| | | We're all very lovely 'til we get to know each other As we stop becoming friends and we start becoming lovers | Downtown Nova Athenis was so busy today, it was exciting! Busy streets meant a busy time in the bakery, and while that meant time flew by quickly, it also made Aura very hungry. All the moving around used up a lot of energy, after all! She needed time to refuel.
Once there was a break in the flow of customers she signaled to her coworker that she was going to take a lunch break and practically skipped to the back room to grab her purse. Slinging the bag over her shoulder she left out the back door and circled around to the front, planning on going to one of the many restaurants that littered Main Street for lunch.
The girl was headed to her favorite sushi place when she noticed something fall out of someone's bag who was a few paces ahead of her. Hurrying up she scooped up the item — it looked to be some kind of wallet or pouch or something — and sped up to catch the person that had dropped it.
"Um...hey, excuse me!" she said, trying to get the woman's attention as she approached, even though her voice was shaking a bit. Talking to someone like this so abruptly was a little scary, but she didn't want this lady to lose her item. "I don't mean to bother you but you dropped this, and it looks important..."

A shopping bag swung from her hand as Mathilde crossed the street. She was wandering, but she didn't look it. She looked like she had somewhere to be, bag swinging, oversized sunglasses like blinders and steps determined. She looked like somebody not interested in conversation, so she didn't think the woman calling out was calling out to her.
She glanced over her shoulder, recognized the wallet in her hand, and paused mid stride, turning to face the girl. She had hair like cotton candy and a sweet disposition, every bit Mathilde's opposite. She smiled at the girl, though her smiles always seemed catlike and shrewd, set in such sharp features."That would be mine, thanks."

The woman turned around when Aura approached and accepted the wallet with an open hand. Now that she was face to face with this woman she couldn't help but feel a little...intimidated. The air this black-haired woman gave off was a little scary but not necessarily in a bad way. Plus, the purplette couldn't deny that her sharp features had a sort of beauty about them. Aura found beauty in most people, after all.
"You're welcome," she said shyly. Now, this would be the part where most people would part ways, maybe offering a few pleasantries as they walked by each other. In a rarer circumstance, one person might try to engage in conversation and in an even rarer circumstance, the other might reciprocate. That person was never Aura, though. She usually just skittered off without a word but...
Something stopped her from doing that today. And although it went against all the laws of nature, the girl spoke up, her voice breaking slightly as she attempted to strike up a conversation.
"So, um...what's your name? I haven't seen you around." Not that Aura got out much, but she did see a lot of people at work. Something about this mysterious, dark woman drew her in, and she was tempted to actually speak and try to find out more.

Mathilde took the wallet back, glancing down as she flipped through it - all her cards and cash were still in there, and she gave a nod of confirmation as she shut it and tucked it into her purse.
She hadn't really expected the girl to stick around, and she glanced up with mild surprise when she spoke up. She sounded nervous, though it was bold enough that she'd asked her name. "Mathilde." She replied, finding herself a little bit interested. "And yours?"
She shrugged when the girl said she hadn't seen her around. Mathilde didn't spend much time out, at least not around the ordinary, living people. "I'm more a night person." She added - this girl didn't look like she knew very much about the night life.

Mathilde. A classy, sophisticated name like that seemed to fit the woman very well, but just that thought made a blush come to Aura's cheeks. It was like she was infatuated like a young schoolgirl, and this was someone she'd just met. But the purplette had never been very good at keeping her emotions buried down.
"I'm Aura," she responded when prompted, a smile spreading across her lips. "It's nice to meet you, Mathilde..."
Where did that come from? When did she become so forward? This was unlike Aura, but she couldn't stop talking. It was like this woman was dragging the conversation out of her but she wasn't necessarily upset about that.
Somehow she could tell that Mathilde was a creature of the night. Rather, they seemed to be polar opposites. Still, she seemed so intriguing and Aura was more than happy that she decided to stick around to talk for a few moments. Most people would have probably found some way to escape the small talk.
"I see," she responded, finding the small talk coming to a stand-still, however. "I don't go out much at night, especially not recently..."

