| | | here i am a rabbit-hearted girl frozen in headlights it seems i've made the final sacrifice | Maribelle pulled her slender arms over her head and laced her fingers together as she stretched, rising on the balls of her feet a little. She held that pose for a few long seconds before letting out a long sigh, both arms flopping back to her sides. Blue eyes glanced around at the empty tables in the cafe, and she repressed yet another sigh, leaning her elbows on the counter in front of her. It had been an excruciatingly long day, and there had only been one person who had stopped in. It was a man, who just ordered a pastry and coffee to go, before quickly heading back out the door and living poor Maribelle all alone. She didn't even have any coworkers with her today, since it was expected to be slow. (But not this slow! the girl thought bitterly.
The redhead leaned her cheek on the palm of her hand, listening to the old clock on the wall ticking away the seconds ever so slowly, and Maribelle was so sure she would end up dropping dead of old age before her shift finally ended. Not only was this probably the worst way to spend a perfectly nice day ever, she definitely was not going to be making very much money today. You needed customers to get tips, after all.
Moving to stand up straight again, the young woman unclipped her long orange hair and let it fall, gently running her fingers through it as she glanced out the window. Outside, people were walking up and down the street, walking right past the little cafe she was trapped in, much to her frustration. Surely someone passing by would be hungry or thirsty, or maybe wanted a nice quiet place to sit. Clearly that wasn't the case, and the more she watched potential customers walking right on past (and, in her mind, totally abandoning her in her time of need, those selfish jerks) she grew more and more frustrated.
Nearly yanking out a somewhat stubborn knot that had found itself in her long hair, Maribelle finally let out that second sigh before twisting it in her fingers and wrapping it into a slightly messy bun at the crown of her head, clipping it back into place. This job wasn't supposed to last that long, only to help pay the bills until she was discovered and inevitably became a famous, rich supermodel. However, not one person had really discovered her yet, and she couldn't understand why.
I should be out there right now, looking for work or something! Maribelle thought, glaring up at the clock as if it was to blame for all of her boredom and frustration. But nooo, I'm stuck here, wasting my time for absolutely no reason.
She vaguely played with the idea of quitting, which played out dramatically in her mind like a scene out of a movie: her throwing her apron down in front of her boss and yelling "I quit!" loudly enough for the whole place to hear before marching straight out the door and, of course, straight into the fame she so desired (and in her opinion, deserved). However, seeing that there was no one here to even yell at, it seemed unnecessary for such theatrics. Besides, if she told he parents she had quit, they'd probably scold her about it nonstop, and she really didn't want to deal with that right now.
Suddenly, Maribelle's thoughts were interrupted by the chime of the little bell that dangled above the front doorway, signalling that someone had finally decided to pay the cafe a visit. She instantly turned her attention to the new customer and put on her biggest smile before going over to her eagerly.
"Welcome, welcome!"

For being someone who dealt with the public so often, Genesis enjoyed her time alone most out of everything. Then again, maybe that's exactly why she enjoyed her time alone. She didn't have to listen to people's problems, which turned out to be repetitive and boring most of the time. Every once and a while there was an interesting, well-knit case presented before her, but most of her clients just seemed to be people with minute problems.
That was okay, of course. Maybe she was just frustrated today; feeling like she was stuck in some sort of rut in her day job. But she craved something interesting to fall in her lap, something she could really use her brain and education to solve versus textbook cases of anxiety, paranoia, obsession...the list went on.
Those people needed help too, she reminded herself. And Genesis knew that. Maybe she was just in a mood today. She left the office a little earlier than normal for lunch today, the stuffy air choking her. Walking out into the balmy, breezy 11 a.m. air, she took a nice deep breath through her nostrils before she ended up walking, going down the road just a bit to a quiet cafe.
There was no one around and she liked that. It would be a nice and peaceful lunch where she could just relax and maybe unwind a little before she went back to work to deal with mundane client after client. Approaching the cafe, she walked through the doors and caused the bell to tinkle, signaling her arrival.
An overeager waitress greeted her at the door, and Gen almost recoiled visibly, but she kept her wits about her. One overzealous waitress was better than a cafe full of noisy people. When the redhead greeted her brightly upon her arrival, she simply nodded in response, sitting at a two-person table close to the cafe's window.
Scooting up, she accepted a menu that the waitress had since brought over to her, and perused the items. She'd never been to this cafe before, so she'd have to see what kind of food they had and what she actually found appetizing.
"I'll just start with a coffee, black with no sugars or cream," she said, eyes still trained on the menu as she read through each item.

