Theia had been in one of the crowded back rooms, sifting through some new books they had gotten in the last week. The novels were separated into different piles depending on whether they were used or new, and then how they were depending on their condition. It was a dull, monotonous task, but an easy one. It was quieter than helping customers, anyway. As the thought came to her mind, so did Aeron and she felt a need to go check on him. Just to see if he needed help with something—her job was close to being done.
Carefully maneuvering the boxes and high towers of books, Theia emerged from the room slightly dusty and a little bit wobbly. Upon regaining her composure, she set out to look for Aeron. The store was small, it wouldn't be hard to find him. If worse came to worse, she could just call his name.

It was one of those days already. He'd had a terrible night, and this time Marlene hadn't helped him stay asleep. He stood at the cash register while Theia was in the back stocking. In truth, he should be the one back stocking. With as irritable as he was, it wasn't a good idea for him to be up front. Theia was the assistant manager, and well... The only other employee at the moment. So he should be hiding in the back among the shelves. But for some stupid reason he decided to stay up front.
He sighed as a customer hastily made their way to the counter, rudely throwing their couple of books on the counter with a loud thud. She instantly began complaining about how poorly organized the store was, and Aeron simply bit his lip as he rang the books up. "24.52 is the total." he said. She narrowed her eyes and asked why they were so expensive, just for books. "24.52 isn't that expensive for two hardcovers." he replied, eyes starting to narrow.
How ridiculous she had said, I can get them cheaper across town, she said. She continued to bitch and moan as she fished around in her pocket book. She stopped mid sentence to change topic, once more complaining about the store's layout and how overly ridiculous it was. "I really really DON'T CARE." he finally snapped at her, his voice raising. The older woman looked downright offended, saying how dare he speak to her in such a tone. She demanded to see the manager and he just snorted at her. "I am the manager." he snarled.
He should be stocking books right now.

For as small as the store seemed to be, it sure was cluttered. Not so much as it was in the back, but enough to make it an effort to get from the back to the front. A raised tone reached her ears, and she simultaneously realised two things—it was Aeron’s, and he was angry.
She sped up the process to the front and turned a corner just in time to hear him snarl about being the manager to a woman who looked incredibly offended. She hurried to Aeron’s side behind the counter, putting on her best customer service side. "I’m sorry, is there a problem?" The woman proceeded to relay the previous five minutes in dramatic detail, most of which sounded exaggerated to Theia. But she waited, nodded her head understandingly.
"I’m very sorry—" In which the woman retorted that she certainly should be, "—but how about we give you a discount for all the trouble?" She sidled closer to the register, tapped a string of keys and re-rang the books. They were noticeably cheaper and the woman looked nearly satisfied. There was was a small box neglected gift cards under the counter that Theia could have offered, but after hearing the story from the woman’s side of things, she didn’t feel like the woman would have put it to use. She glanced sideways at Aeron, giving him just the tiniest hint of a look.

Aeron just stood quietly while Theia waltzed in. He didn't even bother correcting the woman anymore, as Theia wasn't bothered, as always. He just stood listening to the recount, which was, of course, more dramatic than what had actually happened.
He didn't really care.
The woman strode out the door, she was triumphant in her victory. Aeron turned to look down at Theia, "Don't give me that look." was all he said. It came out a little harsher than he had meant, but Theia had thick skin it seemed. It wasn't that Aeron didn't like her, he truly did, but sometimes she gave in too easily. He'd have rather had the woman storm out and buy nothing, it's not like the old man would know. (Or care, seeing as how Aeron was the manager after all).
"What a cunt." he sighed, rubbing his forehead. "You finish stocking?" he asked Theia, his voice finally returning to normal.

Once the woman was out the door and it dinged shut, Theia let out an exasperated sigh. Putting on a helpful face never really took much energy out of her, but it was still frustrating to deal with customers like that when all she wanted to do was get them out of the store.
She kept giving Aeron the same look and put one hand on the counter and the other on her hip. Never mind that it was difficult to look reprimanding when she was considerably shorter than him. She almost had to crane her neck."Actually, I was close to being finished when I thought to come and check on you." She was only thankful that she had gotten there before the situation had progressed to something worse. "You shouldn't snap at them like that, Aeron." She looked him in the eyes as if she was searching for something. "Is something wrong?"

He shouldn't do a lot of things. Shouldn't was the key word, however, because he had. "She was asking for it." he said, stating a clear fact. Don't be an ass, and most likely he wouldn't be one in return. But then, of course, there was always an exception to that rule somewhere. Always.
"I'm fine." he said. As fine as he was going to get at the moment, but he omitted that part. His coworker didn't need to know, and he didn't really care to tell her. Or anyone, for that matter. "Did you think I would fall asleep on the front end or something?" he asked, before making a jab at her. "Because unlike some employees I know, I don't fall asleep in the middle of the shelves."

Theia had a whole speech lined up for why the customer was always right, and fully intended to reprimand him with every word. Lucky for Aeron, she didn't get the chance.
She only scoffed just slightly. "I don't make a habit of it." She reasoned. "Besides, you're always lurking in the back and leaving me up here by myself." It wasn't meant to sound rude, but somehow it came out sounding like that regardless.
