It's a slow day at the store (though when isn't it, really) and Theia is sifting through a small pile of books at the counter. She's searching for a book that might prove good to practice her abilities with. It's a bad habit she started a few weeks ago during work, and she hasn't been able to stop. She's surprised that Aeron hasn't reprimanded her for the behavior yet, but he's always mulling in the back rooms, so she figures he isn't one to talk.
With a sigh she closes her current book, and loads up her arms with a few that she's already been through multiple times that day. She heads to the front where afternoon sunlight is like a spotlight though the windows and shelves them on a display case. It's hot and she can feel the back of neck starting to feel clammy, and she instinctively brushes her hair over her shoulder.

Kieran wasn't the studious, reading type. Nerds did that stuff. Kieran was interested in a fast-paced lifestyle, with fast cars and even faster women. It was the life he chose to lead and a life that brought him more happiness than it probably should. But what did it matter if he was happy?
It made no logical sense, then, that the redhead was walking into the bookstore. But if one knew his true intentions, it really would make complete sense why he was headed there. Those true intentions came to his line of sight the moment he opened the door, the bell above it tinkling to announce his arrival.
For the past few weeks, Kieran had been chatting up the brunette that worked at the shop. It started out innocently enough. He met her out on Main Street one afternoon and after a little conversation, she said she worked at said bookstore. Two days later, he stopped by to pay her another visit. And from then on, he'd stop in every once and a while to chat with her for a little bit. Kieran made sure to pull out all his charms — friendship wasn't what he was looking for.
Then again, a relationship wasn't either. While the idea of having a steady lover, a wife even, was somewhat of a fantasy, it wasn't in his sights right now. He was having too much fun fooling around and not caring about who ended up in his bed that night. But Theia had caught his interests.
"Good evening," he crooned, a slick drawl sliding off of his words. "Kinda quiet in here tonight, hm?"

Theia didn't look up as the bell above the door chimed. It was a general rule of hers to not bother customers unless they asked her or some special circumstance, mostly because that's what she would have wanted. She continued stacking until she heard a greeting and looked up, letting a small smile slip across her face. "Good evening." She greeted, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.
Kieran and her had met a couple weeks back and she'd grown to almost look forward to when he'd stop in and chat. She was aware that she didn't know much about him, but he seemed nice. Charming, at least.
"I like quiet." She said, pausing in her work and simply holding her books in her arms. "But it's always like this in the evenings." She went back to stacking them, suddenly taking a very intent interest in making sure that they were in the right order.

He watched with slight interest as Theia stacked her books. There were some interesting titles in the mix, but it wasn't like he was ever going to read them. Reading was boring and most of the time it just put him to sleep. It reminded him of being in school. But he wasn't going to say that to her, obviously, so he concentrated on reading the spines of each book.
"Does it ever get busy in here?" he asked, not abrasively but with genuine curiosity. "It always seems to be pretty calm around here whenever I stop or walk by."
Leaning back, he ran a hand through his hair, untangling some snarls as he looked around at all the books lining the walls and shelves. There were a lot of books out there. Had anyone ever read all of them before? Kieran supposed someone probably had, and that someone probably had no life.
Even though he didn't read and it wasn't his thing at all, he didn't know what else to talk about. And it was an easy subject to discuss, since books were surrounding them on literally every side.
"So, what's those books you're organizing there?" he asked, nodding towards the stack while taking a small step closer to her.

Theia shrugged. "Sometimes, but it depends. People come and go erratically." She gave him a sidelong glance and a small smile. "You just happen to visit when nobody's around."
She was almost anxious. She was reading too much into things; his posture, her tone. Had she been alone she would have taken a deep breath to calm herself down. "Um, just some that I was looking into." She'd gotten so used to keeping the truth about her powers by now, that the lie slipped out easily. A few more books went up on the shelf and she was very aware of how he'd stepped closer. "Unless you want to see them." It was an afterthought, an impulsive invitation.

"I guess I'm lucky, then," he smiled. "I like having you all to myself."
He was supposed to sound charming. It was all part of the plan. And Theia wasn't pushing him away, so he was going to get closer and closer until she did. If she did. In all their conversations that they'd had, she seemed like she genuinely liked to talk to Kieran. That was a good sign, he decided.
Taking a few more steps closer and leaning forward, he propped his elbows up against a short stack of books she hadn't started yet, resting his weight against the sturdy stack. Thankfully the stack was comprised of thick, wide books instead of flimsy paperbacks.
"Sure," he said to her inquiry. He wouldn't know anything about the books but it wouldn't hurt him to look, and he was a little interested. Pointing to a book that was in her hand as she was just about to put it away, he stopped her. "What's that one there?"

