| seven devils all around you | Bree was poor. Broke. A pauper. Penniless. Well, maybe not completely penniless, but Killian only left so much spare change around his house. She couldn't live off of the quarters he left hanging around, and she was beginning to suspect that he was catching on to her tendency to pick his pockets whenever she got the opportunity, which was a bit of a bummer.
Still. Money. She needed it now. There had been almost none in Killian's house this morning, so she had resorted to alternate methods of gaining cash.
No, she hadn't gotten a job. God forbid she take the logical route.
"Orphan tears!" Bree called out, waving the pink glass vial she had found by the roadside around in the air as she walked down the sidewalk. In reality, it contained ocean water and not orphan tears (unfortunately, she hadn't been able to find an orphan on such short notice). "Orphan tears for sale! Get 'em while they're fresh! What a fabulous addition they'll make to any recipe of your choice!" Surprisingly, no one had stopped her to buy them yet, but it was just a matter of time.
Bree was in the midst of wiggling her eyebrows at a particularly disturbed looking potential customer when she barreled right into someone. The collision nearly caused her to fall back on her rump, but she caught herself just in time. "Sorry 'bout that, sir or madame," she said, not sounding particularly sorry, before waving the vial in the stranger's face. "Orphan tears?"

Being a detective required plenty of skills. Sharp perception, a keen eye, a quick mind, a good sense of strategy and logic. Sofia, naturally, possessed all of these things.
It was writing and walking at the same time that got her. She was scribbling furiously - better to write down everything important of note right when she thought of it than forget later - when she bumped into somebody else.
Her pen fell from her hand, and so did her notebook, and the first thing she did was bend over to scoop it up, dusting off the cover tenderly and clutching it to her chest. Sofia wasn't pleased by the girl, who was already pitching her --
"Orphan tears?" Sofia repeated haughtily. "How did you get orphan tears, pray tell?" Sure, this was a bit of a sidetrack from the island's big mysteries, but everybody needed justice. Even crying orphans.

| seven devils all around you | The tone this girl spoke with was proud, disdainful even, but Bree didn't care. By asking her about the orphan tears, this girl, with her notebook and pen, was giving Bree the opportunity to do what she loved to do best; lie.
How had she gotten her mitts on orphan tears? Now here was a fantastic story waiting to happen. It was so lovely of this stranger to give Bree the chance to tell it.
"Well, ma'am, it's quite a tale." She began. She was going to enjoy inventing this one on the spot. "Basically, I had broken into an orphanage- I do that sometimes, it's a hobby- when suddenly, outta nowhere, I smell smoke! Turns out, a fire had started. And all those little orphans' eyes were stinging from the smoke, so I told 'em to cry their wee hearts out, and they did! I don't think all of 'em survived the fire, but hey! I managed to bottle some of their tears, so it's a win for me. Orphan tears are great for magic potions. Highly recommended by me."
Deciding to add a little criminal touch to her story, Bree looked furtively to her side, before leaning closer to the girl to whisper, "Personally, I suspect arson. But hey!" She reverted back to her normal, louder voice and leaned back to beam at the female opposite to her. "We talkin' business or what?"
Who wanted the truth when they could have a good story?

Sofia raised a brow as she surveyed the girl, and as she began to speak, slowly flipped open the notebook to a clean page and noted a few things down. She glanced back up just as the other girl had leaned in to whisper, and then looked back over her notes before shutting the notebook curtly.
This was a case worth investigating if she'd ever heard of it - what kind of monster would set fire to an orphanage. "Breaking and entering is a crime, you know." She said. "But I may keep your witness anonymous if you make yourself of help." Sofia narrowed her eyes and tilted her head, as if trying to decide if this girl's witness was trustworthy. For now, at least, it was all she had to go off of.

| seven devils all around you | Hastily, Bree shoved the vial in her pocket before flinging her hands up to cup either side of her face as her eyes widened in faux-shock. "WHAT?! Breaking and entering is illegal?!" She shrieked at an ear-splitting volume. "Unbelievable! Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that murder's been outlawed too!"
Bree knew these were the types of statements likely to shock the other girl. She struck Bree as the law-abiding type, the kind who never toed the line. What a boring life she must lead.
Shaking her head as though the world had gone mad, Bree lowered her hands back down to her sides. "Oh, I love being anonymous!" She remarked. "What kinda help we talkin' about here? If you need me to stab someone, I'm so there for you."

Sofia's eyes darted to the vial, making note of the pocket it had been tucked into to, before she met the girl's wide eyes. "That is all illegal." She stated flatly. This girl was a troublemaker, but Sofia was not exactly on good terms with the law either.
But at least she had her own set of standards. She crossed her arms and looked suitably horrified. "No!" Sofia said, firmly. "No stabbing, no violence." Her nose wrinkled in distaste at the very word - her battles were ones of intellect. "Just investigating."

So all of that stuff was illegal, huh? She had kind of been hoping that certain of the spoilsport laws they had back in Ireland weren't in effect here, but apparently not. Well, bugger. Still, pesky laws hadn't ever stopped her from doing the things she enjoyed doing before.
"But I like violence!" Bree whined, making sure to do it in the most obnoxious way possible. "C'mon, don't be a stick in the mud. What if a gang of orphan kids attack us? Are we allowed to beat 'em off with sticks, at least? Because, I'm just saying, an investigation without any beat downs seems kinda like a lame one to me. And I know all about lame investigations, believe you me. I watch CSI."
Proudly, she folded her arms and looked expectantly at the other. How could she fail to be impressed by Bree's obvious expertise in this area?
