She watched the clouds gather into a thick blanket that hid away the sun, and felt the drops of water tapping against the top of her head.
Seconds later rain poured down, as if the someone was trying to put the entire island under water. Like one big aquarium, maybe, just instead of dolphins and sharks it'd have Mr. Chippers and her. Does that make her a mermaid then? She'd have to learn how to hold her breath, an hour or two. She wouldn't make a very good mermaid if she had to come up for air all the time.
Mr. Chippers already found a place to hide himself from the rain, inside of a hole in the tree trunk, and she moved to a high branch right by it. A small, silly grin tugged on her lips despite a situation any other person would consider unfortunate. Lightning cracked not far off the island, a blindingly white dash out of the layers of dense storm clouds.
"One. Two."
Aurora counted to the sky, legs dangling and eyes peeking through the tiny gap between the leaves., waiting for the rumbling thunder.
Thump.
Jamie was not the bright eyed, inquisitive boy that he might have very well grown into under different circumstances. Jamie was meek and obedient and he didn’t like to ask questions.
But sometimes, he had to.
As soon as the pain dancing up and down his nerve endings was bearable enough for him to sit up and raise his eyes. All he could see were leaves, stirred by a hot and thick wind, the kind before a storm. He lowered himself back down to lay flat on his back, limbs spread and eyes closed as he felt his tailbone throbbing, the pain starting to ebb away, so he could occupy his mind with other things.
Like why he was here.
Fallen out of a tree. Sleeping, probably. How he’d gotten there – his guess was as good as anyone’s. He didn’t notice anyone else around, though, not immediately. He shut his eyes, heard the rain pattering against the ground though he couldn’t feel it beneath the canopy of hissing leaves. It was all very ominous, though not unbearably so. Jamie had just woken up – he was groggy, but lucid.
The clap of thunder still made him jump nearly right out of his skin. He opened his eyes, and this time caught the flash of bright pink and flesh colour up in the tree. He just stared.
“Six.” She looked down, doey eyed from the rainwater that slipped in by accident, “Six....five... five. One-point, one-point-two. One-point-two miles.” That wasn’t too far away, was it?
The sting in her eyes made Aurora blink repeatedly, until she noticed something that wasn’t there before, all the way on the ground beneath her.
He seemed incredibly tiny from where she was. She must have climbed higher than she thought. “Hi! Hello!” The acrobat chirped brightly from the top of the tree, then again in a much louder voice as another wave of roaring rumble. Ponytails slipped down her shoulders, a shade darker from the moisture. “Are you going to be a mermaid, too?”
With an elated grin, neon pink gaze seeked for something equally bright, something that weren’t the beady little eyes that Aurora was used to. Maybe her voice mixed together with the thunder, he wouldn’t be able to hear her that way.
All it would take was a few swings and reels to get back on the ground, but leaving Mr. Chippers alone in a weather like this? Aurora chewed on the inside of her cheek, held back by a little more than the single worry.
The little burst of pink in the treetops, swaying like a plastic bag caught in the wind, Jamie squinted at it. It was a person, a girl, her voice ringing out brightly. He didn't say anything for a moment –he was too surprised to be polite. He had just woken up, it seemed a little too early to be hallucinating, he thought as he rubbed at his eyes.
He stared up at her for a few seconds, slowly propping himself up on his elbows, staring into the trees – a few moments later, he decided that she was probably real, with a small nod. From this angle, he could see right up her skirt – just about, if not for how high up she was – and averted his eyes.
"Mermaid?" He repeated. Maybe she wasn't real. Jamie sat up, glancing up to see if she was still there. She was. "I'm not a mermaid." Was she a mermaid? In a tree? Jamie rubbed at his eyes with a frown.
