winter was a season that emery found he didn't quite mind at all. it was quiet, always so quiet; most insects had died off or were in a comatose state, the birds had fled for warmer climates, and humans themselves took care not to leave their toasty little caves. it was perfect. well, except for the part where he had to remember to wear shoes. he didn't think frostbite on his toes would be very enjoyable at all. the point was, the freezing weather gave the pale blonde a chance to try out the new refracting scope his parents, bless their hearts, got him for christmas, in peace. it wasn't even computerized like many of the modern day models, since his parents knew that their boy was a bit of a technophobe. it wasn't like he didn't know how to use them, per say. it was just that it was much easier for him not to work at pushing all the little buttons and painstakingly enter codes, just to see altair or ursa major. he couldn't help that he was stupid.
his thin boots sunk into the heavy snow which each step, sending a shiver through his spine at the lingering cold feeling. alright, so maybe winter wasn't that fantastic, but maybe it would at least force most of the campers away from his favorite clearing. with that thought in mind, the tall figure continued on, the thick scope slung across his shoulder and a thick blanket tucked into his elbow to warm him during the long hours of watching the night sky. one of the reasons he had stayed so long nova, rather than leaving for college in other countries like many others, was because of the constantly clear views. somehow, the lights from the city just wasn't able to ruin the spectacle.
his breathe was coming in short and quick by the time he reached his destination (he had never been athletic, not even when he was a child), but he quickly brightened at the sight that beheld him. the clearing had quite a few inches of snow, yes, but it was completely devoid of life. not even the annoying family of owls that plagued the large tree near the edge of the area were present. he assumed they must've decided to join their brethren in hawaii for vacation. his eyes practically sparkled with excitement at the prospect of getting a good viewing in the quiet, and the man quickly began to set up, as if he expected the birds would return lest he beat them to it.
for several minutes, all he heard was the clinking of metal and twisting of gears as the bits and pieces were stuck together and perfected into their true shape, a pale steel telescope on a rather delicate, teetering stand. while the scope itself was new, the stand was recycled from one of his older models. as frail as it looked, it hadn't failed him yet, and he quite hoped that it wouldn't decide to now that it held a more expensive object upon its legs. he didn't know what would happen if it got water inside of it, but he didn't particularly want to find out.
quite satisfied with his work, emery drew a scratchy, bulky blanket around his shoulders, and waited for the moon.
