School had just ended, and it was a good day. Lucie had left her classroom with her students, and on the way had run into a lost first grader who was looking for the buses. Lucie couldn't turn down someone who needed help, especially a little six year old, so she happily helped the boy find his bus and sent him off on his way. She was only halfway to her car when she realized she forgot her keys in the classroom.
Rushing back into the building before it was locked up, she turned through the maze of hallways until she reached the fifth grade hall, and looked at her classroom. She swore she had turned out the light, and a perplexed expression formed on her face when she saw that the light was not actually turned off. Opening the door nonetheless to both grab her keys and turn off the light, she was greeted by sniffling.
Turning to the sound she noticed that there was someone in here. Someone who she immediately recognized to be Midori Ipson, a bright young girl in her class who often had many things to say. She never seemed like the type to isolate herself and cry, but people were never really what they seemed on the outside, even children.
"Midori?" she called out softly. "Is everything okay? You're going to miss your bus..."

Oh, those kids would pay. Those arrogant, stupid kids who called her names and didn't even care for how she felt. They left her practically reduced to tears, and while Mi told herself not to pay attention to them, that she didn't need to take it, it still left her crying. Mad at everyone, her attitude had been sullen all afternoon.
Mi needed to be alone. That much she knew. Think it out, relax, and compose herself. The classroom seemed like an ideal place. As soon as everyone left, there would be no one there until the janitors came through much later. By then she'd be out. Missing her bus didn't matter. It wasn't that far a walk. Of course, Mi didn't expect anyone to come in before the janitors.
When hearing her teacher ask if she was okay and that she'd miss her bus, without a second thought, the little girl spat "Go away. I can walk. Leave me alone." The last thing she wanted was Lucie to actually comfort her. Mi thought should figure out her problems on her own. If other people knew of her problems, it would just cause issues later.

Her frown deepened when Midori snapped at her. Something must have happened and it wasn't very surprising that she didn't want to talk about it. For a little girl who seemed to be so headstrong, she certainly didn't share much about herself.
Lucie still couldn't help but worry. It was instinct for her and Midori was one of her students, of course. If she wasn't concerned for her students' welfare, what kind of teacher would she be? Still, she didn't want to anger Midori any more than she already seemed to be upset. It was a bit of a confusing situation to be in.
"I can't let you stay in the classroom after school is over," she sighed. "And I'm here to help you, Midori, I'm your teacher. At least let me walk you out..."
She didn't know if it would work at all but she had to at least try.

Right after Lucie spoke again, Midori went back to the reason she was crying in the first place. During recess, a bunch of the self-proclaimed "popular" kids had said the fact she was reading a book was stupid and threw it in the dirt, proceeding to call her a little smartass. Naturally, she'd run away, telling herself she wasn't one, though Mi knew it was probably true.
Snapping back to reality, the girl started choking back her tears. She knew Lucie was probably just trying to be a good teacher and do her job, but Mi didn't want to be helped. If I can't get through this myself, I'm useless, she thought, and couldn't hold back her tears anymore.
Her gaze turned to Lucie, and with tears dripping down her face, she said "If I want to go to the buses, I can. And I can always come up with excuses if need be."

Midori was well beyond her years for a fifth grader, but seeing her like this was breaking Lucie's heart. A little girl shouldn't have to go through all of this, she thought. But Midori seemed reluctant to let her help...of course, the pinkette couldn't force her to do anything. But she really just wished that the girl would let her in, let her help.
Still, she would respect her wishes, even if she wished with all of her soul that she could do something more.
"Alright, but we do need to leave the school," she pushed gently, knowing that if they stayed much longer there was a risk of getting in trouble. "Can we walk outside? Maybe a breath of fresh air will help you out."
She didn't want to push Midori too much, but some gentle prodding wouldn't hurt much, she hoped. Really, she just wanted to make sure the girl was safe, for one thing. She also wanted to make sure that the girl was happy, but that would be difficult given the circumstance that Midori just didn't want any help.

Going outside would mean the few lingering kids would see her and laugh. Although she knew Lucie ment well, Midori didn't want the other kids to see her like this. It would make her the subject of more attacks.
Grudgingly, after realizing that staying inside probably would get her in trouble, the little girl's head nodded slowly, the tears sloshing down her face. They tasted foreign in her mouth, crying being something that she hadn't really done since injuring herself as a little kid. Mi got up slowly, her hair (which was rather messy) fall over her face, obscuring her vision, which caused her to stumble on the carpet. She was a bit of a wreck.
Composing what was left of her dignity, she pushed her hair out of her face, and straightened up a bit. "A-alright then, let's head outside. It's a nice day, I guess," Mi said. She neglected to mention that her book was still where the kids had thrown it during recess and needed to collect it.

While Midori was straightening herself up, Lucie busied herself by making sure that the classroom was all in order and that she actually had her keys this time. It wouldn't do for her to forget them again and then have to come back again. They were safely in her pocket now, so she wouldn't leave them behind.
She also grabbed the box of Kleenex that were on her desk and pulled about five or six tissues out. Turning back to Midori she handed the girl the tissues, frowning a little as she noticed her stumble. After making sure everything was in order, she waited by the door for Midori.
"Do you have all of your things?" she asked her softly. "Do you have that book you were reading in class earlier? I wouldn't want you to forget that, it looked like you were really enjoying it."
She smiled a bit, not knowing of the real fate of the book she had just mentioned.

