She brought her glass up to the dim light, swirling the glistening liquid with a sly smile. Marina rarely ventured outside for recreational purposes, but then again all work and no play made women grow rusty.
She moved a long curl of hair backwards, and surveyed the array of alcohol behind the counter and the too-young-to-know-her-tastes youth darting nervous looks around the frittering customer base.
She took a delicate sip of her glass, in such an annoying and fruitless way, more attention was drawn to her presence, especially the young bartender, crossing his eyebrows and twitching his thumbs.

It wasn’t his ideal place for a drink, but Jobe had been patrolling around the area enough recently to stand a bit more grime on his shoes.
His cigarette left a trail as he made his way to the bar, sliding onto a stool and curtly ordering a drink. He paid no mind to the other patrons; his day at work had been restless, and the man figured that he deserved a break before going home and taking a long hot shower.
What gave it away was the perfume. It wasn’t an instant, could-smell-from-a-mile-away kind of recognition. No, it was a delayed moment. Half of him hoped it wasn’t her. But the world wouldn’t be so nice as to give him that luxury, not tonight, it seemed.
He glanced to Marina’s face before tapping his cigarette on a bowl, some feeble attempt at subtlety. It was pathetic, really. Not one word had been spoken and already he was jittery. CODED BY DUCKIE OF GS

Marina smiled grimly. Her eyes fluttered shut, her grin now wider then before, blood red lips stretching.
Of course she noticed him. The bartender did too, because he fluttered over to the new customer like a trained dog. With a twist of her hand, she swirled her glass once more, and turned to face Jobe with a tilt of her head and another smile for goodwill.
She flicked her glass to his direction, before drinking it with her hand covering most of the rim.
"Sit by me, Jobe." She said, after putting her glass down with a thump on the counter. "Or are you scared? Spare me some goodwill ahead of the winter, would you?"

The bartender quickly set down a glass in front of Jobe, and he took a long drink before setting it down and muttering, ”Goodwill, huh?”
Somehow, he felt trapped. Not quite like a cage; more like a one-way street and he couldn’t go back the way he came. Her voice was damning, and as long as he was going to hell, he might as well speed up the process.
He got up and settled himself on the stool next to her, sliding his drink along with him. ”Trust me, Marina, the last thing I am is scared.” It wasn’t quite a lie. Jobe was good at keeping his cool, on the surface, at the very least. But he wasn’t stupid. She would never fall for it, and that alone made him ever more anxious. CODED BY DUCKIE OF GS

She turned her body to face him, elbow on the counter and hand supporting her chin, as she began to watch his every move. Marina blinked slowly, as if taking him all in; the matured lines of his face, his neatly kept snow white hair, the dull shine of his red eyes. Her smile, as if it was possible, widened, red lips seemingly glowing under the dim light.
"Is that so?" She chuckled, red lips dancing close to her lips. "Your trust sounds so good."
She leaned in smoothly, eyes drawn to his.

There was a time—a very, very brief time in his life—where Jobe would might have been able to meet Marina's eyes almost unflinchingly. Not quite her equal by any means, but naive enough to be able to withstand her unrelenting gaze. But it's been years, and the man is out of practice. He isn't quite sure what to do. Had he been a young boy, he would have visibly squirmed.
"So, what brings you here, Marina?" Jobe asked, crushing his cigarette on a nearby ashtray. He quickly diverted the conversation away from himself. He needed time to gather his bearings, but that wouldn't stop her, he was sure. CODED BY DUCKIE OF GS

She opened his jacket pocket, fished out his lighter and cigarettes, tilted the pack to let one slide out like a true professional. She took it, lit it, and placed the packet and the lighter on the table, the end of the cigarette lighting up like a warm summer's day.
"Say," She began, taking a drag and blowing it into his face, smoke sink into the atmosphere. "Does it matter? I can put a coin on it and say," Another drag. "It's both as significant as you being here, and these, things," She dangled the glowing cigarette loosely from two long fingers. "Being in your pocket."
Now she smiled for herself, and let the cigarette sit in the ashtray, burning next to the remains of Jobe's crushed one.

