The sense of pride and ownership in her voice was apparent, and it brought a smile to his lips. She'd pulled her hand away now but his remained on the creature's wing and he stroked the feathers softly as the pegasus didn't seem to mind. Or, at least he appeared not to mind - Malachi wouldn't know if the thing was angry until it was kicking him in the chest.
"I'm glad you found him," he finally said. "You really seem to love these animals. I don't think he could've found a better owner."
And he meant it. To be honest, Malachi barely knew Ella, he didn't know about he life or all the things she did. He knew her from a few passing conversations, the editorials he saw when he walked by the news stand, and from their time spent together tonight. Still, it was obvious that all of this was something that she truly cared for.

There's a little bit of embarrassment. She can feel her shoulders go a bit red, the tips of her ears. Her subtle vulnerability is what does it. Something about being called out (even though it's a nice observation, hardly an accusation).
Ella tucks her hair behind her ears and looks down. She's still young, after all. She can have her childish moments of nervousness. "I guess," she says, and a little smile creeps into her voice. Underneath the embarrassment ebbs a gentle pool of pride.

It was strange - so strange - to see a vulnerable, young side of Ella. She was only a teenager still and yet it seemed like she was so much older. She was mature for a girl her age and the makeup and clothes she was always dressed in made her seem like she was cresting her mid-twenties, not barely even scraping the surface of them.
Malachi didn't know why he did it. It was stupid and irrational and broke so many rules, but none of those thoughts ran through his head as he gently pulled his hand from the pegasus's wing and moved it to Ella's cheek - which was just as soft and warm as the feathers he'd just removed it from.
In a swift motion that seemed to last a decade he leaned closer to her until his lips met hers in a chaste kiss that said so much more than what it looked like. He was tied up in the moment, that sliver of vulnerability that made Ella seem so real that he couldn't resist himself.
But seconds passed and he was back to normal, life came crashing back around him and he was kissing his employer's teenage daughter all while he still had a girlfriend of his own. He might've felt differently if she was coming on to him and his relationship was horrible, but neither of those things were true.
Pulling away like he was hit by an electric shock, he looked down at her both confused and unsure of what had happened, other than it was something that shouldn't have. Or, at least that's what his mind told him.

She was quiet to begin with, but with his hand on her cheek it's like something else stilled. She wasn't breathing until he kissed her, softly. Ella had kissed and pulled on lips with her own teeth, wound her hands in hair, inhaled an exhale, but she had never been kissed like this, with a quiet confidence.
There's so many reasons this doesn't make sense. Ella knows that, she knows Malachi is putting things on the line and it should worry her that she doesn't know why.
Now she's wide eyed and he's confused, a kid who touched a stove for the first time. Ella purses her lips, finally taking an inhale. Her hand is shaking a little, a tremor in her fingers as she lifts them gently to his chin, tilting her head to kiss him again.
She knows it's stupid. He'll push her away, he'll leave, but Ella has realized that Malachi is someone she wants to touch, to breathe in. She wants to listen to his voice and be under her skin and it's very likely he'll push her away, so she just wants that one last second, with her shivering fingers against his skin, her lips so light and slightly terrified to his.

She kissed him again and he didn't know what to do. This was wrong. She was too young, he had a girlfriend, she was his boss's daughter...the list could go on if he really tried hard enough, but he didn't want to. He just wanted this to be simple. His actions a moment ago made it anything but.
Still, he savored the moments that their lips were touching, even if his conscious took over again and pushed her away. He couldn't be doing this. This wasn't his style. He wasn't a cheater, a cradle robber, whatever other name one could call him. It wasn't him. And this wasn't going to be him.
He had to leave. It was difficult to pull away but the air was getting hot and he was feeling claustrophobic, like the air around him were walls and they closing in, knowing exactly what he did. Guilt was building in his stomach as he shook his head, turning and leaving the stall before calmly walking out of the barn.
Once he stepped foot onto the grass in the cold night's air, he wanted to run. He wanted to bolt away from everything and forget what happened, return to the monotony that was his life, that was Hazel, that was everything.
Maybe he really was sick of it all but he couldn't be. Not right now and probably not ever.
@ella // this is horrible nad it took forever im so sorry
