I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL Main street was a perfect place for Peng to hang out on Monday afternoons. The train ride here was relatively short, it was extremely busy, and so Peng could grab himself a can of coke from a nearby hot dog stand, find a vacant bench, and sit for a couple hours. He'd surf aimlessly on his phone, look around, talk to strangers who sat down next to him, or occasionally take a job offer. It wasn't the usual hooded suspect who sat down and mumbled to him what they wanted him to do, how much they'd pay him when he was done, etc - it could be anyone. A teacher, a kid, a CEO, whoever. That's really what makes this job interesting.
Today was another typical perfect Nova day; the sun was out, but it wasn't too too hot. Nonetheless, Peng had chosen a bench in the shade of a few trees. It was a little more removed than some of the ones directly around the fountains and stores, and this way Peng could watch from a distance. He actually enjoyed people-watching quite a lot, especially here in east nova, where not everyone looked as sketchy or broke as they did in the south - at least in Peng's mind. He looked down at his phone briefly, checked the time, and then slipped it back into his hoodie pocket and continued drinking his coke.

It was an uncharacteristically lazy day for Kieran. He'd actually gotten a decent amount of sleep the night before, and woke up at a normal hour. Since he had nothing on the agenda today, like most days, he left his apartment around eleven to meander around. Sometimes it was nice just to take a relaxing walk around the island.
Before he got too far he stopped by a coffeeshop near his apartment building and ordered just a plain dark roast. It was sunny but it wasn't hot, and he needed a little pick me up right now. Even though he'd slept fine and gotten to sleep before, you know, 6 am, coffee still did wonders for his energy and mood. He didn't want to be too snappy if he ran into anyone he knew today.
And he usually did. There were a lot of people that Kieran had ended up meeting after moving to the island. It was surprising; he was imagining that he was going to become some kind of hermit or something...but this was nice. It was nice knowing people. He liked the company of others, even if he did end up spending most of his time alone.
The redhead's predictions came true as he walked down Main Street, sipping at his still-hot coffee gently. Sitting on a bench a little farther ahead in an enclave of trees was a guy he'd met a little while ago. They weren't even friends, probably, but Kieran was feeling sociable and he didn't have anything else to do, so why not?
"Hey," he called out as he got closer before approaching and sitting down on the bench next to him; not too close, but not so far away as to seem rude or standoffish. "Nice day, huh?"

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL Peng hadn't really expected to see anyone today (it was quite a rare day when he got a job), especially someone he knew. There weren't that many people in Nova that Peng knew, besides his family, of course. But when he heard a somewhat familiar voice call out to him, he assumed it was a job, and cast a rather cool sideways glance at whoever was approaching him.
His cold expression quickly opened up into one of surprise. He'd met Kieran before, and assumed the guy was just... well, maybe too cool to be hanging around the likes of a loner hacker like Peng. But if he'd learned anything from the couple years of living on Nova, it was to never expect anything from people. They would always find some way to surprise you, for good or for worse.
"Hi," Peng replied as soon as Kieran was sitting down. He turned to sit cross-legged, leaning against the arm rest of the bench. "It is nice. It's always sort of nice here," he added, and then racked his brain for something better to talk about. 'Know anyone who would pay me tons of money to hack into something?' didn't really seem like the best way to open up a conversation, but Peng wanted to talk. Having no real friends on the island yet meant that crappy small talk was actually something of a relief; it was a reminder that he was still something of a normal person. He could still play the silly teenager act.
"What have you been up to? It's been a while. I still haven't been able to find any sort of a good job," Peng lied, adding in an innocent laugh for good measure. Ha-ha, jobless teenagers. Hilarious.

