Aiden had been volunteered, volunteered against his will. By someone who was currently residing in England. Not to mention it was during the week he had literally begged a week's leave from the university. In Aiden's humble opinion there was something essentially wrong with the universe when injustices like these were allowed to be carried out.
But in the end he had been volunteered to help out at the children's wing at the hospital while the overworked staff took some much needed rest, so he had shown up. And as soon as he had shown his face at the supervisor's; all fresh and reporting for duty, she had burst out laughing. "I saw your name on the list, but seriously; you volunteered?!" she choked out incredulously between her gasps of laughter.
Aiden pouted, of course it had to be one of his seniors from university. Even worse, she knew of his essentially lazy stance on life- he wouldn't put it beyond her to purposely give him harder work. "Not my fault Bucky." the psychologist whined "My mum signed up in my stead. Do a mate a favor and give me an easy job?"
At the mention of her hated nickname Bucky stopped her laughter, but traces of mirth still remained in her voice. "You're never gonna grow up are you, you lazy bum? One day you'll make one hell of a henpecked husband ya' know." At Aiden's growing frown, Bucky took pity and relented with her teasing. "Alright, alright you overgrown baby; I'll give you the most docile and hard working partner I can find." she shuffled around a pile of folders before taking one out and handing it to Aiden "Just make sure everything on the list is done and keep an eye on your partner- she's a psychologist too and she's sorta an old hand at this, so you should have a ball out there."
Aiden gave an ear-to-ear grin "Thanks Bucky; I owe you one!"
Bucky shook her head in exasperation "My name is Amber you ass! Amber Balaqua- not Bucky!"
Aiden found his way to the cafeteria next, where the volunteers who hadn't been given tasks were milling about. "Oi!" he asked, his voice marginally raised- not too much, this was a hospital after all "Does anybody know a Drew Winchester? I'm her overseer." She should already have a list of the tasks that needed to be done, all Aiden had to figure out was on how to manage to foist them all on her. Oh yeah, he was the quintessential English gentleman alright.
OOC: pardon the uncouth creature that is Aiden~

instead of for somebody else IT'S OK TO JUST SMILE FOR YOURSELF - @bk201 - hi hi mort. It was just another day. A day she'd rather be lying in bed, but a day nonetheless. She convinced enough people, even herself, that she was a dutiful enough person. The fact was that she'd just rather be snoozing right now. She'd been up since what, 6 am? Well, that wasn't entirely true. She'd been up since 3 am and struggled to go to sleep. Passed out around 5 with the TV still on, forgot what movie she had been watching and woke up in alarm. She had to get going to the hospital. This week it was the hospital. Next week it was the school. Hospitals were always difficult. They expected you to get up early, be there early and the whole place smelled like masked death. Drew was used to the earthy smell of her herbs, not this... alcoholic taste in the back of her throat every time she breathed in. She decided from day one that when she finished getting her PhD that she was going to have a private practice. No hospitals for anybody, they were creepy as hell. "Mrrrffff..." she complained to nobody in particular, in no particular sort of word. Displacing her insomnia by digging her head between her arms and resting it on the cold cafeteria table.
Nobody around her cared. She was almost always the first one to get break due to lack of work. She finished faster when left to her own devices. She wasn't a perm worker here. She didn't get paid. Just another student looking to make a name for herself. It made the nurses bitter - when they actually cared to recognize her - and the doctors treated her like any other staff member. She really didn't care as long as she got respect. I should be working in the kid's wing today. I asked for that. Then again, I asked for that two weeks ago. she mused, lifting her brown eyes from the table. It was a sea of turquoise out there. She was one of the waves. Tying her long blonde hair back in a ponytail, wearing the traditional latex-feeling nurses garb... She was a grad student with a master's in psychology. She didn't need to dress up like a nurse. She wondered, not for the first time, if this was because of her gender. Mmmm. They could have given me a coat to recognize my status.
While again she was mulling things over, she didn't notice the new arrival. That or she was getting so good at blocking that particular gender out. She just remembered hearing a sort-a obnoxious voice. When one of the staff leaned over to her and gave her a poke, she jumped and turned in their direction while the lady nodded over to the arrival. Drew immediately froze up.
What part of androphobia didn't these people get? No freaking way. Nopenopenopenopenope. Haha, she was NOT going with him! She didn't care if this guy was handing out doctorates for free. Nope. Na-huh. Overseer her butt. Nobody told her about an overseer. Especially not a guy. The lady who had poked her coughed rather abruptly, the other volunteers laughing to themselves. She realized why after her initial shock and denial passed. Replaced by embarrassment. She was staring at the stranger open mouthed. Drew dropped her head, trying to imagine a world where you could still cover your eyes like a child and be socially acceptable at her age. Right. OK then. There was no way now she could back down. Slowly raising herself up she walked over to the guy and stopped fifteen feet away from him. Still didn't look at him. Stared at his feet instead. "I-I... name's... uhhh... I'm Drew Winchester."

