. "I saw your back. I don't want that. Cousins said I was silly. Stupid. That you didn't want me. That I'm not good enough to support you. That I shouldn't want, shouldn't hope, because I have no place... anywhere! They didn't let me leave. Why... why didn't you take me with you? Why didn't you do... that..." Like a tap, the tears that flowed down her face gradually lessened and stopped. Fangyin breathed heavily, but eventually fell asleep on Minzhe's shoulder, tired out by weeks of work and a day's walk.

His lips are dry and gaping as he listens to her; crying, speaking. She shook and by some miracle, by his way of detachment, Minzhe sat steady and held her tightly. He didn't know how to respond. Their cousins didn't understand a thing, the two of them sat far apart from the rest of the family and did fine that way.
It had been selfish, undoubtedly, to leave her behind. Maybe he could tell himself she had been better off. They were both being hunted now, but it was selfish to want her to stay.
He sat still, silent for a stretch, before her head grew unbearably heavy on his shoulder and Minzhe cradled her head gently laying her down.
