Orrin didn't have a car, didn't really miss it, he could walk just fine, if he had to go someplace far away he could simply take a bus but that wasn't often.
So he was walking.
The afternoon was bright, apparently school had gotten out as kids littered the district with their candy-colored shirts. Through his peripherals he kept an eye on them and most others who went about their life around him. Apparently it was a habit he wasn't going to break any time soon.
A cigarette hung lazily from his mouth as he walked in the warm spring air. He'd taken to the occasional smoke for a while now. The rancid miasma felt nice as it sat in his lungs, comforting, hot and enclosed.

A little girl with black hair in ponytails ran down the street. There were a couple kids behind her who were stronger, tougher, and ruthless. The favorite sport of the kids in question was Midori hunting - and they were chasing their prey.
Midori was slowly running out of breath. The bullies had been chasing her from school, and her backpack felt like lead on her back. One foot in front of the other, she kept running, her pace gradually declining. But as a kid reached out from behind her to grab her backpack and thus get her, Midori tripped on a trash can and fell onto the pavement, scraping her knee.
There was laughter behind her, and the little girl looked up to see the kids staring down at her. Tears welled up in the corner of her eyes as she said as aggressively as possible "Go away."

He was approaching a group of kids, laughing as they huddled around something near a few trash cans. Orrin narrowed his eyes as he walked closer, jaw clenching a little so his cigarette tilted upwards from the pressure. Times never changed much when it came to the habits of children. The actions were far too familiar to him and he didn't like it.
getting closer to the group confirmed his fears "Go away." he heard a young girl growl. His eyes narrowed further and his pace quickened to a brisk walk until he reached them, too caught up in their teasing and taunting to notice him looming over them.
"What are you doing"

Something smelled. Gasoline? Rotten food? Propane? Wood smoke? A cigarette. Midori sniffed again to confirm what the smell was. She took in a quick breath and then closed her mouth and held her nose to avoid breathing in the cigarette fumes for as long as possible. Secondhand smoke, even a little bit, was never beneficial.
Turning around to find the source, it was a guy missing part of his arm, who asked what they were doing. "They're chasing me," the little girl said quickly, closing her mouth right after she finished speaking.
