The pros of a predominantly black wardrobe - she could shove as much of her clothes as could fit into the washer, slide her change into the slots, and hope for the best.
Laundry day was long overdue - Mathilde wore a shirt several sizes too small, figure hugging and midriff-bearing. She didn't have a body to be ashamed of, but gas station prostitute wasn't quite the look she usually went for.
With nothing to see in the laundromat but outdated magazines and the spin of clothes washing, she decided on a cup of coffee while she waited. There was a little cafe nearby; their coffee was bitter and grainy, she noted as she stepped back into into the morning sunlight with a cup in hand.
She squinted against the light, wishing she'd thought to wear sunglasses.

Mornings. That one time Amelie wished she'd actually like coffee, but instead was stuck with soda and very sugary foods to jumpstart her system. Instead of that, today she decided on trying coffee again.
With the sun in her eyes, she'd turned wrong on a street while heading towards the cafe where she worked, only realizing her mistake once she was blocks away. Lazy, Amelie decided she'd just head towards the nearest cafe and try that coffee.
Seeing a hanging sign on the corner of a building advertising a cafe, she crossed the street and went over. Right in front of the door, of course, the girl tripped on nothing, falling to the ground at some feet. Looking up, Amelie saw it was a young woman. "Uh, hi?" she said, slightly apologetically.

"Watch it!" Mathilde had meant to shoulder past the woman, who was coming in as she came out. Instead, the other woman stumbled and Mathilde yelped and stepped back out of her way, coffee sloshing from her cup and onto her hand. "Fucks sake." She muttered darkly, wishing she'd thought to grab a napkin or two.
Her gaze burned into the fallen woman. "You mean, sorry, right?"

Her knees burned from the fall. The sidewalk hurt, that was for sure. The woman whose gaze she'd met was giving her a nasty look, like people tripping was a foul and evil crime. And of course, the black-haired woman asked for an apology like a school bully asked for something.
"Sorry, I guess," Amelie said, getting up, and brushing herself off. There was a lot of dust here - maybe the sidewalks in this neighborhood were dirtier, or her jeans were just dirty. "I hope your coffee didn't spill," she said to the woman, concerned about the temperature of the coffee burning her if it spilt.

Every word out of this woman's mouth was setting Mathilde further and further on the edge - I guess? I hope?
She raised herself to her full height, and Mathilde gave her a cursory glance over, though she'd already made up her mind that she didn't like this pink haired little bitch at all. "It did." She said flatly, squaring her posture in a subtle movement, staring down Amelie expectantly.

Mathilde was nasty in every way, shape, and form, she Amelie decided. Glaring down at her, as she was a bit taller, or using that nasty "I don't like you" tone of voice. Although it could be justified that Amelie was the one who tripped onto the other woman, it didn't make her feel much better about her.
After finding out the coffee did spill, she fumbled through her purse, looking for he tissues. Finally pulling the pouch of tissues out, she grabbed a couple, handing the taller woman them with a "Here. Clean up your hand."

At least she had the decency to dig a few tissues out for her. Mathilde took them from her without a word, dabbing at her hand – which would still be sticky – and wrapping the tissues around the paper cup carefully before he gaze flickered back to Amelie. "Thank you." She says dryly.
She doesn't like the imperative way she's being spoken to, so she adds. "Watch where you trip." Mathilde glances behind her, at the ground that's clear of anything. She doesn't mention it, but she makes a point to really look the ground over, and she raises a brow in disbelief.

Amazing. The woman had been a tiny bit nice and said thanks, after saying rather rude stuff. "You're welcome, I always keep some handy for times like these," she said with a bit of a smile.
Of course, her little moment of niceness was gone as soon as she told Amelie to watch before she tripped, making her unhappy. True, she could wear shoes that weren't as comfy but stayed on better and put her hair up more to keep her trip rate lower, but it wasn't that bjg of a deal. "I'll try, thanks," she said with a tone that said 'I don't like what you said'.

Mathilde smiled back, but it wasn't anything genuine - as always, even her curled lips seemed to drip sarcasm. She titled her head and looked down at the girl, like she would a child, in a condescending praise of a nod.
Like she expected Mathilde to forgive her - it wasn't that she'd tripped so much as she was an idiot. A fucking idiot who couldn't walk down a smooth sidewalk without fucking up a stranger's day.
"You must have a lot of accidents." She said offhandedly.

Amelie hadn't been so pissed at a person who wasn't an artist forever. Maybe it was the way she was being talked to, like she was an imbecile, or maybe the glares and tone of voice. Whatever it was with this woman, she planned subtle revenge on this woman. Tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, she began to examine the taller woman.
A slight, sarcastic smile had appeared on the woman's face. Of course. She was being passive aggressive, trying to act all nice but with completely rude intentions, like Amelie was an imbecile. Then another little remark, saying of course she must fall over a lot.
"Yeah, I guess I do trip on about anything. How about you? Have you tripped on completely smooth sidewalks before?" she said, putting on an innocent face.

Mathilde was ready to just step past the girl, sick of looking at her smiling face and cotton candy hair, and she was a little surprised when the woman kept talking.
Normally she would have gone on her way, but she was still waiting on her clothes. She literally had nothing better to do. Mathilde rolled her eyes, took a sip of the shitty coffee. "No. I haven't." What kind of question was that?

Being passive aggressive wasn't any fun, Amelie decided. It didn't the woman unhappy it seemed, or get much a of a reaction. Deciding she needed a time check, she pulled out her phone from her purse with much work.
Pressing the power button to bring it out of sleep mode, a quick glance told her it was time to get coffee if she wanted some and get to class on time. "Gotta run to get my coffee, nice meeting you!" Amelie said cheerfully, briskly walking towards the cafe.
