| it's like i'm | sleepwalking It hadn’t exactly been easy for Syca these past couple of months. He now found himself lonelier than ever, but still kept himself isolated from the rest of his circus “family.” If anything, the man isolated himself even more after the death of his parents, staying quiet unless he was required to speak and keeping to himself when he didn’t have to rehearse with the others. At first, aside from their occasional condolences for his loss, the others mostly left him alone, though that couldn’t last forever.
Despite some of the others’ efforts to be nice to him, he had very few friends. Even Syca found himself starting to get lonely after a while, but there was only one person he really wanted to talk to. Still, it took him a good couple of months before he finally talked himself into calling her, and even then he hesitated with his hand over the phone.
Did she even want to talk to him? Syca couldn’t help but have his doubts; it had been a few years after all. He quickly shook those thoughts from his head before he psyched himself out again and picked up the phone, dialing her number.
Everything was quiet after he finished pressing the last number. He couldn’t help but worry he got the number wrong until he finally heard it start to ring, and he wasn’t sure if he should be relieved or even more nervous. It was too late to back out now. @genesis ☾sycamore dayan |

Genesis made her way through life alone. It was a decision she'd made when she was 17 years old, packing her things to run away from the circus life she'd known forever. It's not like she made it very far, at least in terms of physical space, but the world of the university versus the world of the circus was at the opposite end of the universe.
She had all but forgotten about the circus life. It was back there in the depths of her mind, remembering the acts she did and the memories she made. She'd had friends, she'd had her family. It didn't matter though; being in the circus wasn't what she wanted to do with her life and escaping was the only way for her to be truly happy.
Or so she had expected, anyways. She'd never really admit to herself that maybe being alone all the time was a little bit lonely.
She never really forgot her family. Her parents were but memories, two people who she shared DNA with but that was about it. She'd never felt close to her parents, and resented them a bit for forcing her to become a performer. But Sycamore was different, of course. He was her brother, her partner in crime, and the only person in the world who she felt truly close to. Now he was just a memory too.
Sometimes she thought about all of these things while sitting in her apartment, alone, just like she had wanted. She didn't even have a pet to keep herself company. Maybe she was putting herself through some subconscious, self-inflicted penance for leaving her brother behind. For someone who was supposed to be good at figuring people out, Genesis had no clue what she was even about.
When the phone rang she wasn't expecting it, and it startled her. Grabbing her phone she looked at the screen, reading an unknown number, but it was from the area. Unsure of who it was, she punched the green 'answer' key anyways and lifted the device to her ear, clearing her throat gently.
"Dr. Gen Dayan speaking," she said simply and curtly. "May I ask who is calling?"

| it's like i'm | sleepwalking At first, Syca didn’t know what to say. It had been so long since he had last talked to his sister that he had almost forgotten what she even sounded like, but when she spoke it all started coming back to him. Still, she sounded different somehow, or was he just imagining it? Shaking those thoughts from his head, he finally spoke up.
“Hey, Gen,” the man began a bit awkwardly, not really sure how to start this conversation. Hell, he wasn’t even sure what he wanted to say to her. “Um, this is Syca. I’m not calling at a bad time, am I…?”
He felt very tense, and wished he could just relax. This was his sister for crying out loud, there was no need to treat her like she was some kind of stranger, even if they hadn’t talked in years. Still, he couldn’t help fidgeting a little as he awaited her reply. Would she even want to talk to him? She hadn’t even called once in all those years after all...

The line crackled a bit, but that voice...she'd know it anywhere. When he confirmed, yes, that it was Sycamore, she couldn't say anything for a little bit. How strange; she was just thinking about him, and then out of the blue he called her. Then again, it's not like she'd ever thought about calling him all these years, but she needed that time alone, or so she thought.
"Hi, Syca," she said, dropping the formalities immediately. Her voice was different. It was softer, more vulnerable, even. She'd never sound like this around anyone...anyone but her brother.
What would they talk about? Maybe he had a reason for calling. It could be anything really. Something might have happened that he was obligated to tell her about or maybe he just wanted to chat after all these years. Vocally the two of them had never been close but they shared a deep, unspoken bond when they were little. Gen wondered if that was still the case now.
"Why are you calling?" she asked, and it sounded a bit harsher than she'd wanted it to. "It's just...it's been so long."

