TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. Saying it had been a while was an understatement. It had been over three months since Hadley had been in Nova, and the states was far from relaxing. The island was warmer than the wonderful state of Michigan she resided in for the past few months, which didn’t help the growing anxiety in her gut. She fanned herself with her hand, and took a few deep breaths before stepping up to the door to knock.
In the arm that wasn’t preoccupied with being a fan, she held a few souvenirs from her trip. A sweater, her grandpa’s fruitcake, and a tacky michigan keychain. They were all quite odd gifts, but hoped they would act as a peace offering.‘What are the odds of him being upset? Not that high… right?’ Hadley stood up straight and was prepared to meet Basil’s face with a smile.

Basil hadn't expected anybody to come by and visit him--hell, nobody ever did. So to hear a knock coming from the door confused him. He stared at it from his seat on the couch, waited a few moments, then got up and strolled over. He kept the chain locked, however, paranoid that it might be someone willing to do harm to him. Though when he opened the door as far as the crack would allow, the person standing there was the last person he expected to say.
His eyes went a little wide at the sight of the girl, then down at the things in her arm, then up at her face again. He frowned at her, closed the door, unlatched the lock chain and opened the door fully. Basil was quiet, though he motioned for her to step inside of his apartment and once she was, he slammed the door closed.
A glare formed on his face, arms hanging to the side, as he stared at her, waiting for her to speak. He was letting her go first.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. The glare was disconcerting but that wouldn’t stop her. She smiled big once again.
“Surprise!?” Hadley threw her arms out causing the gifts to drop and she scrambled to pick them up. How the hell was she supposed to start off a convo with someone a glare like that? He looked like he wouldn’t hesitate to kick her out and give her the finger.
“Fuck, oops.” After picking up the gifts she placed them on the counter and held her hands behind her back. It felt weird to look him in the eye, she knew he was upset even though she didnt want to admit it.
After gathering up some courage she looked at him and smiled awkwardly. “So how have you been?”

He couldn't believe what he was seeing to be honest. If the tables had been turned, Hadley might not ever speak to him again if he'd done what she did, but here she was smiling and goofing as if nothing had happened. As if she'd just taken a small holiday and it wasn't a big deal at all. Forget the fact that she knew, even a little, how he'd felt before she left. Nah that wasn't a huge deal.
He ignored her when she dropped everything on the floor, looking at her wordlessly until she spoke up again.
"How do you imagine?" Was all he had to say in response, crossing his arms across his chest as he looked down the bridge of his nose at her. He'd forgotten how tiny she was in height compared to him but now that he was looking at her again, it really was surprising.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. “I’d like to say good?” He looked as good as he did when she left, maybe more intense dark circles but they suited him. With him looming over her like that she slumped her shoulders and backed up a bit.
“Hey! Why do you look like you want to beat me up?” Hadley knew he’d ever lay his hands on her like that but he looked too intense right now.
“Come on, I brought you a fruitcake, and a sweater… even though its gotten really hot over here. The keychain is tacky but hey who doesnt love crappy keychains?” She had started to ramble now, not knowing what else to do. It had always been hard for her to have serious conversations, she avoided them like the plague. She didnt like the awkward feeling of talking things out at all but she knew Basil would want to.
“Look… I’m sorry?”

He didn't like her trying to play it off as if as long she was playful it would be okay, but it wouldn't work out like that. Not this time. He was hurt pretty badly by her up and leaving without any type of warning.
"You could've said something?" It was more of an upward statement than a question, though he was still confused by why she didn't say anything to him at all. "I thought we were closer than that."
He let his arms drop to his side, a huffing, hurt infliction to his words, then he walked past her to start up a pot of tea, clearly upset, but also a hint of relief surrounding him that he didn't fully realize he was showing off. It was evident in the way he let her inside, acknowledged her with speech, and even went as far as to start up tea for her. If he wasn't even a little bit relieved, he wouldn't have unlocked the door in the first place.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. Hadley frowned and sat down on the couch. It really was all her bad, she could have said something. She could have called. But her family life was a sensitive subject, involving him felt wrong.
She threw back her her and sighed. “Not even my family knew I was going to visit though…” It was mumbled but audible. The trip was truly unexpected for everyone involved and the only person who knew was Hadley herself.
“I would have told you if I knew in advanced honest… just shit happened man.” She crossed her arms, disappointed at the situation and herself. The last thing Hadley wanted to do was push Basil out of her life but signs pointed to him being more temporarily ticked off than anything else.