She took out his cigarettes, her movements seeming so familiar that for a moment he doubted she'd never done it before. Just for a moment, though—he was getting lost again. He had to claw his way back to clarity to catch her words, hung on them like a fish on a hook.
The smoke against his face felt like fog and the remains of her lipstick stained the mouthpiece of the cigarette. The crushed one against the burning, but still intact one seemed ominous somehow. Comparable to seeing a vulture circling overhead while laying on a death bed. He could see this night going one of two ways and the former was plausible. In a sense, at least.
All this and he couldn't think of a single word to say. It wasn't even frustrating; maddening was more appropriate. His tongue was sandpaper and it couldn't work fast enough. "Insignificant, then?"

"What's with the hesitation?" Marina smiled coyly, happy to get an interesting response from the silver haired man.
Something warm pooled in her guts, and it might've been blood for all she cared. She leant in though, up close, hand playing with the hair beside his ear, in a slow, excruciating manner.
She whispered close, so the air would brush past his ear.
"A dull knife, will always be dull. He's never known how it feels to be sharp, after all." Her voice was slow and intoxicating, and now she caressed the side of his cheek, before her fingers moved fleetingly away.
She called for two drinks, giving the bartender a solid look and a discreet nod.

He almost had a retort ready—for once. But she leaned in, played with his hair and he could just barely pause and drink it in. Where the tips of her fingers tickled his skin, they left a trail contradictory to a cliche of fire. No, it felt ice cold, enough to make him tighten his jaw and suppress a shiver.
It felt like a game of cat and mouse, as she leaned away and her words were left in the trail of her fingers. A part of him was very insistently telling him to get up and walk out. The second round of drinks was what triggered it; but now he was irrationally choosing to stay. It had a similar feeling to when he’d invited her to the school roof in high school.
”You can always sharpen a knife.” He said. He was playing her game by her rules and he wasn’t happy about it one bit.

"Now now," Her words slurred a little, picking up her glass and swirling the drink around a little. "Don't get impatient. If you do, it all falls apart, just like your naive little comment there."
She watched the glass instead of him now, taking a sip.
"A knife born blunt won't know sharpness even if it was thrust upon them." She answered simply. "I thought I already suggested that?"
Marina's other hand now brought Jobe's glass, it now pressing against his lips.
"Don't be shy." Her red lips twisted in another smirk.

He took hold on the glass and swallowed. He considered himself to be many things, and shy wasn't one of them.
He didn't argue with her any further, didn't question how his drink tasted just the tiniest bit different than he last one because he simply thought it was different brand.
He would have said something, but then his tongue felt heavy in the literal sense of the word. In short, he felt woozy, managed to keep upright but feeling quite like he was having an out of body experience. He wasn't in control anymore.

His head falls slowly on Marina's shoulders - she'd prepared it, after all - and slips the notes across the table to the bartender. Her arms wrap around him with an almost taste of affection, if she was capable of that, of course. But there's a strange comfort that washes through her, and it makes her feel sick. Marina has to stretch her neck to let her lips trace lines at his neck, smell a distinct fragrance of dusty cologne and memories of wasted youth.
She plants a kiss on the side of his cheek, and smiles like she's smirking.

Jobe doesn't remember much, but his head is filled with fog and butterfly kisses. He's groggy and for a few seconds he cant really move, but his head is getting clearer by the minute and eventually it registers that he's on a bed and he's not alone. Slowly he lifts and arm to his head, covers his eyes before clutching a fistful of his hair. Recalling the night before takes a little longer than it should have - maybe he's as dull as Marina said. But his heart only quickens for the briefest amount of time before settling back to a normal pace. Stress pumps through his veins but he's oddly calm and not angry. Not yet, at least.
He'd wait a few seconds, half of him assessing the situation and the other half simply waiting. "Marina?" He finally says, doesn't shift his head to look at her and keeps his eyes on the ceiling.

Her head lay close to his shoulder, their bodies side by side but there's no other form of contact. Marina gained conscientiousness long before Jobe woke up from his slumber, but she pretended to be asleep by breathing slowly and keeping her eyes fixed on her understated ceiling lights.
Her living space was minimal, the room they were in consisting of only the king sized bed, bedside table and a full sized mirror with a golden Victorian frame, the minimal decor grandiose. It was understated, yet rich. She stirred a little in thought, her usually curled hair free and straight, and seemed to pool around her.
She eventually pushed herself up with an arm, hair dropping, framing her face. Marina smiles weakly, face more pale without makeup. Then, she reaches to kiss him again, this time with a prolonged dust of passion and longing.
