Downtown was certainly interesting, or at least it was interesting in the daylight. It was even better at night, with the lights shining bright and the smells that would waft from every storefront as if it were trying to coax him in. Not to mention the people who'd yell at just about anyone if they stood in their way too long, those people were always Augustus's favorites -- if only because they continued to make a point that they were never in the wrong.
Then again, Augustus didn't think he cared much. As far as he cared, downtown was where two of his favorite people stayed, Kieran and Iggie, and for the most part that was all that mattered. He kept telling himself that as he headed into a shabbier looking apartment building, and threw on a big smile as he knocked on a door.
Eventually, he called out.
"Cousin Kieran? Are you in?"

It was supposed to be a relaxing morning. You know, there wasn't very many times when Kieran woke up the morning alone, sober and content. Usually it was just one of the three, with the other two up in the air. But things were changing, even if it was just a little, and that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
Climbing out of his bed, sheets cold and crinkled due to the season changes and the fact that the damn landlord was too cheap to turn on the heaters yet. It was a pretty nice building, but that didn't stop the landlord from being a complete asshole, he supposed. Throwing on a sweatshirt, his bare feet slid across the wood floors as he scuttled into the kitchen to make a pot of coffee.
Pouring the steaming brew into a mug he took a few long drinks before reaching for one of the pill bottles on the counter. It's like he wasn't even trying to hide his addiction anymore. Everyone probably knew about it. The police weren't doing anything about it. So why should he care about hiding his bottles?
Popping the pills into his mouth he swallowed them dry and followed with a swig of coffee. He was about to finish off his first cup when he heard a knocking on the door, and then a voice call out. It was a familiar voice, but the words were muffled by the door.
Ambling over to the front door he unlocked it and swung it open, seeing a short blonde boy standing on the other side. Kieran wondered for a second what a sight he must be - sweatshirt, boxers, messy ponytail with hair sticking up every which way - but didn't care much when he realized who it was.
"What d'you want, Augustus?" he said, a bit of a groan lingering in his voice. While his younger cousin was, well, family of course, he didn't want to spend time listening to the kid hero-worship Iggie. In fact, maybe if he stuck around a bit longer he'd be able to see Iggie stumble in still drunk from the night before. Maybe he'd get to watch Iggie puke all over the rug. That would be a sight, wouldn't it?

Once his knuckles had connected with the door, Augustus felt a surge of hesitation. What if his cousin didn't want to do anything? Or, better yet, what if his cousin was in another one of his moods (that had been the name he'd given the occasional times that he'd caught his cousin and brother not-so sober)? If he were being truly honest with himself, Augustus wasn't certain if he'd be able to stick around if Kieran was going to be a pain to deal with, and for a split second he debated the possibility of leaving. Kieran wouldn't mind, in fact there wasn't a doubt in Augustus's mind that his cousin would brush it off as a prankster, and that would be the end of that.
In fact, judging by the sluggish footsteps from behind the door, Augustus could totally make it. He'd be down the stairs and facing the sun and angry company of strangers in no time.
But then the door swung open, and Augustus figured that it was probably too late to run off now. Not that Kieran would probably mind, his cousin was a great person who chose not to mind much, but it seemed rude. Augustus had gone all this way, and for what reason exactly? His legs seemed to carry him in the direction he'd walked many times before, and it almost felt like a sudden reality check when he looked Kieran in the face, same dopey smile that he always wore dawning his features.
"I didn't disturb you, did I?" Pause. Cousin Kieran really looked like he'd just woken up. Augustus didn't really notice. "You want to go do something? Go for a walk or see a movie or anything, really."
