@nao1 ● | It was a strange afternoon, where the remnants of a crisp dewy morning remained on both the grass and the bench in which Valentin sat. It was nice to just occasionally go out of your way, try something different from the usual monotony of a working life, and he could certainly appreciate the fresh scent in the park. Of the muddy fragrance of nature after rain has passed. It’d been years since the last time, he must have walked along the same stone paths with his mother at some point. Looking over the gardens he bit into his slightly squished cheese sandwich, breaking off a portion for the tiny gerbil curled up in the scarf. They both sat side by side, eating in complete synchrony with puffed cheeks and a look of calm content in their eyes. Both turned their heads simultaneously as a shrill squeak fired from their right; a pair of pleading eyes met Valentin’s gaze followed by another panicking mew; ‘Please help me!’ A plump tortoiseshell lay on a high branch of a nearby tree, clawing into the bark for dear life with increasing terror. Valentin flew off the bench, carefully placing his sandwich down on top of the plastic bag– as his master was distracted the gerbil immediately helped himself. Without hesitation Valentin made use of a ladder propped against the maintenance shed he had noticed earlier, quickly bracing it against the side of the trunk as his gerbil watched from the bench, flatly, more interested in its piece of crust. Don’t worry, remain where you are, I shall save you. Up the ladder his voice remained calm yet bold as he was almost in reach of his feline friend. |
