She didn’t mind chores. Sure they weren’t her favorite thing in the world, but finishing them made her feel accomplished, and since she was the only one, barring her brother, with the time to keep her family’s residence at some vague level of cleanliness, she was fairly used to the tasks.
The old, cumbersome vacuum whirred as she pushed it along the carpet. It was the least Bennett felt she could do for her new flat-mate, whom was still at school, or work, or whatever, considering he was paying the vast majority of the rent. She didn’t want to admit her discomfort, even fear, in living on the streets. She was used to sleeping out under the stars and filth didn’t scare her at all. But the city was different, imposing and noisy. She could trust the trees and bears and wolves, but the buildings, the sheer density of men and women scurrying around? The artificial woods weren’t comfortable for the girl. Though Ben wouldn’t have admitted it, it was good to have a home base to escape from it.
Wait…what was that smell?
It took her a minute but once she realized, the girl dropped the vacuum and ran to the small kitchenette, that was still messy from the dinner endeavor. ”The casserole!” Quickly, she grabbed the oven mitt, throwing the lid to the oven down and reaching inside to pull the blackened, smoking dish from the oven. She coughed as the smoky smell surrounded her face.
God damn she had completely forgot the bloody casserole!
@boa (( I wasn't sure what area he lived in so I just sorta guessed orz

'WHAT AN IMPOSING DAY,' THOUGHT he, the uni student with the bright red nest of hair atop his head. With two fingers to delicately rub at the bridge of his nose he would unlock the front door to the apartment block with his own key, a nod and a smile being tossed toward the old doorman reading his magazines. His feet carried him into the Victorian style elevator before he pushed the button of his floor and let his school problems finally slip away. He was home now and could relax at last, eat some dinner and perhaps work on that song he was doodling with. Take it easy for a few hours before homework would actually start, most likely around 2AM as he dosed up on caffeine of all different kinds.
When the little bell that announced his arrival rung into his ears Ted smiled warmly before his nose caught wind of the strong smell of... burning? Immediately a sigh passed his chapped lips as he stepped from the elevator, repeatedly wishing that the burning scent was not coming from his apartment. But alas as he closed in on his door and the burning only got stronger he begun to fear what would await him within the small living space. "She's fourteen," he whispered to himself in disbelief, shaking his head with a dumb-founded laugh, "how bad can it be?" The first thing Ted would see as he opened the door would be the abandoned vacuum, which was enough to bring a confused frown to his features as the door closed behind him and he stepped further in the home.
"Benny? You in here?" he called, stopping beside the vacuum and staring at it as if it were a foreign object to him. Moving on from that occurrence and Theodore would finally stumble across the kitchen, stopping at its entrance with a mixture of understanding and confusion on his face as a sigh left him once again. The mess! "So uh... cooking isn't quite my forte but," he begun, pointing toward the black mass that his room-mate would currently be pulling from the oven, "I don't think that's what it's supposed to look like."

"Benny? You in here?"
Shit! Ben quickly tried to wave the smoke away as she heard Theodore come in. It really did figure, the second things started getting out of hand just had to be right when he decided to come home.
She grimaced at the thing as he questioned the result. "It's not that, bad is it?" she asked, loudly so he could hear her over the fallen vacuum in response to his questioning. She experimentally slid a spatula into its center, as she asked. Maybe it was just a little...nope, her grimace deepened as she saw the charred entirety of the thing and coughed as another wave of smoke flew from the meal and into the air, this time succeeding in setting the rather touchy smoke detector into a screaming rampage.
Bennett merely sighed with a look of both exasperation and defeat etched on her face.

"NOT THAT BAD?" HE CHORTLED while taking a few tentative steps closer to the burnt meal that looked about to attack. "You're talking to a university student who's dined on week-old McDonalds, and even then this looks worse," he smiled, wrinkling his nose at the smoke rose again and set of the loud beeping of the alarm. 'Damn thing,' he thought as the school book he had been holding in his arms the whole time was waved in the air directly below the alarm so as to shut it off.
"Perhaps we should order take-out for tonight," he suggested, looking back at the young girl, "...and since I've only got one class tomorrow I'll have time to come home and show you how to work the timer on the oven, hah?" With a smile he ruffled Benny's hair before turning to the lounge once again, throwing his bag on the sofa while switching off the vacuum. "Unless you want to try eat that thing, play some fluffy bunny while trying not to break our teeth?" he teased, flopping onto the sofa after his bag and flinging his arms on the back support.

"ehhh, I've seen worse" Bennett scowled at the failed dish and placed it in the sink, letting water run and soak off the blackened meal as Theodore reached up to turn off the fire alarm.
"I know how the fuckin timer works" she grumbled, scrubbing at the pan as Theo rubbed her hair. "And I'll pay!" She wasn't about to be treated like some charity act and it was bad enough she couldn't afford rent.
With the easy bits broken loose, Bennett left the dish to soak, bubbly with suds as walked to grab the vacuum again. She wasn't done, after all. "So what do you want?" she asked as she continued to push it across the room.

"WHO SAID YOU WASN'T PAYING?" Ted joked, reaching into his pocket to pull out his phone in order to phone out. He glanced up at Benny as she walked to the vacuum and asked what he wanted, causing the boy to purse his lips in thought. "Chinese doesn't sound too bad, but pizza sounds better. What do you think?" he asked, raising a brow as he watched the rhythmic movements of the vacuum move back and forth on the carpet. Jeez those things were noisy.
