His alarm hadn't gone off on time, traffic was slow, and on the way out of his car he'd come this close to spilling his coffee. Nothing was going quite right this morning and he was eager to get to work if it was one thing that wouldn't go wrong.
He pushed the glass door open, handed off some papers to the first newbie he saw and listened as a coworker approached him and chattered about something he'd forget moments later. His blood turned to cement, rooted him unforgivably to the spot when he looked at a nearby desk. He wasn't sure what to think, but he kept staring at her while his coffee got hotter in his hand and the meaningless chatter didn't slow.

Her nails was a pure solid red today, not a tint, not a tone. There weren't long and elaborate either, that would make them unprofessional. It was really because it was supposed to be her 'first day on the job' anyway.
A day was long, she felt. But maybe it could be just the right amount of time.
Paper documents were held between her fingers, and she nods courtly at instruction, pushing up her glasses for extra emphasis. She's supposed to be a slightly air-headed, smart, newbie twenty-something. No doubt each was a lie, and she loved the way they sounded on her lips. Her hair framed her face nicely, and she eyed the entrance, and frowned a little - heading out behind the desk with her smart heels to walk towards Jobe's direction, only to converse with the man behind him.
She had offered him nothing but a casual, quick glance. Today she was Anna, the new recruit on the front desk, and Jobe Whitmore wasn't a man she'd ever known.
"You've forgotten to take your case documents today, Detective! How careless of you!" Her red lips curled into a smile. "You should be more careful."

She looked so different from her usual that Jobe had to do a double take, check himself to make sure that he wasn't too tired. But there was no mistaking it. It was was Marina, right there in his workplace, and he couldn't imagine just what would possess her to waltz in here.
but then she walked right past him, and he got a hint of her perfume, and he knew why. A frown settled on his features.
He turned and looked at her, momentarily forgetting that he was in a workplace. "Why are you here?" He asked, and then coughed. He felt obligated to not blow her cover, whatever it was, and he wasn't sure why. Or rather, he didn't want to think about why. "I don't think I've seen you here before."

She pressed her lips and dipped her head in pretense as the older man walked off, case documents in hand. In her heels, business attire, parted, long black hair, Marina stood, bemused by his attempt to keep his curiosity on a low down.
Marina shook her head slowly, a small smile emerging. "Oh, Sergeant Whitmore. I'll be keeping an eye on you as much as the other detectives and officers, that's my job." She tilted her head, but Marina never managed to make the action quite so innocent. "It's my first day here, so please be good to me." She responded in an almost sickly sweet kind of tone, before her fingers touched his, taking the steaming cup of coffee away from him.
"You're going to burn yourself, please take care."

She was teasing him. That was the only reasonable explanation that he could come to. He doubted that Marina would have stepped foot in a police station unless she was under some guise, and even then she looked so out of place here to him that he wondered why nobody else seemed to notice. She didn't belong in this setting.
But she was in his territory. She may not have been vulnerable, but he had that tactical advantage. "First day, huh." It didn't come out as a question, even though he'd meant it to. He scrutinized her getup, head to toe as she took away his coffee. She didn't seem unsettled in the slightest.
"What was your name again?" He asked. Hand hovering in midair as if he was still holding his coffee. He lay it down by his side and tried to keep a straight face. At the moment, it as barely all he could do.

She only returned with a smile; she was good at smiles. Surely within the corporate structure of the police, being good at smiling was an advantage. She handed his coffee back to him within the second, then bowed a little.
"Excuse me for my rudeness, Sergeant, without properly introducing myself. My name is Josephine, and I'll be assisting today. I've learnt about all the Sergeants just this morning, so please excuse me." Her eyelashes batted a little while she dipped her head down a little.
