The sky hadn't looked so angry when the two boys had left school that day. Arlo and Orion spent most afternoons together, even if they had homework. Homework didn't matter much when friendships were to be had, right? Relationships were more important than good marks. Or that's what they tried to tell each other, though both of them knew that if their parents didn't see decent grades on that final report card, they wouldn't be happy.
The pair had spent the afternoon tooling around West Nova, talking and laughing about all the things that interested teenage boys. They got distracted in conversation, in one another, and neither of them realized how quickly the sky had gotten dark and how rapidly the storm clouds had rolled in. Just as Orion looked up, pointed at the sky and made a remark about how bad it looked, the clouds decided to open up, a downpour coming down upon them.
It was completely unexpected; neither of them were dressed for this. In a matter of moments both of them were soaked, and not caring much about his school things, Orion grabbed his messenger bag and held it over his head, though it did almost nothing to shelter him from the rain.
"Dammit!" he cried out, though he couldn't help but laugh. "Just our luck..."

It was no secret that Arlo would rather spend time with Orion in the city than at home or school. He had a science project to finish and an essay that was due the day after tomorrow, the latter of which he hadn't even started. Still, he'd rather be with Orion. He could almost forget all about his homework.
He had been just about as oblivious as Orion was to the bad weather, right up until Orion had commented and suddenly they were both well on their way to being soaked through. Arlo quickly dug through his backpack, fishing through the school supplies that was rapidly getting damp, until he found his umbrella at the very bottom and yanked it out. He opened it, slightly exasperated that it was made for only one person, but glad to at least have some kind of cover. He tried to angle it over both of them, rolling his eyes. "When you've spent a third of your life camping like I have, you always come prepared." Some hair dripped and he pushed it away from his face. "But rain in Nova is pretty rare."

Arlo was more prepared than him, and he extracted an umbrella from his backpack. It was pretty small and not that protective, especially since the wind was picking up. Still, he huddled closer to Arlo to try and stay somewhat dry, even if it wasn't helping that much. They should probably get out of the rain, but they were nowhere near Orion's apartment right now.
"Hey, I know you don't really like being at home, but we're a lot closer to your house than mine..."
It wasn't his first choice, and he knew it wasn't Arlo's, but if they stayed out in the rain too much longer they would be soaked and would probably get sick. And as much as he was initially nonchalant about using his schoolbag as an umbrella, it probably wouldn't do well to get all his papers sopping wet.
"Isn't your dad gonna be at work for a while, anyways? We could hang there until the storm blows over," he suggested, wiping some water from his face. "Because I don't know about you, but I'm soaked to the bone already."

Arlo’s face shifted to something neutral, but still somewhat disturbed. He hated his house. It was unwelcoming, even to him. Too neat, clean. Combined with a monochromatic scheme and it reminded him much more of a hospital than a home.
Thus, at Orion’s suggestion, his back straightened and he held back a sigh. As much as he wished that he wasn’t, Orion was right; Arlo’s house was much closer, and so was a dry change of clothes.
”Sure, yeah. He’ll be gone late today, I think.” Which he only knew about due to a sticky note on the fridge before he’d left for school that morning. His dad hadn’t even bothered to give him an excuse this time.
He nodded his head and started taking the route to his house. ”C’mon, we’re gonna get sick if we stay out here any longer.”

Orion knew suggesting that they go to his house wouldn't be the best move, but he had to do it. If he didn't, they would have gotten sick with a cold or even pneumonia, and that would've been much less fun than just going to Arlo's house.
They turned down Arlo's street, making the trek to his house. It didn't normally take this long, but they had rain puddles to walk around as Orion didn't want to get his shoes wet. Arlo didn't seem to care as much, but because of Orion's pickiness, it took them ten extra minutes just to get there. By that point they were both more than soaked.
"Relief, finally," Orion sighed as they walked through the front door, not sure what to do since he didn't want to traipse dirty water throughout the entire house. There wasn't really a way to do that, though, without stripping down at the door and walking through the house without clothes on, and that wasn't something he was about to do.
"Is it okay if the floor gets a little wet?" he asked as he slid off his shoes, making a face at how wet his socks were. Wet socks was one of his biggest pet peeves, but on a day like today it was impossible to avoid.

