Normally, Kieran was the picture of confidence, especially when he had some drugs to help. However, tonight was just different, for a list of reasons. For one, he was actually going on a date.
Kieran never really went on dates. He met girls when he was out at a bar or a club but he rarely ever agreed to meet a girl anywhere. And when he did, it was usually just a little goose chase until he got laid. But this time with Shani was completely different. There was no expectation that he was going to get into bed with her, there was nothing beyond initial attraction.
It would be a lie if he said he wasn't attracted to her, though. And that's why there were nerves blossoming in his gut. Usually-confident Kieran was nervous for a date, and he didn't take any pills to help calm him down beforehand. Iggie was laughing him out the door.
He showed up at the Lotus, a rather nice Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant downtown, a few minutes past seven. Shani was going to meet him here, and while he waited for her to show he grabbed a cigarette from his pocket and perched it between pale lips. Maybe some sort of substance would calm his nerves, even if it wasn't as strong as his usual hit.

Shani had never actually been to the Lotus. The circus didn't really afford the fine dining sort of lifestyle, and truthfully Kieran didn't seem like he did either. But Shani was more interested in getting to know him than assuming anything. And she was sort of excited to try something new. She couldn't say she wasn't curious - about the restaurant, about the guy.
She picked him out easily outside the restaurant. Tall, red hair, cigarette smoke. She wrinkled her nose at the acrid stink of it, but caught his eye with a smile.
"Waiting long?"

He noticed her walking up and quickly extinguished the cigarette, especially after catching the look on her face. In a slight bought of panic he worried that maybe she'd be completely turned off by the smoking, but then Kieran realized that if she had a problem with drugs she'd have a lot of problems with him. He'd just steer clear of that topic right now.
"Hey," he said a bit, tossing his hair from his face with a flick of his chin. "Nah, I wasn't waiting too long. Just got here, actually."
Not wanting to stand outside too long, he waited for her to walk inside before following, trying to be as gentlemanly as possible, letting the Southern charm kick in. Or whatever that was supposed to be. Kieran found himself far from charming, but he had to put it on so he wouldn't scare this girl away so she could disappear for another seven years.
They were showed to their seats and given menus, and Kieran looked over the list. Suddenly, choosing a meal seemed like a heavy decision. If he got a soup it could get too messy, and if he got noodles he'd have to slurp. That cut out a lot of choices.
"Uh, what are you getting?" he asked, glancing up at her over his menu, hoping he could get some ideas from what she wanted.

She felt underdressed, or maybe it was just the establishment that made her feel so outclassed. Either way, Shani walked in as if she belonged there. She took her seat, glancing around before she finally took a look at her menu, scanning the main courses when Kieran spoke.
"I'm not sure yet." Shani shrugged. "The stir fry looks good." She suggested. "I've never been here before." She caught his eye across the table to return the question. He wasn't from around here either, but he seemed more settled than her. Maybe because Shani didn't have much practice with settling.
"Do you like spicy food?"

He couldn't help but let out a grin at her question. Tossing his head to flick some ginger bangs from his eyes, Kieran bit his lip as he thought about all the spicy food he'd eat back home. It was nothing like the spice of Asian cuisine, but it was something he loved.
"You kiddin' me? I practically ate habanero baby food when I was little," he said, obviously exaggerating, though not by much. The thought of pureed habanero peppers was a little disgusting, though, so he regretted bringing that up. Moving past it, he scanned his menu again.
"What about you? I'm assuming yeah, since you asked?" Still, he couldn't be too presumptuous. Looking over the menu again as he waited for an answer, he tried to decide on what he wanted to eat as his eyes settled on a spicy Vietnamese beef and noodle soup.

She chuckled at the image - Kieran seemed more relaxed now, without the nervous jitter of the last time they'd met. "Of course. You should try my cooking." She said, a playful offer before turning her attention back to picking a plate. He had an easy charm about him, conversation came easily.
Shani couldn't help comparing him to how he must have been, or at any rate trying to. As they were finishing their meals, Shani suddenly remembered. "You brought my picture, right? That was the deal." Not that she really cared much about the polaroid now.

He let a small smile perk up on his lips at her suggestion, but didn't want to read too much into it. Then again, if she was offering to see him again, he definitely wouldn't say no. But he didn't say anything, not yet, because he didn't want to seem too desperate or anything. Just take this slow, he told himself, let this progress naturally. Kieran didn't even know what natural was.
They ate and chatted and the soup was a lot spicier than Kieran expected, but he loved it. It was turning out to be a pretty good evening, something that was a bit abnormal as normally something as domestic as a sober date would bore him to death.
And then Shani asked about the picture. Of course, something had to go awry, and the fact that the polaroid was sitting on his dresser at home - not having really moved it since they last met - was the thing. He put it there specifically so he could grab it before he went to see her again, but something in his brain must not have connected.
"Uum," he stuttered, voice breaking a bit. "No. No, I forgot it at home because I...I was just so excited to see you tonight I couldn't think straight."
What a horrible save.
He kept going with it, though, as ideas were popping into his head as he was trying to suavely bullshit his way out of Shani getting upset - but why would she get upset over something like a polaroid? Still, he didn't want to fuck up his chances too bad.
"But, I mean, if you wanted, we could always go back to my place after dinner to pick it up." He smiled again, but nothing like the lecherous or mischievous smile he usually wore, mostly because if he was going to try and be seductive that would probably get a glass of water thrown in his face for being too forward. Then she'd probably never want to see him again, she'd never want him to try her cooking. And that was something Kieran didn't want to lose, for some reason.

He looked nervous, and Shani's brow knit together a little. She liked to think she was approachable enough, that she didn't make anyone nervous. Then again, Kieran seemed that way too; there was still a faint flutter in her chest when she met his eyes.
She broke into a smile. "Sure," Shani didn't miss a beat, didn't hesitate. "That sounds great." Of course it was an excuse, of course the polaroid wasn't that important. But she was interested in seeing his home, a person's space said a lot about them. She was interested in knowing more about Kieran.
He could have been heading an entirely different direction with this, but she'd see once they got there. She wouldn't jump to conclusions.
Shani had the bills separate; she didn't want him to jump to any conclusions.