Her things. Right. Mi had completely forgotten about them when she came back in. She was pretty sure that her backpack fell off in the hall. No matter. The girl could grab them on her way out.
The book, however, was another matter. If she told Lucie where it was, it would mean that she'd have to go in-depth about what happened. Name names, get kids in trouble. Then they'd get in trouble and call Midori more names for tattling. "I left it on the playground during recess," she said, figuring that there'd be suspicion from Lucie but it wouldn't go farther then that.
Quickly accepting the tissues, Mi took one and cleaned up her face, stowing the rest in a pocket. She'd probably need them later. Remembering her stuff, she added "My backpack fell off in the hall." There was no emotion when she spoke.

While it seemed strange that Midori had just forgotten her book on the playground, she wasn't going to push it much farther. The little girl's voice was set solid and Lucie could tell that she didn't want to talk about it. Frowning a little, she went to open the door and wait in the hall, shutting off the light and locking the classroom door when Midori left the room.
When they exited into the hall, Lucie notice the backpack that was laying off to the side of the hallway. She hadn't noticed it before, but she concluded it must be Midori's since she'd mentioned that it fell off in the hall. Crossing the hall to pick it up, she dusted off the front and back before handing it back to the little girl.
"Should we go get your book from the playground?" she suggested with a smile as she took a few steps towards the door exiting out to the parking lot.

She didn't notice that Lucie had picked up her backpack for her until it was right in front of her. Midori accepted it with a nod and a "Thanks." Swinging it onto her back slowly, she continued towards the door with her teacher.
Did she even care about her book at this point? It wouldn't surprise her if it was dirty and the pages were ripped. Kids were like that. All Mi did was push open the door and shuffle towards the playground, her feet dragging on the concrete.
"My book should be somewhere over in the dirt by the bench," she said unhappily. Her backpack fell off again. It wasn't very secure, only hanging by one strap off her left shoulder.

Midori made her way out to the playground to find her book, but her backpack slipped off of her back again. Sighing, Lucie knelt down and picked it up, looking at the straps. They were awfully loose. While Midori was picking up her book, Lucie tightened up the straps before walking over.
"Is your book alright?" she asked, looking down at the novel in the little girl's hands. She smiled, recognizing the title. It was a book she herself had read, and she was a little surprised that someone Midori's age was reading it already, but Midori was a very intelligent girl.
"I like that book," she said quietly, with a smile. "It was one of my favorites when I was younger, just like you."

There was a clear footprint mark on her book. You could see the dirt spread in the pattern of the sole of a sneaker. It had been squished flat by the step someone took onto it, and the inside spine was visibly torn and the pages folded.
"Oh, it's alright. You can barely make out the pages and the pages would probably fall out as you turn it. Lovely condition. Best of all, it's a library book." Midori was very explicit with her sarcasm. Maybe she'd get some kids in trouble.
The book itself was a classic. She didn't even randomly pick her books from the library or bookstore. "Mmm. I pulled it off the senior's reading list. It's wonderful, except now I can't read it anymore."

Lucie sighed a little at the sarcasm, but she assumed that meant that Midori was upset about her book getting dirty. It was a stretch, but she really wanted to cheer Midori up, and she had only one thing in mind that might do that. She smiled a little as the girl explained why she picked it. It was true that this girl was years beyond her age in intelligence.
"Well, I have an idea," she said, handing the backpack back to her. "I can take that book back to the library, and I'll take care of the damage, and I'll let you have my copy of the book. Does that sound okay?"
She was more than willing to let the girl keep her book. She knew that Midori would take good care of it and it would be nothing to pick up another copy. Most of all, however, she just wanted the little girl to not look so sad.

Hew jaw dropped. No one ever did anything this nice for her, except her parents. She'd never gotten in trouble at the library. If anything, she returned them in better condition.
"T-thanks," Midori said, amazed. She accepted her backpack and swung it onto her back with renewed energy. The little girl tightened the straps so it wouldn't fall off again.
Temptation to tell Lucie who did this to the book and her lingered at the edge of mind. Sure, it'd feel great, but they'd hate her more. Instead, she got creative. "I've got a riddle that would give you a nice answer: x 4, y 3, x 3, y 3, x 2, y 3." Midori had given her the desk coordinates of the three kids.

In all honesty, Lucie was a bit puzzled by the riddle, but she wasn't going to say anything about that. Instead she just nodded and smiled in return. "Well, I'll certainly give it some thought."
She had no idea that Midori was clever enough to tell her who the kids were that bullied her through a riddle, but the girl was certainly very sly and intelligent. The pinkette knew that already. The extent of Midori's intelligence was obviously something she didn't quite understand yet.
Taking the tattered library book she slipped it into her bag and made a mental note to grab her copy from home to bring to school tomorrow. After making sure that at long last everything was taken care of and everyone had what they needed, she escorted Midori off of the school grounds.
"I'll bring you the book tomorrow," she let her know, then looked around. "Are you sure you don't need a ride home? How far away do you live?"
