Seth liked the night. He liked to listen to the distant humming of cars and watch the starless night sky slowly darken over the trees far below. He liked the view from his nice (albeit cramped, since it was technically meant for one person) apartment, one of the nicest in West Nova Athenis. Honestly, he was more comfortable than he'd ever been back in Alaska with his foster mom and dad. And yet he was still feeling kind of empty. "Ow-" Seth mumbled, tentatively lifting his ice pack to the dark purple bruise on his temple. He didn't get bullied often, but there were a couple of seniors who liked to give him a hard time. "Ugh, fuck, it's worse than before," he muttered to himself, but his words merely echoed in the silence. The bruises hurt, but the pain was nothing compared to the nagging twinge of emptiness he felt. It was getting late. Seth could feel his eyes getting heavy. Just a bit longer, and he'll be home, he told himself, as a form of comfort. But Seth couldn't help but doze off with his head face-down on the dinner table, where a full plate of omelette rice and a pair of chopsticks continued to wait quietly. @devin MARI @ GS!

@seth TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ♛ | Usually, he was home much much later, but today, he was free to go earlier than expected, mostly because the club was closing early tonight, which meant his shift was shorter as well. Truthfully, Devin rarely stayed at his apartment for long. Most of his time was spent outside, either in the club or just simply going out. Even food he got from outside, his refrigerator at home usually with just drinks and snacks, mostly of the sweet kind since his clients seemed to enjoy giving him those. His apartment was usually a mess, but that was because he really just needed to sleep there.
It was, simply put, an empty home. Well, until two years ago.
Keys rattled against each other as Devin turned it and pushed open the door. Huh, strange. The lights were on. Does that mean Seth was still awake? But it was the middle of the night! Keeping his steps light, Devin made his way down the entryway, taking off his suit jacket and placing it on the couch he passed in the living room, the kitchen slash dining room right beside it.
And there he saw him, his head on the dining table with a plate in front of him. Devin felt a pang in his chest, the guilt on keeping him waiting eating at him. At the same time, though, he felt warm - warmth in that Seth had been waiting for him. A small smile was on his face as he moved toward the younger boy, placing a hand gently on his head.
"Seth, I'm home." A gentle voice hard to hear outside the presence of his brother could be heard, as Devin tried to softly wake his younger brother. "Come on, you're gonna get a cold here." He eyed the food prepared for him on the table, before he turned his gaze back to Seth. Did he usually do this? For how long had it been going? Devin rarely (or rather, never) came home early so this was ... a little new to him.

Seth roused from his daze, blinking away tiredness as his eyes adjusted to the artificial light. When they focused, he gazed unfalteringly at Devin's familiar face. How long had he been asleep? "D-Devin?! You're back early," he said stupidly, not shocked but a little dumbfounded. It wasn't, Seth knew, early at all, if we were going by normal people standards, but Devin didn't have a normal job. Seth didn't know what it was, but he trusted Devin, so it didn't matter. Every night, Seth would wait. He would cook two servings of dinner and wait for his brother to come back from work. Usually, it would get really late, and he would proceed to put the extra plate he prepared in the fridge to pass off as "leftovers" and eat for himself the next day. Then, he would go to their shared bedroom and fall asleep. Today, though, was new. Seth forgot about feeling empty and sat up. "Did I fall asleep?" No shit, Sherlock. He didn't wait for Devin to answer. "Oh. I wasn't... waiting for you, I just, uh, ouch-" Seth winced, covering up his bruise and pushing away the ice pack he had left on the table. "I, uh, made extra dinner on accident. You probably ate already, though."@devin MARI @ GS!

