Dad had insisted on coming back here after three years. Mom thought the place was a bad influence. That it 'messed up something something home's natural something'. Drew didn't get it. Not when she was ten. There was a lot of yelling. She got that. The fighting... Mom always won, but surprisingly Dad won this one. It was about work and how he needed to come back to the island. So they loaded up one day and came back to the humble place near the beach. Drew stood by the door of 'what wasn't a cottage but looked an awful lot like one', hesitating. Her shoulder-length blonde hair and bangs were kept out of her hair by a headband, wavering amber eyes blinking as she peered into the dusty house. Mom called, and she stepped inside. Dad called louder and Drew hurried, almost bumping into a lamp. That's when she saw it. The biggest, hairiest demon bug ever. "SPIIIIIIDERRRRR!" the ten year old shrieked, turning tail and running from the house. Both Mom and Dad yelled after her but the girl didn't listen. She made a U-turn, taking the steps by two. She ran almost to the water but stopped, the stitch in her side pausing her. That and the family dog tugging on the back of her dress. A motherly German Shepherd they had since she was born, now growling softly at her to step away from the water when she was unsupervised. "OK, OK. Stop chewing on me. Bad enough I got to wear this silly thing..." The island just had to be warm weather. Anything to get her into a dress. When she grew up, she was going to wear pants all the time. Just to make Mom mad.

He was at the beach with his butler, the man who always kept an eye on him when his parents were too busy for him. Miles had grown used to the man's face and his parents seemed like strangers, even at 9 years old.
The butler thought it sad, but he worked hard to keep the boy safe and teach him the ways of life, even if it did take more effort than one would need. Miles was a bit different and the man knew that.
They had taken a trip to the beach to get away from the mansion and the maids. The man thought it healthy for Miles to get out from behind the iron gates of the property. The sun was warm and the sand was hot, but Miles was really enjoying himself.
His attention was pulled away though when he heard a lot of commotion nearby. There were little beach houses along the shore and Miles wandered near one when the sounds got louder. A girl's voice is what really piqued his curiosity, especially when he realized how familiar it sounded. Miles never forgot a face, or a voice.
He ran around the bend and saw a young girl, around his age, and his face lit up like Christmas when he saw who it was. It was--
"Drew!!" Miles shouted and waved frantically to the girl. I had been three years since he'd seen her and he was overjoyed with meeting up again.

The dog turned at the voice, ears up and fur bristling slightly. Though dogs don't forget a smell as much as some people don't forget faces. She visibly relaxed, allowing her tail to brush against the sand as she walked forward to greet the other child. She stopped a few paces away from her mistress, head held high. Just waiting for the boy to accept or reject her. Or even his companion to reach out and acknowledge her. The female wasn't going to be a threat. Unless somebody gave her a reason to be. "Uhh?" Drew, however, was lost in her own little revenge scheming world. She hated being dressed up like a little doll. She didn't even like dolls! She liked action figures. She liked watching cartoons where the good guys beat the bad guys up and stuff about going on magical adventures to places far far away. If there had to be any girl stuff in it, the girl had to be... well, not a girl. Still a...a girl, but not reaaaally a girl! Girls could do all the stuff that boys could do in a cartoon. They could fight and, and use special powers and still look cool. But they'd be girls. Mom thought that girls were supposed to look pretty and be polite and she was so disappointed during paper breaks when Drew went out to play in the mud oh my goodness you aren't supposed to do that!So that is why now she is fussing with the ribbon in her hair. You know how it is when you're young. Parents always seem to tie things tighter. They seem to stick you into really tight clothes and shoes. They're all so ugly and you look back on the pictures and everything it's like "wow I won't dress my kid up in that" but you will. Cause you can. "Mmmm..." she stared openly at the boy while dragging the ribbon - finally - out of her curly blonde hair. The ten year old then threw the white fabric on the beach, stomping on it while throwing up her hands in the air. "VICTORY! Don't you dare tell on me, Miles. Or I'll... somehow put you in a dress. And put that hair up in a ribbon. I'll do it! Then you'll see how it FEELS. Maybe a nice dark blue... and a white ribbon. Noooo. Pig tails." She smiled mischievously at the boy for a moment before walking over to him. Drew remembered the adult with him somewhat. He was all right, but still. She dipped her head politely to him before grabbing Miles' arm and dragging him a bit further away from the view of the summer home. She was with an adult, and her Mom and Dad always got along with Miles' family.

Miles grinned when his friend spotted him and they ran off to a different part of the beach, promising her that he wouldn't tell anyone that she stomped her ribbon into the sand and don't worry, his butler wouldn't tell anybody either. He's a good guy and keeps all kinds of secrets. That's one reason why Miles loves him so much, minus the fact that he'd hardly even seen his parents so of course the boy would regard the man as a father-figure over his own father.
He flashed his guardian a thumbs up, then followed after Drew as she pulled him off and away from the beach house to a more secluded area, smiling happily and glad that he had his friend back for another summer. "Where've you been? You were gone so long this time, Drew... You told me you'd be back the next year and before I knew it, it was three years!" Miles exclaimed, though tried to keep his voice down so that no adults could hear them. "I really missed you, Drew."
Miles didn't mention it, but he'd been counting down the days. He might have only been a young child, but he knew when he missed someone. He'd felt that feeling plenty of times before, that feeling of wanting someone you held dear close to you and not far away. He'd really missed his friend.
"You're not going to go away again, are you?" He asked, sounding scared for his friend leaving again, though she'd just gotten there. Miles should've been focusing on her being there, not worrying about her leaving already.

She let go of his arm and sat on the beach, tucking her legs close to her body. The ten year old rocked back and forth as she stared at Miles - she had a habit of rocking. It was "bad", Mom said. It was a bad, bad thing to do. Mom also used the word "annoying". You should never use that word with a kid, because the kid was going to use what annoyed the adult against them. Every kid understood what annoying meant. "That's a summer house" she responded to him, jerking her head in the direction of said building. She stated this not matter of factly, but like it was rehearsed. "it isn't my real house. I don't live here. Not like your family, or the other kids on the island. So what if I don't come back for a few summers?!" Drew was growing defensive. Even at ten, she didn't really understand why her Mom was forcing her to remain behind while Dad was allowed to come to the island whenever he wanted. She didn't understand the concept of home school. Other kids went to school. She went to school until recently... She sat up suddenly, turning her back on him so nobody could see her angry tears. He was really annoying! Asking her all kinds of questions and saying he missed her. She wasn't a parent. She didn't have control over her own life. "I don't know, Miles! Mom decides everything I do! I only came back here cause of Dad's work and me having no school for a few weeks. Can we not focus on stupid things and just enjoy the day?" she wiped away the tears, forcing a huge smile across her face before turning back to him. "And, uh, not going anywhere with huge demon spiders?"