During the trek to his home, Arlo didn’t say much. He was too wet and too cold to be in the mood for much conversation, and his mind was briefly one-track as he dreamt of dry clothes and a warm house. His mood made him just slightly annoyed at Orion, but he didn’t voice it. He’d tease him about it later, anyways.
”No kidding.” Arlo agreed, slipping off his shoes as he shut the front door behind them. He shook off his umbrella in the front before setting it against the wall.
He shrugged at Orion and peeled off his jacket and shirt as he walked further into the house, both of which were soaked through. Even his pants were, made heavier by the water. ”Fine with me. I’ll clean it up later.” He gestured to Orion to follow as he made his way to the small laundry room, through the perfect halls and past the perfect living room, and threw his clothes unceremoniously into the washing machine. ”You can borrow some of my clothes till yours are done in the wash.” Though Arlo was sure that he an article of clothing or two in his closet that belonged to Orion, and never really had the chance to give back.
Next stop was his room, which was the only place in the house that wasn’t neat and orderly. It wasn’t quite a tornado, but somehow it resembled a disorganized puzzle. He quickly pulled out some spare clothes for the both of them and nodded his head towards the east part of the house. ”You can change in my Dad’s room if you want.”

Orion followed Arlo around like a little puppy while he led him through the house, not wanting to make things any more wet than they already were becoming. While Orion didn't know Arlo's dad that well, he didn't want to make the guy hate him by leaving dirt all over his house. That wasn't what he was aiming for at all. It seemed Arlo didn't care that much, however.
He just nodded dutifully when Arlo first suggested that he borrow some of his clothes, and then that he could change in his dad's room. The rain and trudging through puddles had made him feel a little fatigued, and he was ready to change into comfortable clothes and veg out on the couch until the rain hopefully subsided.
Taking the clothes he went in the direction Arlo nodded. It wasn't difficult to find the room and he stepped in quietly, even though no one was there. The room was dark and he didn't want to feel too intrusive, so he simply kept the light off and left the door a bit ajar so the hall light could flood in, at least enough for him to be able to change.
It took a little longer than normal since he literally had to peel his clothes off of his body, but when he finished up he scooped up his wet clothes and went to Arlo's room, presuming they would head to the laundry to get their clothes washed and dried.

Arlo quickly changed into dry clothes, held them away from his person so as not to get any part of him wet again. When Orion was done changing he nodded his head to the laundry room and, once there, dumped his clothes unceremoniously into the washer. He moved aside to let Orion put his in and crossed his arms, leaning against the dryer. He wasn't quite sure what to do. "So, we have the whole afternoon and my Dad is gone. What do you wanna do?"
As if in response, his stomach grumbled audibly. "Wait, hold that thought, I need food. Want anything?" Their fridge was stocked with every healthy and organic thing under the sun, but by now Arlo was more than capable of making something edible out of the nasty foods his father tried to force on him. He headed to the doorway, looking back to wait for Orion.

He couldn't help but notice that Arlo looked pretty tired as well. The two of them made their way to the laundry and Arlo threw his clothes in the washer, Orion following suit just a moment later. Once the load of clothes began to wash, the boys left the room.
Just as Arlo asked what Orion wanted to do for the afternoon, he could hear the other's stomach growl. A little smirk pulled on his lips, and when the brunette asked if he was hungry, he nodded. "I could go for something right now. Maybe some food would help wake me up."
They walked through the kitchen door as Orion pulled his arms above his head to stretch, his mouth opening in a deep yawn. If he was at home right now he'd probably curl up in bed and take a nap, but he didn't want to sleep right now. Spending time with Arlo was probably at the top of his "things I really like to do" list, so he didn't want to sleep this time away.
"What're we going to eat?" he asked, a little doubtfully as he looked at the extensive array of healthy yet unsatisfying food. "Don't you have anything with a little fat in it in this house...?"
Honestly, Orion knew the answer to that question, but it was always so painful to look in Arlo's pantry and see nothing that even remotely looked appetizing.

