She stares wide-eyed at the carefully planned route on the map, then at the busy, lively streets full of unfamiliar people. She's pushed around by the foreign crowds with their destinations, but she bravely pushes onward towards... where is she going again? Too meek and new to part the rushing stream of people, she finds a rest stop in an empty space next to a stop sign. Then she attempts to study her map again, retracing her path and -- what. B-but she's so sure -- she double checks her map and looks everywhere, only to find that she is nowhere near the university campus. She. Is. Lost." EH?!!" She makes a loud noise of bewilderment, drawing some curious attention from passersby, but it doesn't matter because she's lost. "어떻게? 어떻게?" She mumbles feverishly, trying to find her place on the map except she can't. Where is this? Where is she? WHERE? "난미쳤어. 미쳤어!" Even after looking around again, she still can't find anything remotely helpful. So she squats down, furiously scratches at her head, and buries her face in her hands. She miserably murmurs to herself, "바보야." Sudden idea. She shoots up almost comically. This is the prime opportunity to practice her English. "Do you know where dis school is?" She asks someone in a heavy accent, holding up the university's pamphlet. notes: hahaha this sUCKS (translation; 어떻게?=What do I do?, 난미쳤어=I'm crazy, 바보야=Stupid)

Honestly, Val didn't like being out so much, but he had to get to and from work somehow. It really didn't pay to own a car on Nova since there was plenty of public transportation and he didn't even have a local driver's license yet. Unfortunately, that meant a lot of walking and a lot of interacting with other people.
Today was a prime example. He was just trying to take the bus back to his apartment, and he was running late. Of course. He had gotten tied up with a difficult customer and barely clocked out on time. Everything was very dependent on schedules, so if he got a little bit off it would take hours to get home instead of a few minutes.
So that's why he wasn't entirely thrilled when a random girl stopped him from his brisk walk to ask a question. His annoyance subsided a little, however, when she spoke - she obviously wasn't from around here. He could relate, even if he was a little bothered.
"Are you looking for the university then, yes?" he asked to make sure. He didn't want to send her off in the wrong direction, even though his voice sounded a bit curt and clipped. He was still on a time crunch and only had seconds to spare.
@jae // basically you gotta find a way to keep him around

She nods excitedly, despite the stranger's hurried tone, and continues speaking with her accent, "Yes, I am looking for dis uniboshitee!" People are so helpful in Nova Athenis -- wait. Who's to say that the man might point her to the wrong direction? It's happened before and she won't have that happen again. So she takes the stranger's hand and stares at him seriously. She doesn't want to get lost on her own again; it's scary enough the first time. "Please help me looking for uniboshitee," She says seriously, "I am bad with directions." notes: @valerian; does this work

Well, he certainly wasn't going to be getting home any time soon. While he was a bit frustrated and annoyed with this situation he couldn't just let this girl wander around on her own, looking for the university. She could get mixed up in a less than savory part of town, and that wouldn't be good at all.
"Yes, I'm helping you find the university," he said a little matter-of-factly, not sure why she needed to reiterate it twice. Still, he pondered the best way to explain. He started out by trying to tell her how to get there via bus, and then he tried to explain some walking directions, but nothing worked and he was probably confusing her.
"Okay, it would just be easier if I showed you," he sighed, still not thrilled about having to do all of this, but he supposed he was doing it to be a 'nice person,' as if it would give him some self-validation later. Motioning for her to follow he went to the nearest bus station and grabbed the bus map.
He was in for a long explanation, he was sure.

To be honest, she's downright befuddled when the man tries to give her directions. She honestly tries to understand what he's trying to say, but she can't. The bus routes in Nova Athenis are too different than America's and Korea's. Learning America's was hard enough. Well, at least now she knows that the man is trying to help her. (More than that guy who got her lost in the airport.) So she follows the man with great enthusiasm, perhaps a bit too much by her standards, and manages to catch up with him. It's strange to follow someone whose name she doesn't know. Feeling a great need to make friends with this man, she pipes up, "Thank you bery much. My nayme is L- uh, Jae-eun. What iz yours?" @valerian

She followed him, catching up eventually. He was quite a bit taller than her so his stride was longer; he'd have to remember that so she wouldn't get lost in the crowds. For as annoyed as he was, he didn't want this girl to get misplaced and not be able to find her way anywhere. He wasn't that heartless.
Looking down at her when she arrived, she told him her name and asked for his. Jae-eun. That wouldn't be terribly hard to remember, though he certainly hoped he could pronounce it correctly. He liked Asian culture as much as the next guy (okay, maybe more) but he wasn't terribly familiar with Korean.
"I'm Valerian," he said. "Er, I guess...if that's too difficult to say, you can just call me Val."
He usually didn't like being called Val, but if it made it any easier for her he supposed he wouldn't mind that much. Besides, he told her she could call him that, instead of someone just assuming that they could say that.

Jae-eun attempts to pronounce his name. "Balleli?" She tried. She scratches the back of her head; her face turns beet red as looks off to the side. "Sorry." She practically said it almost like Galilei... mental note: work on pronunciation. ( Again.) Although, the man's name sounds close to "valor". Valerian sounds like a noble name for a noble man. "Val, your name is very nice." Jae-eun says offhandedly. ( Yes, she got the v right.) Then she laughs lightly. "If you're Val, then I'm Jae!" So far, not one person has managed to correctly pronounce her name ever since she stepped foot in America. Hopefully her new nickname should be easier to say. And nicknames are essential to friendships, obviously. @valerian

He couldn't help but offer a smirk at her attempted pronunciation at his name. He supposed that combination of letters was strange enough in English to a native speaker versus a non-native speaker. As if his parents couldn't have given him an odder name.
"Oh, er, thanks," he said when she complimented his name, not sure how to respond. It's not like he picked it out himself or anything. And he was still too new and awkward in this relationship between him and Jae for him to really return the favor; it's not like they were best friends or anything. It wasn't really in his nature to be so complimentary.
"Jae it is, then." While Jae-eun hadn't been terribly hard to pronounce, if she wanted him to call her Jae he would. Still, standing around doing nothing wasn't going to get them to the university, so he opened up the bus map he'd grabbed a few minutes prior.
Laying it flat he found the bus stop they were at, and explained as best as he could how the different lines worked. He was glad they were all color coded, because that made it easy enough to show which bus she needed to get on to.
"The bus to the university is this green line. All of these dots along the green line are bus stops. You can wait at any of those bus stops to get on the bus. When the bus comes, you just pay the driver, and he will announce when the university's stop is next. Does that make any sense at all...?"
He certainly hoped it did because he wasn't sure how to explain it otherwise.
