| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | It was rare that Hazel found herself with a day where she was totally free. Usually she had some work to do -- lessons to plan, papers to grade, that sort of thing -- or at least had something planned. However, on this particular Saturday, she finished up the last of her work relatively quickly. Upon putting everything up to prepare for the upcoming Monday, the blonde glanced around and realized there wasn't really anything left to do, and she had neglected to make plans with anyone for today.
After mulling it over for a short while, she decided visiting the circus wouldn't be a bad idea. She enjoyed watching the show, and afterward could enjoy spending some time with her good friend Shani if she wasn't too busy.
With that plan in mind, Hazel glanced at the clock on the wall and grabbed her purse. If she hurried, she could make it on time for the show.
The trip there took little time, and it wasn't long before she had sat herself in the stands towards the back, enjoying the acts that were shown one after the other. Shani's dancing, of course, was splendid, and the young woman couldn't help but feel a little jealous as she watched.
After it was over, she stood up, making her way over to where she knew the other woman would be, smiling as she gently tapped her on the shoulder.
"I really liked your dancing today," Hazel greeted cheerily.

Shani had her own tent - a large tank fixed in the center, lighting up the inside with a blue, rippling glow. She had a dressing room in a small adjacent tent, where she changed into normal clothes, left her costume to dry. She had a towel draped over her shoulders, her hair was still damp, but it was a bright sunny day and she'd dry off quickly by her next show.
She usually wandered the circus in between performances, and while she didn't mind doing so alone, she was pleasantly surprised when she was greeted by a familiar face almost right away. "Thanks!" With a bright smile, Shani pulled Hazel into a brief friendly hug. "I'm starving though, you want to get something to eat with me?" She offered.

| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | Hazel smiled and hugged her friend in return before glancing around the tent. Shani’s tent always looked so nice to Hazel, with the way the light reflected on the water and caused the rippling patterns to shine all around the place.
She turned and smiled back at Shani when she made the offer. Hazel was feeling a little hungry herself; she had snacked a little during the performance but that definitely wasn’t enough to fill her up.
“Yeah, sounds good,” she replied cheerfully. “Where do you wanna go eat?”

She flashed Hazel a smile as she eyed the tent - to Shani, it felt like home - before leading the way out and into the flow of the crowd. In full costume and make up, she stood out whether on the stage or not, but now she might as well have been another visitor with a friend as they walked along the dirt paths between tents.
Most of the food stalls were in the center, and Shani knew the maze of tents that made up the circus like the back of her hand - she didn't need to read signs or even give much thought to where she was going, as her feet seemed to carry her by themselves.
The majority of circus food was greasy, unhealthy, and she didn't make a habit of eating it regularly. But this would be a treat. "We could share a platter." She suggested - they could see once they got there.
The two of them had met when Hazel had seen Shani dance, though now their friendship extended past the circus grounds, it was nostalgic to be here together again. "How have you been?"

| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | Hazel followed close behind Shani as she weaved her way through the crowds of people gathered around the stall. The aromas of all sorts of different foods, most of them deep fried, filled the air around them, and Hazel could feel her mouth starting to water. She didn't eat junk food like this often, but every once in a while it was nice to indulge a little.
"That sounds good," the blonde replied, smiling at her friend. She doubted if she could eat the entire thing by herself, so this would be a good way to save her money and not have to worry about overeating, especially with such greasy food.
"I've been doing well," Hazel replied, smiling over at Shani. "How about you?"

She smoothed down her damp hair, though she knew it would prove futile when it dried out and frizzed up. It couldn't be helped - working in water had its pros and cons, but at the end of the day it was too fun to give up.
"Good as ever." Shani said, jostling through the crowd that always seemed to stick near the center, people stopping to eat, to decide which tent to visit next. She glanced over her shoulder to make sure Hazel was still with her, pausing and pointing at a stall. "Fries?" She was hungry enough to eat anything at this point.

| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | Hazel pushed her way through the crowd of people, trying to keep up with Shani. Her friend slipped between them with ease, but the blonde struggled a little to keep up with her. Thankfully she never fell too far behind, and looked up when Shani turned to address her. "Oh, fries sound good," she replied with a smile. Though she tried to eat mostly healthy foods, she really did love a good batch of french fries. Hazel followed her to the booth, chipping in a bit of cash when they ordered it.

They paid together, and Shani carried the paper plate, heavy with steaming hot fries, to an empty table for two, plopping down on a seat. She picked a fry off the plate, then a few more, ravenous as she was, before she rested her elbows on the table and leaned in closer to Hazel.
The fries were fresh and piping hot. Not a healthy lunch, but a treat for the two of them, though seeing Hazel again was a treat enough for Shani. "Alright so, have you been?" She said again. "Details."

| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | Hazel smiled a little as her friend quickly began to eat the fries, only taking a little for herself. She wasn't as hungry as Shani was, and ate hers much slower. While the other woman was eating, Hazel's mind wandered a bit, and she glanced over at a group of people, though not really focusing on them. When Shani spoke up again, the blonde turned back to her and smiled.
“Oh, nothing too interesting, really,” Hazel replied. “I've mostly just been busy with work.”

Shani grinned. Whatever most people deemed uninteresting always seemed interesting to her. She'd never been to school, and she'd never had formal education. She knew how to read and write and do math, but her parents had thought the most important lessons were practical ones. "Well, at least you got today off." She said, waving a hand absently in the air. "Though, I heard it was gonna rain." She added with a frown. The sky looked too clear, only a few white clouds dotting it.

| | | i'm dead in the water still looking for you i'm dead in the water can't you see? can't you see? | Hazel wasn't sure why, but Shani always seemed to be interested in what she thought were some of the more boring aspects of it. She supposed it was rather nice to have someone willing to listen to that sort of thing when she was in the mood to talk about it, however, though sometimes the girls could get too busy to be able to hang out and chat as often as the blonde would like. (Most of the time it was her who didn't have the time to make it down to the circus to visit her friend, which she always felt a little guilty about.)
“Yeah, I heard that too,” Hazel replied, casting her gaze up to the sky. It looked blue and harmless now, though a few clouds were rolling in. They probably had a little bit of time left before it really started to rain on them, but she figured it'd be safer to give herself time to head home, since she didn't bring a coat or umbrella for it. “I hope the rain doesn't get too bad, I'd hate for this nice day to end so quickly.”
