Everybody knew Sofia around the office. She didn't work there, but most of the detectives knew her by name, if not as Ashton's little(?) sister. Nobody stopped her as she trudged past the main room and turned down the hall to the office marked with a plaque for 'A. HOLMES'.
She didn't mind that she wasn't an 'official' investigator. Most of her brother's work was following around cheating spouses, boring stuff. Sofia was more interested in solving real mysteries.
And boy did she have a lead. She practically kicked open the door, an utterly solemn expression on her face, though her eyes glistened excitedly, hands gripping her worn notebook.

| Ash had been entering data into his case files when his door swung open with a noisy clatter. “What do you want Sofia?” He didn’t even bother looking up from the glowing computer screen. Who else would burst into his office in that manner? Only Sofia. She must have had some ridiculous reason for coming to see him while he was clearly busy. Whatever it was, he sure it probably was something that could have waited until he got home. “I’m busy right now.”
Even though he was hardly impressed by the work he had been doing since coming to Nova Athenis, he preferred not to follow along with her imaginary mysteries. Everything was a super important mystery to his sister. She could find important clues in even a cereal box. He humored her when she was a child, but she was an adult now. Sofia needed a reality check. Coming to live on the island was a mistake. Everyone was weird and encouraged her antics. |

She crossed the tiny office in a few big steps - Ashton didn't give any proper greeting, but she didn't mind. That was just the way it was. If she didn't know any better she'd think that it was dramatic, that he really was up to something important, but she knew that it was hardly the case. His work wasn't important, not like hers was.
"Are not. I've been busy." She plopped down in the seat across the desk, slamming her notebook down between them and flipping quickly through pages. There was no order in the notebook, but she managed to find the page she liked, jabbing a gloved finger at the chart, scribbled in pink pen.
"There's this guy - hey, are you listening?" She reached out with her other hand to slap at Ashton lightly, to make sure she had his attention. "There's this guy, he goes to this cafe on main street - every weekday. At 12:30 in the afternoon, he's only been off time once this week and twice the week before. He always orders a milkshake, but different flavours. It's almost always chocolate, strawberry, vanilla bean, oreo, except sometimes he doubles up the vanilla bean or gets a mocha. He orders a pastry with it, but the only observable pattern I found was that he always gets key lime pie on Tuesdays, and that he gets strawberry tart at least every other week." She had been moving her finger along the page, following some sort of diagram or chart and when she was finished, she pushed the book towards him and looked up to Ash with bright, expectant eyes.

They both knew his work wasn’t important as he’d have liked it to be. Whatever she had barged in about, however, wasn’t worth the interruption either way. He didn’t even need to hear it to know it was something absurd. It could have waited until he got home. She was in his office nonetheless. Ash couldn’t very well concentrate on his previous task and listen to her at the same time so he paused to actually meet her eyes. “Fine, you have my attention.”
He took in her detailed explanation, showing she had exceptional perception and dedication yet it was clear that it was entirely misplaced as she went on. So far, she sounded more like a stalker than a detective. “And? …Is that it? You came to tell me that you’ve taken to stalking people now? What was the purpose of obverting a random man, a frequenter of a local café?” He dropped his face into his hand, running it down his face. “You’re beginning to worry me, Sofia.”

Whether she had his attention or not, Sofia had gone on talking. Her explanation finished, a silence stretched out for a moment. He was probably taken aback by this, her brilliance, angry that he hadn't realized sooner that --
Her face fell into a frown, his response underwhelming to say the lease. He didn't seem to understand the importance - he hadn't so much as glanced at the chart she'd drawn out, and as always, seemed quick to dismiss anything she had to say. Sure Sofia was younger and not an actual detective like he was, but that didn't mean she was wrong. That just meant she focused on what she knew to be important and just, not on whatever she was paid for. She crossed her arms across her chest.
"It's obviously a sign." She insisted, pulling her notebook back towards herself, shutting it huffily and resting it on her lap.
"It's sweet that you're worried about me, but don't! I can take care of myself, and - no offense - you probably couldn't protect me anyways. I mean I'll keep you updated on where I'm going so if I do disappear, like if you don't hear back for me, then I guess call the cops. If I'm not already..." Her expression twisted into a grimace, and she made a cutting motion across her neck with a finger.