When Bucky had claimed that the person was the most docile of the volunteers that had shown up, she had probably been understating it. And by a huge margin at that. Drew Winchester had first stared at him, mouth agape before introducing herself with a stammer- still not meeting his eyes.
Maybe he was just that handsome. Yeah right; Aiden had to hastily suppress the urge to ask whether he had something on his face alongside his freckles. One thing was certain though; he had to throw all his work at her and get away- she really didn't seem to be the type who he could see enjoying chatting with while working. But in all honesty, she was refusing to come within arm's distance or even bothering to look at him directly, which was a bit ridiculous. This was going to be one of those days.
"Right, nice to meet you Drew. My name is Aiden Shaw, I work as the student counselor at Nova U and...I'm going to be working with you today..." Aiden finished a bit lamely. Really what else could he say? Pleased to meet you? Yeah she was just oozing excitement and enthusiasm wasn't she?
"Right let's get out of here." Aiden concluded. Maybe it was all the people who were making her nervous, but Bucky had said she was a psychologist. A psychologist afraid of people- now that was a new spin on things.
Once they were out of the cafeteria Aiden turned back to his slave partner and gingerly extended the checklist that contained the day's tasks. "Err...you do have the list right? Do you have any preference on what to do first?"
Procrastination 101: Let her take charge doing what she was good at and then just...slip away like a ninja. Aiden would be out of there before Drew knew what hit her.
OOC: well he's a nice guy. as long as you're not trying to get him to do work~

instead of for somebody else IT'S OK TO JUST SMILE FOR YOURSELF - @bk201 - sorry for lateness. Drew felt like what she usually felt around men: useless. Unless they were significantly younger than her, her tongue got tied up and she could barely control her legs from making a mad dash to the nearest exit. Her first day here had proved that. The doctors thought she was having some kind of panic attack when she suddenly darted out of the room, ran down two flights of stairs... all because a male nurse stepped into the room. They even chased after her. Oh boy, it was a huge deal. Don't go near Drew Winchester, she'll spazz out. Anything with a tail between their legs is off limits. That sort of thing. So why did the staff think it appropriate to give her a male overseer when they knew about her phobia? This was her education! She can't work properly and effectively. Drew bit her lip as the guy went on and on. She tried to pay attention but her mind drifted. A few chuckles around the cafeteria, the staff whispering and openly looking at her. Don't think she didn't notice these things. It made her want to yell at them. I'm not crazy! she thought, glaring at her feet. I... I don't know what I am. Am I defective or something?
Drew heard plenty of cases of a man being afraid of women. Through sexual abuse, mommy issues or trauma. Just the top list. But she hadn't been abused. Her relationship with her father was healthy, as with any other male relative. No trauma either...
Maybe this Aiden Shaw guy sensed her discomfort, for he promptly led her out of the cafeteria and into the hall. He moved suddenly, causing her to look up instinctively and shuffle backward. The counsellor held in his hand a piece of paper. Right, she was used to this part. People of importance giving her paper. She must have a stack of paper as high as her roof. Reaching out, she grabbed it and scanned it. A list.
"I do now" Drew replied, her voice stronger now that she was focusing on work. "I-I kept requesting to work at the child's ward. But the staff never put me there. T...To be honest, I don't really know the proper procedure."
Oh no, he wasn't getting out as easily as he thought. You don't put a rookie on a ward full of children - sick children - without the rookie knowing what to do. She knew how to clean and she had her bachelor's in psychology. But that was blown to hell in the case of a real crisis. She was always shoved aside when somebody actually came in bleeding from their head or wherever. She wasn't being trained as a nurse so, it made no sense for her to do that. Still, it frustrated her.

