He isn't used to this sort of contact, and he smiles softly and sheepishly at the question. He doesn't feel like he needs to lie. "Actually, no." His hands drift up her back.
Her tone is playful and her touch is light. "Should I be scared?" He pulls her closer, bows his head to kiss her.

Truthfully, Umi hasn't kissed anyone in a while, but she can affirm that it's like riding a bike. She can affirm that the wait is usually worth it, and she's happy that he doesn't typically do things like this either. Even if he's lying, she appreciates the play-pretend.
(She doesn't think he is though.)
It's laughable the way he bends down to do it. When she pulls away there's a little bit of a laugh, and Umi tells him "Oh yes. Definitely." She's not being cheeky, she's just trying to add something to the conversation, something to illicit a laugh. The kiss is sweet, but Santiago seems like too serious of a person.

Her lips are soft and warm - his are probably rough, but he kisses with something of a hesitance, straightening with hands still on Umi's hips when they pull apart. He laughs lightly, because she's small and soft and she feels breakable, though there's something tough about her conviction, there's something sweet in the way she's still not afraid. It's all what he isn't used to, and he wants to dive into this unfamiliar territory. He wants a night with these things.
Santiago looks down at Umi, a bit of hair out of place that he tucks behind her ear. He sighs, but it's contented. "Dangerous, huh?"

A comparison has to be made to the lackluster marriage she endured for three years, and the comparison is that all roughly one thousand days of it didn't stand up to a minute that had passed in her apartment over the last half hour or so.
That may be exaggerating it, but the moment's simplicity is something Umi could swim in forever. She was right when she thought she had a good feeling about this one. Now she has her hands against his broad chest, and they seem so tiny and she rests her head between them and she can hear his heartbeat. It has to be as big as both of her hands together, one great and lurching fist.
"Can't you tell?" she tells his body heat. She wants to be very dangerous to him, she wants him to not want to leave because, truthfully, the fear of that sprung up on her all at once. She's timid for a moment, reluctant to lead him to her bedroom because she doesn't want to just tie it all up in a ribbon and be done with it. There's more to this, right?
Well, she's been wrong before.

She's warm, flush against him, and he feels the shape of her hands and the rise and fall of his own chest. Some part of him feels like an awkward teenage boy, though his heart pounds steady and slow. The light is dim and the shadows are warm as the feel of her voice when it seems to nestle in his chest.
He wraps his arms around her. They both know why he's here, but Santiago sees enough of fast and rough at work; now he has nowhere to be, nothing he wants but to stay here. The coffee is brewed, he can smell it, but it seems centuries away. "Is that a threat?"

The reluctance really sets it's claws in when Santiago wraps his arms around her. This is nice, it's sweet, it's unexpected. Truthfully, she has no idea what exactly she was expecting.
She pulls her head back up, reaches her hands to curve around his shoulders and hold herself taller so she can kiss him again. She decides he can decide. Umi will keep trusting him.

He doesn't do dating - his only commitment is his daughter. He doesn't do one night stands either, but he'd followed her up knowing what she'd invited him for was more than coffee.
Santiago feels an odd sort of guilt, though he knows he shouldn't. Guilt that this is not Briella's mother, and he feels adulterous even though he isn't. This guilt always rears its head when he finds himself with another woman as if he owes her anything.
But Umi kisses him again, then. It feels natural and easy to kiss back, and then to lift her right off the ground and level her to his height. She's light in his arms and her hands are steady on his shoulders. He doesn't know where the bedroom is but they find their way there eventually.
--
He wakes up in her bed, in the moment just before sunrise. Santiago can feel the fresh wound sting and Umi's warmth against his. He looks over at her in the dim light of morning, sleeping. Nothing had happened that night, but at the same time, very many things had happened.
Santiago looks over at the clock - his first waking thought is usually Briella, but this morning she has taken a close second to an affectionate thought of Umi, one laced with mourning. He has to go - Briella will worry if he isn't asleep in his bed when she wakes up, she'll notice.
He tries to slip out of bed quietly, not to wake Umi, but grace and stealth are not his strong points - the mattress creaks beneath his weight.

Less than she expected, but more, and at some point Umi slowly falls asleep against him - probably mid-sentence.
Now she's awake because the bed moved, and she picks her head up. The sun has not yet filtered through her blinds, and she blinks blearily and Santiago's back. Warmth envelops her like a phantom limb, even though he's up. "Are you... leaving?" her voice is very small, and colored with shame.

He isn't trying to sneak away - he just doesn't want to disturb her. That's what he tells himself when she speaks up and he turns to look at her, towering over her when he stands. He nods.
"Yeah, I have... to be somewhere." He says quietly, smoothing down his shirt. He's still fully dressed, and the sun is beginning to rise, casting its warmth over the cool morning. There was a chill in the room.

She pulls the comforter up to her chin, reluctant to let the cold in. Her brows furrow. "Oh..." it's clear she isn't used to early mornings. Sometimes they sneak up on her, but she isn't comfortable with it.
Umi knows there's something she should say, but she looks up at Santiago helplessly. Part of the confusion is... this wasn't a one night stand. What was it? It sort of makes her more shameful - with sex it would've been expected. But company? Conversation and cuddling? Now it all seems... shadowed.
She licks her lips, still unable to say anything. "Oh." she says again. She wants to ask if he wants her number, where's he going, what happened? Did she say something wrong? It's too early for this.

He avoids her eyes, her disappointment. "Sorry." He says, knowing it won't make much of a difference. He means it, though there isn't anything to apologize for, not really. He does feel bad, but he also worries about Briella.
Eyes flicker to the clock by the bedside. A fresh wave of guilt is settling heavy in his chest, and sighs to try to dissipate it. It's still there. "Thanks for... everything." He doesn't know what to say, how to describe the night in a word, or even in a sentence. He nods, flashes her a smile that doesn't make up for anything before he turns and leaves.
