The beaches of Nova Athenis were a lot different from the beaches of Florida, but Kieran couldn't really put his finger on why. They both had white sand, blue waves and the salty smell, but they were worlds apart. Despite their differences it was still calming to walk along the shore, shoes in his hand and pants rolled up as the water washed over his tired feet. It was early, the sun was still barely cresting the horizon and the world was pink with morning. He hadn't gone on a walk like this in a long time. Life seemed to be moving so fast, like a race car with busted brakes, and he couldn't get it to stop. Soon he would crash and burn...as if he hadn't already. The raw and red new scars on his body could have proven that easily. Still, it wouldn't do to wallow. This was his fate, and he had to step up to the gallows eventually. He wasn't ready for when the floor would fall out from underneath him, though. As he was lost in thought, one of his bare feet came in contact with something metallic. His toe caught the edge of it and he almost tripped, letting out a curse as he caught himself before he face planted into the wet sand. Shaking his offended foot he looked down, noticing a golden glint buried in the sand. Red eyebrow quirked, he threw his shoes off to the side and squatted down in front of the object. Digging his fingers into the pliable sand he unearthed a long, strange golden object. It was almost cliche how stupidly he began to rub the sand off of the outside of the object. MESSENGER

The lamp had been buried in the sand long enough to dim its shine, to cake its engravings in dirt. As the being inside was awoken, it let forth thick, hot smoke that streamed from the spout and into the air, like a fog that turned the surroundings black as night. A fog that was almost hot as steam, condensing on the lamp's surface until it was shining with its former glory.
The djinn appeared as leftover smoke when it had dissipated, skin just as dark, though his broad neck and thick wrists shone with gold cuffs. His legs were crossed, he hovered up above the sand, bobbing up and down slightly above Kieran and surveying him. Not anybody impressive, but what was owed was to be given.
"Three wishes." His voice rolled like a landslide, rattled in air like a sandstorm.

When the dark smoke started to emit from the object, Kieran dropped it both out of surprise and the sudden change in the objects temperature. The hot smoke that was escaping made the metal scalding to touch, and when the surface of the object touched the salty sea water, it made a hissing noise that just added to the illusion of the smoke and... Wait, this couldn't be real, right? This was something out of a Disney movie. The creature or person or thing floating in front of him looked all too real, but maybe he was hallucinating. It certainly wouldn't have been the first time. "Wait, what?" he sputtered out lamely, not entirely sure what to say. "Is this for real? This can't be real. How am I supposed to know if this isn't just some fucked up figment of my imagination or something?" MESSENGER

The djinn cast a dark look into the water where his lamp had sunk to the bottom of the shallow shore, swaying slightly under the waves. He looked back at the human, meeting his disbelief with a smile, though it looked none too friendly a gesture.
"Perhaps it is." He replied - you never could believe what you saw, any more than the djinn could give him any reason to trust him. "Are you going to refuse, then?"

It didn't take Kieran long to realize that it didn't really matter if this was real or not. If it wasn't real, he spent a few minutes talking to himself on the beach, and no one would be the wiser. No one else was around, after all. And if it was real...well, spectacular things could happen. It felt like a scene out of a movie, really. He could have any three wishes he wanted in the world. Well, almost anything, he supposed, but even with the wide scope of wishes he could chose from right now, it was a little overwhelming. "No! No, I don't refuse," he cried out, hoping the genie wouldn't just vanish into thin air. Even though this could all just be a trick of his mind, he didn't want to lose what he had gotten so close to attaining. Wracking his brain, he finally came up with at least something he could wish for first. He got three, after all, and this was an obvious yet helpful wish. "Okay, okay. First wish. I..." How should he word this? "Basically I want it so I never run out of money. Bank account's gettin' a little low, y'know..." MESSENGER

Humans didn't accept magic as real, not most of them. But Kieran seemed to think it was worth a try, and the djinn gave a knowing smile. Predicatively, his first wish was for money. Simple, earthly; typical.
"Done." He didn't so much as wave his hand or twitch a finger. He gave a nod in affirmation and a smile as he waited for the next one. Waited to see if he'd have anything more interesting to wish for.