She nodded. Aura sounded airy and sweet and fitting for the girl, and Mathilde still wasn't sure what had made her decide to ask for her name in the first place. Plenty of people found Mathilde intriguing, but they were usually men who wanted to get into her pants.
When Aura went on to admit - predictably - that she didn't go out much at night, Mathilde gave an amused little laugh, though the bit at the end was enough that she figured she might as well ask. "Why, what happened 'recently'?" Bad experience?

"Oh, well..." It had kind of slipped out. Aura didn't mean to talk about personal experiences with someone who was still such a stranger, but something compelled her to speak. The little awkward embarrassment she felt brought a flush to her cheeks and she looked down and away, wringing her hands a little, clutching at them.
"One of my friends took me to a bar once but I didn't really like it," she said. "Um, the drinks didn't taste that good and there were so many...men, just, leering at me." A little sigh escaped her lips. While Aura didn't find herself that desirable, by any means, the men at bars were more than desperate.
"Nothing happened. It's just not my cup of tea..."

Aura looked uncomfortable with the question, but she had been the one to prompt it in the first place - unlike Mathilde, who chose her words very carefully. "I find they have a certain charm." She said, giving the girl an amused smile. Mathilde was a regular at most of those bars - she was used to the cheap drinks and men undressing her with their eyes. But unlike most people, she didn't go out to get smashed or laid. Mathilde just watched things unfold like a movie around her, an impartial if not slightly snarky observer.
"But I suppose it's not for everybody." This girl looked far too sweet and innocent for that kind of thing. "Though, some places are better than others."

Aura smiled a little at Mathilde, feeling a little relaxed that she didn't berate her or anything. Her friends had told her she was just paranoid, after that one time out, and just tried to make her feel bad. Suffice to say, Aura fell out of contact with those people. Unfortunately, that left her without many other people in her life right now.
Maybe that's why she was wanting to talk to Mathilde now. It was strange for the girl to willingly approach someone on the street for a conversation, but all she wanted was a friend. This woman probably wasn't the first choice she'd have based on appearances, and Aura understood it was probably the same vice-versa. But people were more than their appearances.
"I suppose, I guess I shouldn't write them all off..." she said, awkwardly wringing her hands a little. The conversation felt like it had run its course but she didn't want to go, not just yet. She couldn't think of anything else, though, so she looked up at the dark-haired woman and gave her a sweet smile.
"Anyways, um...it was nice to meet you, Mathilde," she said, even though she didn't want to go quite yet. She didn't want the conversation to get too awkward and strained, though. It was a bit of a bittersweet goodbye. "I don't want to keep you too long..."

Mathilde wouldn't even consider herself much of a party girl - a regular, but an uninvolved and sober one. It was just an entertaining place to be, but Mathilde had always had an unconventional idea of what was interesting.
Still, the girl had come up to her, had continued a conversation with no reason to, and that had to mean some sort of interest. Mathilde liked her, she was sweet and different and intriguing, a nervous little thing. "Of course, you probably have places to be." She nodded, noticing the way the girl seemed to linger in her goodbye.
She stepped closer, reaching into her purse for a pen and grabbing Aura by the hand to scribble her number onto her wrist. "But if you're ever looking to give it another chance, give me a call." Mathilde smiled, stepping back and tucking the pen away.

Aura was lingering and she knew it. She just didn't want to have go to back. This was a big step for her, being able to talk to someone like this just out of the blue. And it had turned out pretty nicely, or so she thought. Then again, she couldn't read Mathilde's thoughts. Maybe she was happy that this stupid girl was done talking to her.
But all of Aura's doubts were rendered useless when Mathilde grabbed her hand, turning it over so she could scribble something on her wrist. The purplette was nearly frozen in place, and the slight blush that colored her cheeks was something she couldn't hold back.
It was Mathilde's number, and she told Aura to give her call. This sort of thing never happened to her! It happened in movies, it happened to girls who were actually pretty and interesting. Not to people like Aura. The butterflies in her stomach were going haywire and she simply pulled her wrist back, looked at the number and smiled, hoping her eyes didn't look too joyful.
"I-I'll do that," she stammered. "It was really nice to meet you again, Mathilde..."
With a few more words of goodbye the two women parted, and Aura had to nearly stop herself from half skipping back to the bakery.
FIN.