@seth TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ♛ | A soft smile greeted Seth as the older brother watched him slowly wake up, blinking a couple times. How cute. His little brother was always so cute, even waiting for him. Devin wasn't an idiot - he knew what was going on here and oh how touched he was. To others, Seth seemed awkward and shy, but to Devin he was his sweet little brother.
Maybe there was a bit of a brother complex going on here.
"Good morning." Well, technically it was, just a little past midnight. He ran the hand already on top of Seth's head through the younger boy's hair before pulling back. He gave a chuckle at how Seth was so desperately trying to cover up what he was doing, running a hand through the younger boy's hair before he stood up straight. "Mhmm, of course you weren't. I definitely believe that, Seth." His tone showed otherwise, but it quickly fell, noticing the wince and how quickly Seth was trying to shove away the ice pack on the table.
Damn, how could he have missed that?
"Are you hurt?" He was worried, that's for sure, his tone conveying such as he leaned his face towards Seth, placing a hand as to where Seth touched. "Let me see it," he said, taking Seth's hand, trying to pull it away from where he was covering it. "How'd this happen?" |

If it were anyone else, Seth would have pushed away the comforting hands. He might have listened to those little red flags (a protective measure) that popped up whenever someone tried to get close to him. But this wasn't just anyone, it was Devin. And because it was Devin, Seth didn't flinch as his brother rustled his messy red hair, and he didn't falter as he took Seth's hand gently, revealing the ugly bruise on his face. "It's true! I wasn't waiting. I wasn't," he protested. Devin knew him well enough to know that wasn't true, but the two didn't actually talk much, so Seth tried anyway. Likewise, Seth was sure as hell going to lie about his injuries. Devin was not obligated to know that ever since that one time a few weeks ago, when he had visited Seth's school for some parent-teacher thing, Seth's after-school bruises had started to become a regular occurrence. It must have seemed pretty odd to have a brother for a parent. "I'm not hurt," he lied lamely. "I just got into a fistfight, that's all."It wasn't even a total lie, because it had been a fistfight. Just a particularly one-sided fistfight. At this point, Seth realized that Devin was still holding onto his hand. His cheeks warmed, but he didn't bother to move it. @devin MARI @ GS!

@seth TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ♛ | Devin pulled away Seth's hand (still unconsciously keeping his hand on it, though), wincing when the bruise was clear under the fluorescent light. He reached up, fingers gentle and soft against the bruise, touching it ever so lightly to make sure he didn't hurt his brother. "This looks really bad. What did you do to get it?" His eyebrows furrowed, about to get an ice pack before he noticed the one on the table. He was about to reach out for it when Seth said something that completely turned his attention all on him.
"A fistfight?" His voice was suspicious and a thinly veiled layer of anger already starting to show, his eyes flashing dangerously. "What do you meant fistfight? You got into a fight?"
He couldn't believe it. There was no way Seth would get into a fight, he was such a nice boy and really just seemed the sort to keep to himself. Not to mention, he was pretty sure Seth couldn't fight. Or, well, that was an assumption on his part, but Seth just didn't seem the type to get into a fight.
"Tell me what happened." The tone of his voice was stricter now, as he pulled up the nearest chair beside Seth and seated himself. He knew, though, whatever it was that Seth will tell him, Devin would be sure to find the person responsible for the bruise on his brother's head. |

The amount of concern his brother showed him was incredible. Seth felt so happy he could burst. It didn't show on his face, but he was happy. Especially because Devin was never home. Sometimes Seth felt like he was a bother in the household. Maybe he was being too attached. But at the very least, he wanted to do whatever he could to make himself useful for Devin. Contributing to the monthly rent was just one way; that's why he got a part-time job. Even then, Devin made more than enough on his own. At Devin's reaction, the color drained from Seth's face, and he looked a little disappointed. His brother was totally onto his lie, and the suspicion in his voice was impossible for Seth to unhear. It was almost uncanny how well his brother knew him, even though he was never at home these days. "Is it really that surprising?" He supposed it was, considering he'd always been the quiet type, even back when they were kids. "Devin, please, nothing happened!" Seth was insistent. "Well, something did happen, but it wasn't important. You don't need to beat up the guys who punched me, it's not a big deal. I'm not twelve anymo- ouch!" He winced yet again, and the pain in his eyes showed otherwise. Devin's protectiveness came as no surprise to Seth, but Seth didn't want Devin to worry. In a way, it was contradictory. He liked it when his brother worried about him, but he didn't want to be a bother, either. "Really though, please don't...""But uh, a band-aid would be nice."@devin MARI @ GS!