Leaning back against the bench, Kieran sipped at his coffee comfortably now that it was at a more manageable temperature, and glanced over as Peng spoke. The small talk was just that — small talk, nothing of great magnitude or significance, but he didn't know Peng that well, really. They'd met a few times and had talked and apparently he was confident enough to sit down and converse with the guy, but Kieran wasn't exactly shy.
"Yeah, probably why it's so hot with tourists, huh?" he smirked. "And ex-pats like us. It's a good place to, uh, relax."
Kieran wasn't doing much relaxing, though. Relaxing days like this were actually a rarity right now. Thinking about that just made him turn too critical, though, so he ignored his brain in favor of listening to Peng again as he continued to drink from the cardboard cup in his hand.
"Oh, y'know. Living the life," he responded with a sarcastic smirk. "I don't do much besides drink and go out to the bars. I guess that's what having some expendable income does to you."
He knew his money would run out sooner or later, but that was gonna be far off. He just knew it. Nevermind the fact that a lot of his money was spent out at his trips to the bars and clubs, and that nasty little drug habit he couldn't seem to kick kind of whittled away at his savings as well.
"Really? I don't even know what you actually do, so I guess I can't be much help. Not that I would be, since I don't even have a job myself," he scoffed, even though the fact that losing his job was really his own fault.

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL Peng listened absently, staring somewhere past Kieran's nose as the man talked. Relax.
"Mmhmm," he agreed when Kieran mentioned relaxing. Peng was always looking out for more work. The most relaxing he did was video games and sleep. And well, sitting out here waiting for job offers could probably be considered relaxing, but mostly he was just tense. Anyone could be an offer. Anyone could also be undercover. It was scary trying to hide tracks that even Peng couldn't see.
"The bars?" Peng asked in surprise. He hadn't actually meant to sound surprised, but it was never an activity that appealed to him. Alcohol had never appealed to him. Well, he'd never particularly tried it either, he just always had the same image in his mind - namely a bunch of punk kids from his school that would drink illegally and then get in fights and hurt each other, occasionally sending someone to the hospital. That was Peng's association with alcohol, but now that he thought about it, it had to be different on Nova. The place was full of bars.
"I've never been," he finally said, a bit too fast, nearly interrupting Kieran after he mentioned not knowing what Peng does for a living, "to a bar. I've never had a drink." He wasn't sure why he was confessing this. The general consensus seemed to be that a twenty year-old never having drank any alcohol meant they were lame, so it was completely possible that Kieran might just laugh at him, but Peng couldn't have really minded. He glanced up at the guy with raised eyebrows and a bit of a pout, as if him never having anything alcoholic to drink was just a fact of life he would have to accept, like it couldn't change. I am lame.

He had been talking a bit when Peng suddenly interjected that he'd never been to a bar or that he'd never even had a drink. Kieran's eyebrows shot up, but he wasn't really judging him in any way. It was just surprising to meet someone who hadn't at least had one drink at a party or even at a family function. Even at church they offered alcohol, but then again, he didn't know the extent of Peng's religious background.
"Really?" he finally asked, smirking a little. "Sounds like something you should fix. I mean, unless you've got some reason why you don't drink..." Kieran supposed that was viable. People who were former alcoholics (which Peng obviously wasn't) or for a multitude of other reasons, some people just didn't drink. And that was okay. But life was a lot better when alcohol was involved.
"Well, if you want, we could go to one," he offered as his lips pulled into a conniving smirk. "I mean, I could show you my favorite places, since there's about a hundred bars to choose from on this island."
It was kind of ridiculous how many clubs and bars were in Nova Athenis. It wasn't that big of a place, and it was still chock full of drinking establishments. People just loved night life in this town, he supposed, but it was a pretty big tourist destination. Everyone wanted a chance to make some money off of stupid tourists. Could Kieran really judge, though? He himself could still be considered in the "stupid tourist" category.
"If you're up for it, I mean. I can stay out for a long time," he added, leaning back and drinking the last of his coffee before tossing the cup in a bin. "Years of experience."