She was supposed to be experienced in this right? Bucky specifically said Drew was an old hand at this. Well she had also said that Drew did psychology and that the two of them would get along like a house on fire. In hindsight, a house on fire was turning out to be a good comparison for this whole...fiasco.
Still, it seemed if nothing else she seemed to be passionate about the job at hand. A good sign even if her inexperience meant that Aiden couldn't push everything off on her. Well not on the first day at least, but he had plenty of time to slowly foist off his work onto her and enjoy as much free time as possible.
"Look, your over-thinking things now. We're volunteers and psychologists at best- nobody's going to expect us to do open heart surgery or anything." Aiden told her kindly. Procedure? Pfft, too much hassle and there was no need to do everything by the book anyway- he had always managed better by thinking procedures as 'friendly suggestions'. "As for the 'proper procedure'...well we don't really get a fixed procedure. I can get you a list of do's and don't if you insist, but able to think on your feet's important you know." the psychologist lectured his little minion underling.
"Just be sure to go running to any kid that calls for you, call the doctors if you think necessary- the skeleton shift is still clocking hours- keep a smile on your face, try to put one their face while your at it too. Aside for that all you have to do is check off the tasks on that list. I'll help you if you really need it."
Already it was her list and not Aiden's and the psychologist was trying to emphasize as subtly as possible that Drew should be able to handle most of it on her own. It wasn't that he was actively mean or trying to lord over Drew- but he had been volunteered against his will after all. But, he liked kids in the end; being more child than man after all. He would help if she asked. For a given definition of help anyway.

instead of for somebody else IT'S OK TO JUST SMILE FOR YOURSELF - @bk201 - sorry AGAIN for lateness. She bit her lip at his words. Yeah, she agreed. She was over thinking things. But again, you don't leave a rookie in a room of sick children. She only knew the sicknesses of people mentally, not physically. Well... OK, that was a tiny lie she was telling herself. Her studies as a Herbalist had been like a mini-doctor course. But she was not qualified to treat physical sickness, no more than she could bring in her herbs to use on any of the children. She was starting to think this guy wasn't taking things as seriously as he should. A volunteer wouldn't even be allowed in the children's ward unless they had a degree in something to do with children, and background checked. She wasn't a full psychologist yet either. The only experience she had right now was volunteering at the elementary school when she wasn't here.
Drew did things by the book. She was a logical thinker and never strayed so far from the regulations. She was not rebellious. At all. The most rebellious thing she ever did was take a drink of alcohol when she was eighteen. Under the supervision of her parents. In her parents' house. Wow. So risky. She looked down at the list he spoke of. If Mr Shaw wasn't going to take this seriously, this little list was all that stood between chaos and order!
Number one: Put the flowers that Rose's parents left for her in the vase by her bed... Old ones are starting to smell she read, thinking all the while that this was more for the nurses to do. Shouldn't she be shadowing a psychologist, not being shoved off to do chores? Guess she needed to be taught humility.
"Tell me the do's and don'ts" Drew replied, heading for the children's wing after locating the fresh flowers. Yes, she was much more confident when she wasn't looking at you and had things on her mind. Or tasks to do. "I need to get this done. I can't wait around for another list. Besides, you can think on your feet, can't you?"
The young woman had a small smile on her face as she added that in. If he was going to force her to do things by herself with no guidance, she was going to force him to forsake all his precious lists and notes and guide her by his vast experience. When she stepped into the children's ward, it was considerably more... happier than she imagined it would be. Like Sick Kid's back in Toronto. Some of the kids were up and around, playing games or talking to other children. Most stopped what they were doing when she entered. A stranger she immediately thought. Instinct was what it was. She liked their instinct to a meerkat. Flee or stay? We'll just watch for a few seconds. But since she had on the "robe of trust" aka the nurse's garb, they all turned back to what they were going in less than five seconds. The innocence of children.
"You must be Rose" Drew walked over to a girl about eight looking out her window. She was the only one with withered plants. The little girl brightened at the flowers. "your daddy and mommy got these for you. They said they'd visit later."