If she would only direct her attention to something sensible then he wouldn’t have to worry so much about his little sister. However, she was set on her make-believe mysteries. Ash just didn’t know what to do with her anymore. It couldn’t be healthy to stalk people around and keep detailed accounts of their lives in a journal for no real reason. Maybe he was missing something important. He doubted it. “So enlighten me. What is this obvious sign?”
He rolled his eyes, hiding it behind the hand pressed over his forehead. He didn’t doubt that she was likely to get into some kind of real danger with the way she was doing things. Just following random people and monitoring their daily lives was bound to land her in the hands of a real criminal. There wasn’t much he could do for her then. “Don’t do anything too stupid. Our parents will kill me if anything happens to you.” He signed. “So go on, tell me what I’m not seeing.”

She drummed her fingers on the cover of her notebook. Now it was Sofia's turn to roll her eyes - and he called himself a detective. She was the real sleuth in the family, and Ashton was obviously bitter about the fact.
"It's obviously a sign." Flipping open the notebook as she spoke, she pushed the chart in front of his face. "He's the first part of things - there must be another person, obviously there at the same time every day, who takes note of the combination. They're relaying information." She gave a decisive nod. "It's just a matter of finding the other player - and the nature of the game."

She rudely shoved her scribbled on notebook way to close to his face as she spoke on about her imagined discoveries. His sister seemed so smug about her supposed discovery when he knew she was just looking for anything to make a case over. The younger Holmes sibling just had too active am imagination. Ash really hoped she would grow up soon and cease all these fantasies. “I see.” He mumbled at last, pushing the pad from his face.
He laced his fingers together, perching his elbows on the paper strewn desk top. The point of his chin rested carefully on his knuckles. “And you’ve yet to find this second player, have you?” He had a bad habit of humoring her. Ash was doing it even now. Maybe it was just to get her out of his hair. “And your evidence? Pure observation will not get you far. You need pictures and recordings, hard evidence to prove your case, sister dearest.”

Sofia watched him closely, examining her notes, to see if everything checked out - which of course, they did. She took her notebook back and leaned in as he did, though her posture was straight and unsupported.
"I know that." She responded. Just because Ash was licensed didn't mean he was any better a detective than she was - her experience counted for much more than did his education, she was sure. "That's why I'm here. I need to use your camera. The one with the zoom." It wasn't a question or even a demand as much as a statement, an offhanded notification that she would be using his things.

“No.” He replied decisively. He knew she hadn’t intended to ask. Sofia was telling him she was going to take his expensive camera and gallivant around town, using it to stalk the unfortunate citizens of the island they called home. “You are not taking my camera. Buy your own.”
He hadn’t spent a fortune on a camera for her to take it. It was for his job. “Or use your phone. Either way, I’m not letting you near my camera.”

Sofia huffed, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She wasn't a child, though Ashton liked to treat her like one. She couldn't afford a camera, she was only asking a small favour for a very important cause.
"Why not, what do you need it for?" She challenged, pressing her hands against the desk and leaning in. "Look, I have important things to do, Ashton." Sofia told him haughtily, pushing herself to her feet and circling the desk. Where did he keep the thing?

It would be a cold day in hell before he let his little sister take his camera to go stalk people at the local cafes. Heck, he wouldn’t let her take it for any reason. Didn’t she know how expensive it was? Knowing her, she’d probably get into trouble and it would get ruined in the process. “Because I said no, Sofia. Now stop acting like a spoiled child.”
What nerve his sister had. He couldn’t believe how entitled she acted. Her little detective game was more important than his job? That was funny, so funny he forgot to laugh. “You aren’t touching my expensive camera and that’s final.”

"You aren't the boss of me, Ashton." Her lip curled. He always did this, treated her as if she was a child. Sofia was an adult every bit as much as he was, and she had her own business that was just as, if not more important than his. He just refused to acknowledge it.
She came around the desk, glancing at his computer screen and rolling her eyes and bending over to pull open the nearest drawer. He would understand how important this was, once she got her evidence.

He had once indulged her. That was likely the cause of her impudence. How could he have known how out of control her imagination would get? It was time for him to put his foot down before she wound up in trouble.
"Sofia, that is enough. If you want to be treated like an adult then act like one." He snapped, losing patience with her. "I have work to do, work that provides the roof you live under, the clothes you were and the food you eat. As much as I would like to work on real mysteries, this job pays the bills."