It really didn't matter how long Arlo had had to associate himself with the food his dad bought; every time he opened a cupboard or the fridge he would scowl, as he was once he got to the kitchen and opened the fridge door. He promptly shut it after a few seconds and chewed his lower lip while trying to decide how angry his dad would be at him later due to what he was about to suggest.
"We can order a pizza." He mused. If they couldn't finish it, he could give Orion the leftovers to take home. His dad wouldn't be home by then, anyways. Getting rid of the box would be tough, because his dad would suspect if the garbage was out early, and taken out by Arlo willingly, no less. "That has plenty of fat." Or, more fat than anything in this house, anyway. He looked to Orion for guidance, regardless of the fact that it was his house. Still, he valued Orion's opinion. Sometimes he seemed to closest thing to a conscience when he wasn't enough in his right mind to have one.

"Pizza sounds awesome right now," Orion replied, smirking a little. He knew that Arlo's dad would blow a gasket if he was here, knowing that a greasy pizza box was going to be sitting on his pristine, sanitized counters, and a more rebellious side of Orion enjoyed that, unaware of the slight struggle and coordination that Arlo had to plan in his head.
Normally, Orion might think a little more about this. Maybe he didn't want to make Arlo's dad angry — it would all end up being Arlo's problem anyway, with his dad getting mad and punishing him. He obviously didn't want that. But he was hungry and pizza sounded good. There were ways to hide the evidence. They had a can of Febreze and some Clorox wipes somewhere, right?
For someone viewed as Arlo's conscience, he certainly wasn't doing the best job right now.
Grabbing his phone, he didn't wait a moment longer to dial their favorite pizza delivery place and glanced up at Arlo before the other line picked up. "What kind do you want?"

"Anything but anchovies." Arlo reeled off immediately. He was glad that it hadn't taken much to convince Orion, though it only reminded him that someday he would have to convince Orion to get smashed, too.
In fact, he knew that he had a stash hidden in his room somewhere, but immediately thought better of it. They would definitely get caught that way, and then neither of them would probably be seeing pizza, booze, or each other for a while. The latter was something Arlo didn't really want to think about as a possibility at all.
He'd wait until Orion was done ordering the pizza before saying, "If my Dad wasn't so strict we would be doing stuff like this more often."

Before Orion could respond to Arlo, the other line picked up. Ordering a supreme pizza and some soda, he thanked the person on the other line and hung up. Slipping his phone back into his pocket, now all there was to do was wait for the pizza to arrive.
"Yeah," he mused in response. "I mean, we can hang out at my house and do this but I think my mom would get sick of all the pizza boxes in our garbage can." It was a small garbage can, after all, and pizza boxes were extremely cumbersome and awkward.
"But hey, I guess that makes this something special," he smiled, trying to look on the bright side of things. That was Arlo and Orion's relationship in the smallest of nutshells — and almond, maybe. Arlo said something pessimistic, and Orion tried to give it a positive spin. It hardly ever worked but it was always worth a try. "If we did this all the time, then it might get boring."
As if pizza and his best friend could ever be boring.

Arlo snorted. ”Yeah, can’t imagine what my Dad would do if he found several of those lying around.” He could picture it very clearly. So clearly, that he almost expected his father to walk in right then and catch them in the act. He glanced to the doorway and back at Orion.
Under other circumstances and with other people, Arlo would have contradicted the positivity with more pessimism. But this was Orion, and they were at his house. He could stand Orion’s optimism. Not because he’d been around him so long, but because he could make the only kind of uplifting remarks that he wanted to hear.
”Well, yeah, but we’d find other stuff to do. It’s not like we’re adults.” Legally, anyway. When it came to alcohol Arlo didn’t really care whether he was legal or not.

Orion smirked at the last statement. Maybe Arlo did have a shred of optimism in him. But things were different when they were alone, after all. They were allowed to be themselves just a little bit more, and it was comfortable. Orion liked it, he wouldn't trade it for anything.
"I don't even know what you mean by that," he smirked at his friend, checking his phone both for the time and to make sure his mom hadn't left him any messages. He'd have hell to pay if she wanted him to go home earlier and he'd ignored her. Thankfully there was nothing on his phone.
The two joked and talked for a little while longer before the doorbell rang and the pizza arrived. Before Arlo could do anything he went to the door and paid for the pizza before bringing it back, setting the greasy box on top of some paper towels. They wouldn't do much but it was better than nothing.
"Bon appetit," he smirked, pulling one of the slices from the box, watching hungrily as the long threads of cheese stretched from the slice to the rest of the pizza, snapping and dangling there once they reached their breaking point. "Pizza is so damn good."