He listened to her as he made the tea, set up the tea tray, and brought it over to the coffee table in front of the couch. He took a seat next to her and began to fill their cups.
Basil didn't like her making excuses, at least that's what he was telling himself. Why make up excuses? But all the same, he was finding it within himself to understand her. Forgive her. However, it still didn't change the fact on how much it hurt him. It brought up old memories, old feelings, old regrets. He didn't mention that part, though.
After fixing their cups, he perked a brow at the cake and looked at her, having brought it over with a few plates and a knife. "Shall I cut this?" It would go great with the tea.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. He was changing the subject now, and she could understand why. Although she would have liked him to say more. It seemed like he was holding back more than usual, at least to her.
"Mhm, go ahead. Might as well eat it with the tea." She brought it to share with him anyways. It'd be a shame if he didn't eat any.
"Do you like fruitcake? This is my grandpa's and lemme tell you it is delicious. Soaked in rum might I add." Talking causally was fine right? She wanted to get things back to normal.
Despite what wrong she had done, she still felt comfortable in his house and around him. She just hoped he could still act the same around her.

Nodding, he cut the cake and placed small pieces for the both of them onto the plates. The cake smelled nice as he took a small whiff of it, then had a bite.
He hummed, rather enjoying the flavor, then took a sip of his tea, turning to look at her as she spoke and went on and on. Rum, huh? So that's what that flavor was. It was nice.
"I missed you," Basil said with a straight face, taking another sip of his tea as he stared at her. It was difficult to read him and he knew it, too. That's what he wanted. Perhaps she'd sound more sincere if he kept on with this? He wasn't sure...

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. Things were quiet until Basil piped up. She cocked an eyebrow at him and put down her cake.
“Really now?” She wouldn’t have been surprised if he was going to confess that he didn’t want anything to do with her, but saying that he missed her? That was a bit of a shock. Hadley scrunched her face while thinking of how to reply. She didn’t want to sound too attached but she also didn’t want to sound disinterested.
“I… I missed you as well. It was really lonely in the states to be honest.” It wasn’t like he was her only friend but she enjoyed his company a whole lot more than most. When she visited her family, she stayed in a hotel to avoid arguing night and day. When she did visit it was mostly awkward small talk so she could check up on her grandpa’s health.

He gave her a nod, then took a bite out of his cake, letting out a soft hum of satisfaction. It really was delicious. His attention was pulled to her again when she returned the affection (or well, that's what he calls it).
Unlike Hadley, Basil had no friends at all. She was, quite literally, his only friend. So from his perspective, the whole situation was a lot harsher than it would be to someone else. He'd had the only person in his life he actually cared about leave him out of nowhere. "To be honest, I thought you hated me," he replied.
He figured he would've gotten over it eventually. He was already on the road of recovery, but three months wasn't enough. It had been very lonely, though he did have his books with him and they never left, no matter what he did or said around them. But he was used to that. He didn't have anyone before Hadley, it was just that he'd gotten so used to someone always being there... He probably wouldn't allow himself to do that again for a while. He was going to be more careful.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. Hadley furrowed her brows and looked at him. "Why in the hell would I hate you?" Her voice rose an octave with the question. There was no way in hell she'd ever hate him.
She crossed her legs, uncrossed the, and then crossed them again. "What I did was stupid but lord, there is no fathomable reason for me to hate you." Hadley frowned and took another bite of the fruitcake.
The last person she would hate would be him. With as often as they hung out she had grown to put him on the list of people that could do nothing wrong. She admired him honestly, as creepy as it sounded. She was someone she looked, often times literally.

That struck a nerve, especially when her voice rose.
Basil rose up from his seat suddenly, frowning. "How the hell was I supposed to know!?" He shouted in defense. "I'm not a fucking mind reader!" Ironic.
Turning to scoot out from behind the coffee table, he stormed into his room and slammed the door, the force shaking the little chandelier that hung over the kitchen table. It was immature for him to do that, but he was hurt. But, he didn't lock his door, so it wasn't as if he was shutting her out. She could still come in if she braved the venture. He was secretly hoping that she would.

TOO AFRAID TO SHOW BUT ITS NO REASON TO STALL. Did he... did he just slam his door on her? What was he, a pissed off teenager?
She sat, stunned for a second before shouting. "Basil what the fuck!" Hadley pushed herself off the couch and approached his door, knocking on it twice.
"Open the door or I'll open it for you!" She knocked once again before counting out loud to ten. Her hand turned the knob and it opened smoothly, she was expecting it to be locked.
"Basil... you don't have to be a fucking mind reader to tell that I don't hate you. I left for a few months, but I didn't tell you to fuck off or anything!" Hadley was getting tired being apologetic, she tried her damn hardest but she just couldn't understand why he would think she hated him. She went missing in action for three months, thinking she was dead made more sense than thinking she hated him.
Now that she had entered his room, she realized she was left standing awkwardly in front of his door. Would it be rude to sit down somewhere? She figured itd be best to keep standing there until her replied.