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL "Go to one?" he asked, unable to really hide his surprise. A lack of friends meant a lack of invites out to the pub. He'd never had that, "Hey, let's grab a drink!" relationship with someone before. He'd never had much of a relationship with anyone before, besides his weird family, and the occasional people he had to stay very far away from. Needless to say, his customers weren't interested in grabbing a bite with him, and that was probably for the best.
There was a small part of Peng that craved for a normal acceptable life, and it cried out right now. This was the ultimate chance. Some cool dude was suggesting they grab a drink. That was normal, right? Could this be considered a step in the right direction? No, things will just go back to normal tomorrow. But there could be no harm in trying a drink. He silently hoped he wasn't a lightweight.
"Yeah," Peng finally said, rather fast. He looked back at Kieran as if he'd just woken up, out of the weird funk he had been in since the small talk started. It tended to do that to people. "You know, that would be cool, if you don't mind. I don't know anything about anything when it comes to alcohol." He paused again, watching Kieran toss his coffee cup away, and a small smile crept up on his face; a genuine one.
"Let's do it. Doesn't seem like there's anyone more qualified to show me that part of Nova."

Peng responded almost too quickly to his suggestion. Maybe the kid didn't get out much. Well, he obviously didn't, since he'd never even had a drink. Well, Kieran was more than willing to help a guy out, especially when it involved one of his favorite activities. The only problem was that it was a little bit early to go out for a drink, even if he didn't give a crap what time he drank.
"I wouldn't say I'm the most qualified," he said with a bit of a smirk. "But I do know my way around, that's for sure." He had been to a lot of the bars in town, after all.
Checking his watch, he made a little sigh. Well, they'd have to wait a while before they went out. The bars probably weren't even open yet, and if they were, they were the ones that had a restaurant and served for lunch as well as dinner.
"I'd love to take you, man, but none of the good places open till way later. How about we meet up in front of the Boarsneck Pub at around 7? That's a good, lowkey place to start." While he would usually go to one of the clubs downtown or on the south side of the island, he wasn't about to take Peng out for his first drink and have to worry about him getting something too strong or being roofied or something.
"So, whatcha say? Is it a date?" he asked sarcastically with a bit of a wink from his good eye.

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL Kieran was up for it. Peng wasn't sure why he was surprised; he had already offered, but a little part of Peng was always telling him the opposite of what he wished for. Now that he seemed to actually have a friend, he felt weird, but good. Sort of... new.
When the guy mentioned Boarsneck pub, Peng cocked his head to the side, trying to think of where he'd seen that before. He must have walked past it sometime.
"Is that in the east? Like here on main street, somewhere?" he asked, turning from Kieran to peer down the road. Around 7 was perfect, since that way Peng could go home, put on something a little nicer than jeans and a hoodie, and get a job or two done if anything came up. But he had to know where it was first.
Getting up off the bench, Peng bent his legs a few times and stretched his arms up. Sitting cross-legged was never comfortable for long. "You know, I can google it if you don't know the address, so don't worry about it." Peng didn't know his way around at all. If Kieran gave him any landmarks to help him find his way there, they'd probably not be familiar anyway. When the guy winked, Peng laughed a little nervously, but nodded.
"So, yeah. Boarsneck Pub at seven."

"Yeah, it's—okay," he shrugged when Peng said he'd Google the address. Kieran wasn't the best at giving directions anyway and he didn't want the other to get lost or something. Even though the east was relatively safe, it was easy enough to wander into the wrong neighborhood.
The two parted ways shortly after that, and Kieran headed home to clean up a little bit. While the Boarsneck was where they were starting, it definitely wasn't where they were ending. And the better the bars got, the better looking the women were, and he couldn't show up looking like a hot mess, after all. Then again, when wasn't he a hot mess?
He got home and got lazy, though, and ended up lounging for a bit, taking a pill to pass the time. So maybe he'd be a little more excitable when 7 rolled around, but it's not like the drug would be in full effect when they hit the bars. He wouldn't be completely messed up, at least not at first.
Finally he got the motivation to get dressed, and the pill helped. Spritzing on some fresh cologne he made his way down and out of the apartment at 6:50. He'd get to the pub just in time. The sun was getting lower in the sky and cast an orange glow across the island, and it was comfortable. Stuffing his hands in his pockets he walked on, getting to the pub just on time.
"I maybe even have some time to spare," he mumbled aloud, leaning against the building and pulling a cigarette out of his pocket, perching it between his lips and lighting it. If it wasn't one vice, it was another.