There were no sparks, no magic, nothing. Just a nod and a verbal affirmation. Well, if this was all a hallucination, Kieran supposed he wasn't really out much. He was expecting a little more...pizzazz, but he wasn't going to argue the fact lest the genie get angry and reverse the wishes. Did that happen? He didn't want to risk it. "Okay, okay, um...next wish," he muttered to himself, trying to think of something he truly wanted. He only got three of these wishes, so he couldn't mess it up; he wanted to make sure he got the most out of this bizarre yet heavenly opportunity. "Okay, uh, how to explain this one," he mused. "Basically I want to stop being Angel's bitch, however that happens...like, he stops hating me and I stop owing him and his boyfriend for the rest of my life." MESSENGER

The wish was simple, and there wasn't much flair to be done with it, not after the djinn had lost count of how many times it had been granted. He hovered above the waves, lapping at the shore to count out the seconds while Kieran thought of his next wish. The djinn didn't rush him; immortal beings were incredibly patient.
"Forgiveness." It was something that all of Kieran's new money couldn't buy. People could be stubborn, but their minds bent easily under the weight of his power.
"And your final wish?"

The genie wasn't disapproving at least, and somehow that made Kieran feel proud of himself, like he made a good wish or something. Even though he really could ask for frivolous things, as he was very prone to being frivolous...but this whole deal with Angel was really making his life horrible, and that was something he truly, truly wanted to be over. And now he just had one wish left. He pondered it long and hard, or at least by his standards, as the waves washed over his bare feet. They were soothing, calming...he was able to focus, at the very least. The djinn was unbelievably quiet, too, barely making any noise at all as he floated in front of him, waiting expectantly. "Okay, I got it," he finally said, looking up with his good eye. "It sounds fuckin' lame, I'm sure, but... I just wanna find true love. Like, uh, my soulmate or something," he said, scratching at the back of his neck. "I'm probably not ready for that at all but I just wanna find her..." MESSENGER

The first two wishes had been simple, nearly thoughtless, asking for solutions to problems at the forefront of his mind. The last one, he took a moment to really consider, to make it worthy. The djinn didn't press him to answer - it wasn't a long wait, not by his standards.
He smiled, amused. That wish wasn't as concrete, but it was possible. "Very well." The djinn looked Kieran over. The waves still lapped at the shore, nothing seemed to have changed, but at the same time very many things had changed. Magic didn't happen in tectonic bursts, it was always there.
"Is that all?" He said after a moment's pause. He had granted all he owed, but if Kieran asked the right question, he might get an answer.

The genie asked if he had anything else. Kieran was a little confused, since he thought he only had three wishes, but he was going to take advantage of this opportunity if he was able. There were probably a thousand questions he could ask, but he didn't want to seem presumptuous or anything. For as dull as he could be, Kieran wasn't completely stupid. Not wanting to take too long forever, he looked down at the sand contemplatively as he tried to focus. There was one thing that he was curious about, in response to his last wish. While the other two wishes had been more concrete and he knew what was going to happen (or what he hoped would happen; while this was a strange circumstance that could be a hallucination, he really wanted it all to be real) the last was very open-ended. "I guess I have one question," he said, rousing himself from his thoughtfulness. "About the last wish...when am I going to find her? Just, you know, so I have some kind of point of reference..." Because for all he knew, he could find her in sixty years or maybe tomorrow. Knowing when it was going to happen, or approximately so, would help a bit. MESSENGER

There was no obligation past this point, but Kieran wasn't the worst human he'd dealt with. He hadn't wasted time wishing for more wishes or world peace, his requests had been straightforward enough. So was this one - a simple question with a simple answer.
"You know her already." Or maybe not quite so simple an answer. It almost entirely missed the question, in fact. But it was all he would get. Like a wave of heat, a disappearing mirage, the djinn was gone in a shimmer of light, only a dark smoke left furling faintly around the lamp.

Well, that wasn't the answer he expected. As soon as the djinn said it he instantly started to wrack his brains for all the girls he knew in his life, but he soon realized that he knew a lot of them. Cursing himself a bit he was about to turn back to the djinn to ask another question when he noticed that he was gone, leaving nothing but the smoking lamp.
Not sure what to do with the object he simply reburied it. He didn't know if it was bad luck to carry around a lamp or if he was supposed to wait for the next person to find it, and continued on his way, mind still clouded with the thoughts of that last question he asked, and the answer the genie gave him.
