When she said she hadn't told anybody, he let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding through her entire explanation. A little bit of anger flared up when she prodded at the old wound that was his mother - that she had known, that she had pretended otherwise - and he drowned it in another drink.
"That seems like a lot of work." He said, a note of suspicion in his tone. There was no official trail following him to his penthouse - legally, Noah Parsons was gone and Angel Alessi never had existed - but she seemed to have gone though a lot of trouble. "If you want money, none of this's mine." He said bluntly.

She took it that he was relieved that she hadn't told anybody, cue the sigh when she'd finished her retelling. So, that was one thing that she'd done right. She almost reached towards the shot glass, but thought better of it and pushed it away with her knuckle.
"No shit." She snorted. A lot didn't even begin to cover it. She hadn't done all that searching for nothing. Angel, however, seemed to think she had an ulterior motive—to which she gave him a blank stare, eyebrows raised. "You don't think I did this for money, did you?" She probably could have laughed, but his tone stopped her. "Look, for the record, I don't really give a crap about money. I kinda figured you'd inherited all this from a cousin on your side, but I guess I was wrong." Unless he had a sugar daddy or something, but she wasn't about to say that out loud. "I won't ask any questions, I just wanted to meet you, is all." Now that she'd thought about it, it had been kind of an impulsive decision. Maybe she'd actually caused more trouble than anything.

Angel wasn't completely stupid. He did have a sense of self-awareness, and he knew that he didn't have much worth past what he looked like and what he fucked like. And he didn't think Tara was interested in either of those things. So what did that leave?
He flicked at the empty mug with a finger, hearing it clink dully, and staring down at the coffee ring inside it instead of at her. It was like being back in the principal's office and having to explain himself. He wasn't ashamed or even embarrassed, just angry. It felt like there was just a part of him that was always angry and sometimes everything else receded and the anger throbbed like a festering wound.
"Of course you don't give a crap about money when mom and dad take care of everything for you. Bet they let you borrow the car, get you Christmas presents. Must be nice." His eyes were steely when he did look up at her.

His tone was accusing, let alone his choice of words. Since he’d opened the door, Tara had felt like she’d been treading water. Now she was finally getting somewhere, and it was, what, jealousy?
Tara narrowed her eyes at him. She didn’t know a whole lot about him, really. Probably hadn’t grown up the richest kid around the block. His mom had probably been alone raising him, maybe he had never cared about school and skipped all the time. Hell, he’d had a missing persons ad. A part of her couldn’t really blame him for being angry. Another part wanted to tell him to shut up and point to every single expensive thing in this damn place.
"So, what, you used to have the short end of the stick? Why do you care? I bet you can drive a nice car whenever you want and make everyday Christmas." Even if he’d said that nothing here was his, she didn’t doubt it since he, well, lived here. "They aren’t even that great of parents. What kind of couple lets their own kid—" But then she broke off when she realised that she was about to complain to someone who most likely didn’t want to hear it. Angel wouldn’t care if her parents let her smoke her way to lung cancer and stay out ‘till morning, only to turn a blind eye to the beginning mess that was their daughter. She gripped the underside of the counter and waited for him to kick her out. Or something along those lines.

He wondered what she'd expected – he was the one who had been abandoned, he had every right to be bitter. It might not have had anything to do with her, but she was the closest person to lash out at. Did she expect a warm hug and sympathetic conversation? As far as Angel saw, she'd come to brag. To reiterate who the favourite child was. To remind him of his inadequacies.
Strangely, he'd never thought he needed or wanted a father until now.
He was making assumptions every bit as much as she was, but Angel could tell he might as well have hit the nail on the head. She wasn't far off either. But hell, what could she know about him? Maybe he was a success story, the fancy penthouse and romantic boyfriend, but she'd never seen him before. She'd never seen squalor, and she cut herself off before she could go on about her petty problems – did she realize they seemed like blessings compared to what he had to complain about?
Angel didn't even know what he'd let her in for. He leaned in, glowering. "Bet you could have all this too – flash your tits for a couple guys old enough to be your granddad." He wanted her gone, but he wanted her gone in a huff, offended, repulsed, uncomfortable - as she should be "You a virgin? Rich old perverts love virgins."
He snatched the vodka bottle, tipped it into the empty mug, and swallowed it like a shot.

"Is that what you did?" She spit back. There were very few things she knew about him to form into actual insults, but by now she didn't really care. Tara's blood was hot and she wondered why she even came here in the first place. "Fondle some old rich guy's balls a couple times and land yourself a nice place?"
Why was she here? She'd already stated that she just wanted to meet him. Well, she had, and she'd walked into his home on top of it. If she really only wanted to meet him, she wouldn't have come inside. When she came to terms with that, she glared at Angel and pushed herself away from the counter. "Obviously coming here was a mistake. I don't even know why I bothered."
Beyond that, she couldn't think of anything witty to say. She was angry and embarrassed, and she wanted to be as far away from Angel as possible. She abruptly turned on her heel and strode back through the house, away from the stupid posh furniture and her stupid girly half-brother. She yanked the front door open and even considered slamming it shut, but she wasn't ten years old and she wasn't arguing with her parents. Tara didn't dare take a look back on her way out.