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL Peng was behind schedule, and after him and Kieran parted, he went home in a hurry, hopping online to finish one of the jobs that had been stacking up. It was relatively easy, but still a bit of a pain in the ass - the guy he was working for was extremely picky with how the job would be executed, despite Peng assuring him he was an expert. He'd had to go out again to east nova to meet the man and collect his pay, loitering around the outdoor markets, pretending to look at t-shirts. He ended up buying himself a short-sleeved button up shirt, a black one with a collar that made him look sort of important and fancy, figuring it would be good for the bar scene.
With several hundred dollars sitting in his wallet in his back pocket, Peng headed to the bar, walking fast down the sidewalk, finally arriving at about quarter past. He'd just gotten paid, so that would be the money that went towards his drinks, and probably some food, since he was very hungry. He spotted Kieran right away, smoking a cigarette outside the bar.
"Hey," he greeted him. "Hope you weren't waiting long."

When the clock read 7, Peng was still nowhere to be found. Kieran glanced around, trying to see if he was hiding anywhere, but he didn't see the man in the vicinity. So he was late. The redhead didn't mind much; it's not like they had a strict schedule to follow or anything. And besides, it gave him a little more time to enjoy his cigarette in peace.
Finally the kid (even though Kieran wasn't terribly older) walked up, and Kieran snuffed his cigarette out on the brick wall behind him. There was smoking in the bar of course, but he'd almost finished the cig he was working on and would rather start a fresh one once he was in there.
"Well, I've been waiting just as long as you've been late," he smirked. "It's no big deal. C'mon, lets go inside."
Turning he walked inside of the bar, holding the door open for Peng behind him as he walked into the dimly-lit smoky pub. There weren't too many people about, at least not yet, so it wasn't too crazy. Not really Kieran's scene, of course, but hey. Everyone had to start somewhere.
Heading to the bar counter he hopped up onto a stool and pulled out a fresh cigarette, sticking it between his lips loosely as he fished out his lighter to ignite the end. Glancing over at Peng, he took a long drag on the cigarette before pulling it away from his lips, tapping whatever ash was in a nearby glass ash tray.
"So, do you have any idea of what you like? Beer, hard liquor? They'd probably make you a mixed drink but they might laugh at you," he explained with a wink and a slight laugh.

I'D RATHER DIE, THAN GIVE YOU CONTROL He nodded in reply, lips tight as he quietly followed Kieran into the Boarsneck pub. It was smokey, hard to see... those, Peng had expected, but for some reason part of him had been looking out for men in cowboy hats or fat cats in suits smoking cigars around a table. It was just a bunch of regular people, of course. He was embarrassed of his own expectations.
He sat himself down on a stool next to Kieran and studied the bar for a bit, gaze landing briefly on the bartender nearby who greeted the two men with a quick and curt nod before filling a pint of beer for a different customer. Peng looked back to Kieran, grinning as he mentioned mixed drinks. Those must have been the girly ones with umbrellas and various liquors; usually sweet, but not a guy's drink. Still, Peng had no clue. Maybe those were what he liked.
"Eh... beer sounds fine," he replied, feeling a tad uncomfortable. He always knew what he was doing, always knew his way around. This was the first time in a while that he'd felt out of place. It was strange having to rely on someone to show him the ropes. "Like, a light one, I guess?" He'd heard that somewhere before. A light beer as opposed to a dark one. It sounded less intimidating.

Kieran ordered up the beers after Peng told him what he wanted, and in just a few moments the icy cold pints were sliding towards them, a light for Peng and an amber ale for Kieran. Taking a steady drink, he reminisced for a moment back to his high school days when he'd spend his weekends in someone's garage, sitting around drinking Heineken and acting like stupid teenagers. Sometimes he missed the simplicity of those times.
"So, how is it?" he asked over at the other, smirking. Beer kind of had a distinct taste and was hard to get used to, but then again, everyone had different preferences. He took another drink, the cool beer sliding down his throat with ease. Hopefully Peng wasn't having too much of a hard time with it.