| | | here i am a rabbit-hearted girl frozen in headlights it seems i've made the final sacrifice | The woman who had walked in didn't seem to be very talkative. That was a little disappointing, since Maribelle was hoping they could at least chat a little bit to help pass the time. Maybe she'd warm up after a little bit, the younger girl reasoned as she lead the woman o her table and handed her a menu.
Unfortunately, things didn't look very promising still, since the woman didn't seem to want to lift her eyes from her menu even as she addressed Maribelle. Suppressing a sigh, the young woman cheerily responded she'd be right back with the coffee before walking to the back.
As she poured the coffee for the woman, Maribelle couldn't help but grumble to herself inwardly. Of course when she finally did have a customer, she seemed completely uninterested in talking. The redhead hoped she wouldn't have to just sit there in even more uncomfortable silence and pretty much watch the woman ignore her and eat. No, she definitely had to try to get her to talk before she finally died from boredom.
With this plan in mind, Maribelle smiled and walked back to the table, setting the coffee down in front of her customer.
"Here's your coffee, ma'am," the waitress said in her most cheerful voice. "Have you decided what to order yet?"

Just before the overly-peppy waitress brought her coffee, she decided on the avocado club sandwich. It sounded light and refreshing and definitely something to brighten up this dull and mundane day. She heard the delicate clink of porcelain on tile and the waitress's voice directly afterwards.
She was an excitable girl, or so it seemed. Or maybe the peppiness was just an act. She didn't know which was the case but it was a little grating. Gen supposed that most customer service-oriented jobs placed a high priority on friendliness and peppiness but sometimes she just wished they wouldn't have to be so annoying about it. Maybe she was just being a bitter old woman.
"Yes, I have," she responded curtly. "I'll take the avocado club sandwich with a side salad. Raspberry vinaigrette on the side, please."
Even if she wasn't in the best mood, that didn't mean she wouldn't be polite. What was she, some kind of brute? No, while Genesis could be snarky enough in her head, she'd never say that out loud in this situation. The girl was just doing her job, even if she was much too bubbly for her tastes.

| | | here i am a rabbit-hearted girl frozen in headlights it seems i've made the final sacrifice | The woman's response was curt, but at least she tacked on a "please" at the end -- that was some improvement, right? Maribelle just nodded in response as she scribbled the order down on her notepad before taking the menu and cheerfully stating she'd be right back, walking to the back of the cafe again.
Maribelle let out a small huff once she was back there, wondering what she could do about this predicament. This woman was not entertaining in the slightest, and she showed no signs of wanting to really have a conversation with her. Nevertheless, that kind of thing had never stopped the redhead before. She just needed to figure out something that would get the woman talking... Maybe she could start off with a bit of small talk, and then try to latch on a conversation topic from there.
With a new plan in mind, Maribelle gathered the food onto her tray and walked back over to the table with a smile on her face. As she set the plates down, her blue eyes glanced over at her customer, trying to read her expression to see what would be a good way to start.
"So, is this your first time here?" the girl asked cheerily. "I don't think I've seen you come in before."

The girl cheerfully took her order and left to put the order in. Genesis was a bit relieved when she left; this redhead was way too much for her to handle, at least in a mood like this. She was tired and hungry. Maybe after she got some food in her stomach she wouldn't be so cold, but greater powers reminded her that no, she would not change in the slightest. She was Gen Dayan, after all.
It was an all too short break when the waitress returned, her food on a tray. It was placed in front of her and it really did look delicious. Assuming that the girl would leave her to her eating, she began to drizzle some of the vinaigrette on her salad when she heard the chipper voice from her left again. It took all of Gen's composure not to jump.
"This is my first time here," she repeated, almost robotically. "And I'd really, really love to try out the food to see if it is good. In peace."
Genesis certainly wasn't in the mood to deal with small talk, especially small talk with strange waitresses who hovered over people as they attempted to eat.

| | | here i am a rabbit-hearted girl frozen in headlights it seems i've made the final sacrifice | Maribelle shrank back a bit when she replied, not-so-subtly implying that the redhead was annoying her. She bit her lip and just nodded slightly, taking a small step back.
"Right, of course," the young woman replied. "I'll just leave you too that, then. If you need anything, feel free to call me over."
With a small, dejected sigh, she turned and returned to the back, trying to busy herself by straightening out some things, though there was little to really do. They day was just getting worse with each passing minute, and Maribelle was sure if nothing happened soon she really would drop dead from boredom.
She wondered what she said or did that rubbed the woman the wrong way. The girl was just trying to be friendly after all. Was she just having a bad day, or did Maribelle do something to tick her off somehow? She carefully glanced over at the woman, trying to decide just what the problem was.

Thankfully the girl left so she could eat in peace. Finishing her food, which wasn't half bad, Genesis read over a nearby paper that she snagged. It was always better to have something to do while she ate, because sitting alone and eating while staring off into space got quite boring.
The girl had seemed a bit dejected, now that Gen thought of it. Maybe she wanted to talk. Gen spent most of her day talking, so chatting with the waitress at a cafe wasn't exactly what she wanted to do. Still, she felt a bit bad about being snappy (as she was much more clear-headed with some food in her stomach) and when the bill came, she left a sizable tip before leaving to head back to work.
FIN.