| it's like i'm | sleepwalking Gen immediately dropped the formalities as soon as she realized who he was, which he was grateful for. He could also hear the tone of her voice change to something he was more accustomed to, and he knew this was the Gen he had grown up with. This phone call was already awkward enough as it was, but now he could at least try to be more comfortable.
But then she asked why he was calling. It was probably odd to finally call her after all these years, and to be honest, Syca didn’t know all of the reasons he had called. Part of him was lonely and still missed her, and wished she would come home, but he wasn’t going to tell her that. No, there was another reason he had finally called her, even if it had taken him months.
“Well,” the man began, his voice going a little quieter. “It’s about our parents…” He took a small breath, not sure how she would react to the news. “Gen, they… passed away a few months ago.”

When Sycamore said that their parents had died, she was silent. It was difficult to comprehend; she hadn't seen them in so long and now that they were gone, she would never see them again. She didn't want to cry, but it was just very shocking. Gen had never been very close to her parents, but they were still her parents.
"Oh, Syca," she sighed. "That must have been so hard for you..."
It didn't really matter what she felt like. Sycamore had been closer to them, or so she presumed, since he stayed with them for so much longer than she did. As much as she didn't like the circus life or her family, she really did care for her little brother.
"How are you holding up?"

| it's like i'm | sleepwalking As soon as he had told her the news, there was silence on the other end of the line. Syca remaind silent as well, not sure if he should say anything to break it, though he had no idea what else he could even say. He had never bee one who was very good with words, and he had no idea how his sister was even taking this. She hadn't exactly been very close to their parents, not as close as he had been.
Of course, when she spoke up again, it was out of concern for him. He swallowed a bit, feeling his throat growing a little tighter, but tried his best to ignore that. This was still a difficult subject for him to talk about, but he really didn't want to let her know that -- at least not right now.
"I'm fine," he replied evenly. That was a lie, of course, he was very much not fine. However, if there was one thing the man was good at doing, it was hiding his emotions from others.

While she hadn't spent any time with Sycamore for a while now, she could tell when he was hurting. He tried hard to hide it in his voice but she could still detect that it was there. Besides, almost no one in their right mind wouldn't be upset after their parents passed away, at least not so soon afterwards.
Genesis, of course, was excluding herself in this, even if she did know that she' wasn't probably in her right mind at all.
While this was quite a thing to drop on something, Gen wondered if there was any other reason he'd called now. It was an odd time to call to let her know that her parents had died, so she was sure that there was something else going on. While he could have just needed time to cope, it still wasn't anything typical at all. Even though life was quite abnormal, people had patterns and ways about them and putting something off like this wasn't really Sycamore's style. At least it never used to be.
"Is there any other reason you're calling...Syca?" she said, venturing to use his old nickname. Genesis and Sycamore were mouthfuls, especially for children, so they had called each other nicknames. Syca for Sycamore and Genie for Gen - the only person in the world that could call her Genie would be Sycamore.

| it's like i'm | sleepwalking Genesis, of course, could read him well, even over the phone. Though they had spent so long apart from each other, they hadn't quite changed enough for the other to not know something was wrong. Even he could sense that Gen wasn't as fine as she pretended to be, though for now he wouldn't bring it up. She, however, seemed to realize that this wasn't the only reason for him to call.
“Well...” Syca wasn't sure how to bring this up. Was it too much to ask of her to finally come home? The acrobat couldn't help but feel like he was being selfish for even thinking of it, considering she had already built her own life away from them, but after a while he felt like he had to at least try. “We haven't really seen each other in so long, you know...,” he began a little awkwardly.

Syca's voice just sounded so...lonely. It was empty and forlorn and it made Gen feel worse and worse the more he spoke. His last statement was nearly the icing on the cake and she rubbed her forehead, trying not to let the guilt consume her. Genesis didn't care much about a lot of things, but her brother was one of the few things in this world she truly still cared about.
"Sycamore," she sighed a little bit, starting to resent the office she held, resent the work she had done. It was selfish for her to run away and leave him behind. If she could have brought him with, she would have...but that would've been impossible.
"Do you want to meet up, or something?" she asked finally after a grueling silence, unaware of what her little brother was actually thinking.