Theia wouldn't admit it out loud, but she liked it too.
"This one?" She held up the title for Kieran to see better. "It's a romance novel. Kinda cliche, actually." It was also a dystopian sci-fi, but she figured it was okay to leave that part out. The cover art made that part a little obvious.
She shifted so that she was holding all the books in one arm and stacking them with the other. It was a rhythmic task and, for the moment, managed to keep her head clear. She didn't offer it to him to buy, because he hadn't gotten any books when he'd stopped by. She was observant enough to know that that meant something.

Kieran looked up at the cover of the book. It seemed to be more of a young adult book, but he couldn't help but remember the stupid romance novels his mom would read. He remembered some of the covers, with buff, shirtless men and women clinging to them with titles about Highlanders and Ultimate Passion.
Once he was old enough to understand what kind of books they actually were, it was kind of disgusting, actually. His mom read those.
"Isn't all romance kind of cliche?" he asked in response, trying to sound intelligent and thought-provoking, but instead probably sounded kind of dumb. It didn't help that he put on a skeptical expression to go along with it, to try and cement the fact that he was trying to be philosophical.
"Well, I guess I don't really know anyways," he finally shrugged, dropping the act. "What about you, Theia? Ever been in love before?"

She didn't pause in her work, but she did shrug a tiny bit. Most of the ones she'd read were, but she'd veered away from the more graphic ones that she often saw older women buying. They weren't her style, and she'd stand any love triangle over those ones.
"Um," the question caught her off guard, made her pause and think. She could recall a few high school crushes, but never had she actually been in a long term relationship like most of her friends had had. She wasn't sure what it was like at all, and it was kind of embarrassing.
"Not in love." She admitted. "I don't think I'm old enough." She shrugged once more, stacked the last few that remained in her arms and double checked to make sure they were in the right order. While her eyes were averted from Kieran's she got up the courage to ask him, well, the same question. "And you?" It was almost in a teasing tone, but she wasn't quite that confident.

He smiled a little bit, looking at her as fondly as he could with his one eye. Sometimes it just looked like he was leering at people, but he couldn't really help that. Still, he tried to appear as warm as possible, and he hoped he was pulling it off.
"No, I haven't ever really been in love," he mused, looking away and off into the distance a little bit. That much was true. He'd been with plenty of women but he'd never actually been in love. Not that it really bothered him. Kieran knew he'd fall in love eventually, and right now he was just having fun.
Still, he looked back at Theia warmly, almost hopefully. "But you know, you can fall in love at any time, and you can never really see it coming."
Wise words coming from someone who'd never actually felt the emotion itself, but Kieran had his ways.

"Really." It didn't come out as a questioned like she'd hoped for it to. She laughed a little bit and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "You're certainly not wrong."
She looked back at him for just a beat too long before she averted her eyes and made her way back to the counter, where more sorted books reside. But she doesn't feel like stacking them, not now. When Kieran stepped into the shop her working mood flew out the window - not that she'd really been working in the first place.
"I should close up shop soon." She mused. "I wouldn't to keep you from, uh," She pasued to look back at Kieran. "What was it you were here for, again?"

He smirked a little grin at her when she seemed to be a bit...nervous? Coy? He couldn't really tell, but she certainly was cute. Catching her eyes before she averted them, his own eye twinkled a little mischievously.
She turned away to sort more books and he looked around again, not sure what to let his sights settle on. There was certainly a lot to look at around here, but his attention was focused on Theia, like a good conversationalist - even if there wasn't much conversation right at the second.
When she turned back to him and asked what he was doing, though, he just grinned a little and let out a sheepish laugh.
"This is gonna sound corny, but I just saw you in the window and wanted to stop by, just to talk to you," he said, voice warm. "But I mean, if you're getting ready to go, I can head out. Unless you wanna go with me? I can wait."

"I," Theia did a quick once-over of the store, struggling to not come off as too flustered, "Sure, yeah. I'll go with you." There didn't seem to be any customers left in the store, so she quickly checked that all the doors were locked and grabbed her bag from behind the counter.
"Shall we go?" She asked, nodding her head towards the front with a small smile on her face.

He grinned. This was easier than taking candy from a goddamn baby. Kieran would be a complete idiot if he didn't realize that Theia was showing all the signs of being attracted to him - something that he could definitely work with, given his goal.
The girl looked around the store one more time before grabbing her bag and motioning to the door. Kieran went over to her and looped his arm in hers gallantly before leading her out of the shop, allowing her a little arm-room to lock up the door before he continued on with her down the sidewalk.
"What should we do?" he asked. "Now that this is a proper date." He smirked - obviously joking - though it would be fun to see if Theia got very flustered. "There's all kinds of stuff to do around here. Or we could just head back to my apartment..."