@seth TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ♛ | "It is. You don't seem the type at all. I mean, not an insult or anything, I'm just saying."
He really would never expect Seth to get into a fight. Ever. With the way he was, it was surprising that he'd even be close to anyone -- a part of Devin wanted to keep it that way (though he'd never admit it out loud or even to himself). Sometimes he'd rather wrap his little brother in a bubble and have Seth rely only on him, to trust only him, to ever be close to only him. Wasn't that how it went, since way back?
But he wouldn't even tell him what happened with the bruise.
At Seth's dismissive attitude, Devin was a little taken aback, a clear look of surprise momentarily on his face. He won't tell him? He'd keep a secret like that from him? Had Seth always been like this, he didn't know. Devin was used to being relied upon by his brother, so not being told took him aback.
"You're not gonna tell me?" He was confused, his tone saying as much, eyebrows furrowed. Feeling like was probably gonna drive Seth to guilt, Devin shook his head, giving a sigh and running a hand through his hair. "Fine. If you don't want to tell me, I'll shut up about the topic. But you still need to treat that." He didn't like it, not being told by Seth what happened, but his brother clearly said he wasn't twelve anymore. He knew that. Devin knew that very well, but he wanted to take care of his brother.
Standing, he took the ice pack, now warmer than it should be and shoved it back in the freezer. "I don't have an extra pack, sorry. We should buy one next time." He really tried to keep his voice normal and warm, but he felt like it came out a little colder than he wanted it to. Still, he looked on, going through the cabinets before he found the medical kit. That's barely used. He took out the box, pulling out a bandaid before he seated himself back on his chair in front of Seth. Peeling it open, he then gently placed it on the bruise, trying not to give Seth any pain.

The tone in Devin's voice changed. Seth had heard it before, but he wasn't used to it, so it kind of made him want to cry- which, of course, he didn't do, especially after claiming he wasn't twelve anymore. Seth wasn't dumb; he figured his brother had a colder side, but a selfish fear inside of him never wanted to see it. He wanted Devin to be the kind, caring brother forever. He never made it obvious, but his worst fear was being rejected by his brother. It was funny. He was acting like a spoiled child who wanted his brother all for himself. He wasn't sure what he wanted anymore. Part of him wanted to keep being the dependent little boy. But part of him wanted to be worthy, independent, and strong, worthy of someone like his brother. But did that mean he wanted his brother to be something more? Something that wasn't his brother? "I'm sorry, I just..." Seth hesitated, as Devin placed the bandage on his face to hide the injury. "Never mind. Thank you for taking care of me." It sounded oddly formal. He tried again, wanting desperately for Devin to trust him. "I mean, I want to tell you, but I'm not sure if you would be happy knowing the truth."Seth just didn't want this (whatever it was) to change. And if Devin knew that his brother complex was possibly the reason for all this bullying, "this" might go away forever. @devin MARI @ GS!

@seth TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ♛ | He really really really didn't like this situation. Since when did Seth keep secrets from him? As he went through the cupboard, trying to look for the medical kit, Devin could barely try to push down the uneasy feeling in his chest. He was annoyed, really, and just ... confused. Devin wanted his little brother to stay the cute Seth who he wanted to rely on him forever.
Ah, this was too difficult to think about, and the more he did, the more he got annoyed at himself, too. Shouldn't he be the more mature one, here?
"No, it's fine. Don't apologize." He sighed, forcing a small smile on his face. "Please. I'd feel bad." He reached out to pat his brother on the head, careful not to touch the bruise. "It's fine if you don't want to tell me, just know that I'll listen to you if you will, alright?" A gentle and sweet big brother. That's what he should be, and that should be only what he should be.
"Anyway, once the ice pack's cold again, you should use it." He shifted the seat so it would be closer to the table again. "Or you could sleep now. I'm gonna stay up and eat what you cooked for me." Or, well, the "leftovers". He smiled at Seth expectantly, pulling the plate of omelette rice towards him. |
